Bernanke says Fed would act if inflation falls (Reuters)

CLEVELAND (Reuters) ? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said on Wednesday the central bank might need to ease monetary policy further if inflation or inflation expectations fall significantly.

In his first public remarks since the Fed launched a fresh measure aimed at keeping down long-term borrowing costs, Bernanke indicated a willingness to push deeper into the realm of unconventional policy if economic growth remains anemic.

"It is something that we're going to be watching very carefully," Bernanke said in response to questions from the audience at a forum sponsored by the Cleveland Fed.

"If inflation falls too low or inflation expectations fall too low, that would be something we have to respond to because we do not want deflation," Bernanke said.

The comment was made in response to a question about a recent decline in market-based inflation expectations, which policymakers see as a good gauge of future inflation trends.

The gap between yields on 10-year Treasury notes and their inflation-protected counterparts fell to 1.70 percent last week, the lowest since September 2010. It has edged up slightly since then and last stood at 1.86 percent.

In an effort to stanch the deepest recession in generations and help the recovery, the Fed not only slashed benchmark interest rates to effectively zero, but also more than tripled its balance sheet to around $2.9 trillion.

Despite these measures, growth has remained quite soft, averaging less than 1 percent on an annual basis in the first half of the year. Bernanke signaled he remains concerned about risks to the economy, which the Fed described as "significant" in its September policy statement.

"We have a lot of problems both in terms of recovery and in terms of longer-term growth," he said.

A TWIST ON HOUSING

Last week, the Fed said it will sell $400 billion in short-term Treasury securities and invest them into longer-dated ones to try to put downward pressure on borrowing costs over a longer period.

Investors have dubbed the program Operation Twist after a similar measure undertaken by the Fed in the 1960s. The central bank will also renew its help to the housing finance sector by reinvesting maturing mortgage bonds in its portfolio back into that market.

Bernanke called for the U.S. government to beef up its assistance to the ailing housing sector, the epicenter of the 2008 financial meltdown.

"Some strong housing policies to help the housing market recovery would clearly be very useful and would allow the monetary policy actions of the Fed ... to have more effect and to help the economy recovery more strongly," Bernanke said.

Asked about the fate of fallen mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Bernanke reiterated his view that the mortgage market remains too weak to allow the government to try to privatize the government-sponsored entities.

The Fed's latest monetary easing did not have unanimous support within the Federal Open Market Committee, which sets monetary policy.

Three regional central bank presidents dissented against the move. Kansas City Fed President Thomas Hoenig, who does not have a vote on the committee this year but has been a vocal opponent of the Fed's unconventional policies, took a parting shot at the central bank's actions on Wednesday.

"When you encourage consumption by inhibiting your interest rates from rising to their equilibrium level, you will in fact buy problems, and we have, in fact, bought problems," said Hoenig, who is due to retire on October 1, in his last speech in office.

GURPS 4 Infinite Worlds Game

I am fairly new here but haven't been able to find any GURPS games, so I am checking who would be interested in playing in an infinite worlds fantasy division- a team of ICOPS whose job involves exploring, rating, patroling, and managing fantasy worlds. The game setting involves two signifigant NPCs, a Cabal mage who has agreed to work with IP in exchange for unfettered access to the reorts, and a centrum defector who has a fascination with magical worlds, which generally occur in the lower quanta. The team has been established to explore and handle teh worlds he discovers, and is funded by a group which hopes to eventually find a world where magic and technology can successfully coexist for colonization.

Red Sox stay tied in wild-card race

Boston hits four home runs in 8-7 win; preps for regular-season finale Wednesday

Boston's Jacoby Ellsbury points to teammate Marco Scutaro they scored on Ellsbury's home run in the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

BALTIMORE - The Boston Red Sox celebrated a rare September victory for about 20 minutes before turning their attention toward their next game ? the last and most important of the 162-game schedule.

The Red Sox maintained a share of the AL wild-card lead Tuesday night, using four home runs to beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-7 and set up a dramatic conclusion to the regular season.

The skidding Red Sox were 6-19 this month before rebounding to edge the last-place Orioles. The win, combined with Tampa Bay's 5-3 victory over the New York Yankees, kept Boston and the Rays tied with one game left.

After blowing a nine-game lead in the span of 23 days, the Red Sox will send Jon Lester (15-9) to the mound against Baltimore on Wednesday night in an effort to get into the postseason for the fourth time in five years. Lester, Boston's winningest pitcher, will be throwing on three days' rest.

A month ago, the Red Sox would shudder at the prospect of a must-win situation on the final day. But here they are, and they intend to make the best of it.

"I think it's really good for baseball, not so good for my stomach," manager Terry Francona said. "It's exciting. If you don't want to show up (Wednesday) and play, you've got no pulse. My goodness, I can't remember being that nervous in a long time. Go back to the hotel and not sleep, and then show up and see what we can do."

Boston will be looking to put together its first winning streak since sweeping a doubleheader from Oakland on Aug. 27. If the Rays and Red Sox remain tied after Wednesday, Tampa Bay will host a one-game playoff Thursday.

"Everybody's been watching the scoreboard and knowing that we need to win tonight so we can come back (Wednesday) and fight through it again," Boston slugger David Ortiz said. "I hope if I'm still here next year we can make it easier. We're playing like this is a playoff already."

Rookie Ryan Lavarnway became the unlikeliest of heroes for Boston, hitting his first two major league homers after being thrust into the lineup because of injuries to catchers Jarrod Saltalamacchia (sore collarbone) and Jason Varitek (knee).

Lavarnway, a Yale philosophy major who never played a big league game before August, hit a three-run drive in the fourth inning and added a solo shot for an 8-4 lead in the eighth.

"Besides what he did offensively, I thought he ran the game, I thought he had a lot of poise," Francona said. "That was one of the more exciting things to watch. We've seen a lot of interesting things here over the years, but that was right near the top."

Lavarnway said, "It feels good, but the job's not done. We still got to go out (Wednesday) and win another ballgame."

Jacoby Ellsbury and Marco Scutaro also connected for Boston, which scored all its runs on home runs.

Alfredo Aceves (10-2) pitched 3 2-3 innings of three-hit relief for the Red Sox, who survived homers from Baltimore's Matt Wieters and Adam Jones.

After the Orioles scored twice in the eighth off Daniel Bard to make it 8-6, Jonathan Papelbon survived a hectic ninth for his 31st save. Wieters drove in a run with a grounder and Baltimore had the potential tying run at second with two outs before Jones grounded out on a 3-2 pitch.

"Everything we got, we needed," Francona said. "We hung on for dear life."

Said Jones: "We battled down to the final pitch. That's the way I live. You know we ain't going to quit."

Pitching at Camden Yards for the first time since being traded by Baltimore to Seattle in February 2008, Boston starter Erik Bedard gave up three runs and five hits in 3 1-3 innings. The left-hander struck out six but needed 84 pitches to get 10 outs.

Bedard retired the first two batters without difficulty, then walked Nick Markakis and yielded an RBI double to Vladimir Guerrero to fall behind 1-0.

Boston took the lead in the third against rookie Zach Britton (11-11) when Scutaro hit a two-out double and Ellsbury followed with his 32nd homer. Ellsbury has hit in 35 straight games against the Orioles, a streak that began on April 17, 2009.

Lavarnway connected on a 3-2 pitch in the fourth following singles by Ortiz and Adrian Gonzalez. Wieters answered in the bottom half with his 22nd home run, the second in two nights, to make it 5-3.

A triple by Carl Crawford and Scutaro's homer off Jason Berken made it 7-3 in the sixth. Jones led off the bottom half with a homer off Aceves.

NOTES: Boston's Jed Lowrie started in the cleanup spot for the first time in his career. He went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts. ... Saltalamacchia was available if needed. Before the game he said, "I feel good, I feel like I can perform, but if it takes today to be 100 percent tomorrow, then that's what we'll do." ... Francona said RHP Clay Buchholz, who's on the 60-day DL with a back strain, could find his way onto the postseason roster. ... For the second time in two nights, play was interrupted when a fan ran onto the field. ... Boston starters have a 7.28 ERA in September. ... Alfredo Simon will pitch Wednesday for the Orioles.

(AP) ? A Shanghai subway train crashed into another that was stopped underground Tuesday afternoon, injuring more than 210 people in the latest trouble for the rapidly expanded transportation system in China's commercial center.

The crash occurred after Shanghai Shentong Metro Group blogged that line 10 was having delays due to equipment problems. Line 10 opened just last year as one of the city's newest subways.

At least 212 people were hurt, three seriously, the metro operator said. It said none had life-threatening injuries, though some of the injured were carried away on stretchers.

"This is the darkest day ever for the Shanghai subway. Regardless of the cause or responsibility, we are stricken with remorse for having caused our passengers injury and losses," the company said in an apology posted on its blog. "We want to deeply, deeply apologize."

The crash follows a July 23 collision of two bullet trains in southeastern China that killed 40 people and injured 177, bringing into the open festering resentments over the huge costs of the country's massive buildup of its rail system, especially its high-speed trains.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the results of an investigation into the cause of that accident, though state media cited officials saying signaling equipment was thought to have been a key factor.

In Tuesday's crash, one train rammed into the back of another that was stopped between stations. Reports said problems with signaling equipment had prompted the line to switch to manual operations.

The trains were relatively crowded when they crashed in midafternoon. Photos posted online by passengers showed some of the injured covered in blood and lying on the floor of the train.

Firemen helped evacuate the approximately 500 passengers on the trains, taking them out through emergency exits and walking them through the subway tunnel.

The crash snarled downtown traffic as police blocked roads to clear the way for ambulances, and hundreds of gawkers gathered to watch as passengers were escorted from the subway.

Shanghai, a city of 23 million, has rapidly expanded its subways in recent years and some lines have seen problems with faulty signaling, windows shattering, doors not opening properly and poorly trained train operators.

Shanghai's No. 10 line was among several opened last year that were built hastily ahead of the 2010 World Expo, which brought more than 72 million visitors to the eastern city.

8w0.net ? Why Is Online College a Better Option than Conventional ...

Going to college has become an ever-growing industry that on the one hand, promotes the value and importance of a higher education and a successful career, but on the other hand doesn?t promote sufficient means and methods to allow people to actually take advantage of the generous offer. The main reason is the college tuition increasing year after year, making students accrue huge debts by the time they graduate.

Nowadays, more and more universities, trying to meet high-school graduates? needs, provide online college courses to students who don?t have the money or time to go to a regular college. Enrolling in an online college is earning more ground than ever as more and more students realize they have the same benefits after they graduate as they would?ve had, were they to graduate from a regular college or university. Tuitions are inexpensive and affordable, accommodation and living expenses are eliminated from the equation, making this choice a very smart and affordable one.

The costs of going to college online cannot even stand comparison with taking classes in the conventional manner. First of all, tuitions are considerably lower; secondly, you can eliminate accommodation costs, traveling expenses and even buying books or study materials, since you have it all on your computer. You have access to the same quality and efficiency of education, without paying the actual cost of getting higher education the usual way.

Online college courses are not so different from regular classes, except there aren?t any people surrounding you and you?re comfortably sitting in your chair. You can learn at your own pace, get online in your free time and get to know new and interesting people via the Internet. You will receive all study materials in the form of text, audio and video materials via email.

Some people are concerned that getting a higher education through other means than the traditional ones will diminish a student?s chances of getting better-paid jobs and social recognition. That is really not the case, since most online colleges are accredited and courses are taught by reputable professors and teachers. The only difference is the cost-effectiveness and comfort provided by the modern means of communication that allows students from all over the world to attend reputable colleges without making large investments.

Therefore, if you are thinking of going to college but your financial situation doesn?t allow you to do it in a conventional manner, take advantage of the technological progress and modern means of communication by enrolling in an online college.
