BEIJING ? Chinese lawmakers are touting the country's legal system as the best way to protect the rights of citizens while refusing to discuss detainments and intimidation of political critics.
A pair of deputy directors of the national legislature's legal affairs committee said China's legal system reflected changes in society. But they refused to address concerns over the illegal harassment and detention of government critics.
They were asked repeatedly at a briefing Thursday about the death last week of a toddler who was struck by two vehicles and left for dead by passers-by. They declined to discuss it in detail.
