Natives to oppose West Coast oil pipelines

(Reuters) ? Aboriginal groups in the Canadian Pacific province of British Columbia said on Thursday they had formed a united front to oppose all exports of crude oil from the Alberta tar sands through their territories. The declaration is another political blow to the Canadian energy sector and Canada's right-of-center Conservative government after Washington decided last month to delay approving a pipeline carrying oil sands crude to the Gulf Coast.

RBC PMI shows slower manufacturing growth

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian manufacturing growth slowed in November to the weakest level in four months as worsening global economic conditions took a toll on the domestic environment, data on Thursday showed. The RBC Canadian Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index came in at 53.31 in November, above the level of 50 that separates expansion from contraction.

Supreme Court to hear corn syrup price-fixing

(Reuters) - Canada's Supreme Court said on Thursday it will hear a case that alleges producers of high-fructose corn syrup, including U.S. agribusiness giants Cargill Inc and Archer Daniels Midland Co, conspired to fix the sweetener's price. The case involves efforts to set up a class action lawsuit. It was brought by Sun-Rype Products Ltd, a Canadian juice and fruit-snack company based in British Columbia, and by a consumer representing potential individual claimants.

Chrysler Canada November auto sales up, Ford slips

TORONTO (Reuters) - Auto sales at the Canadian arms of Chrysler Group LLC and Toyota rose in November on strong car sales, while Ford Motor Co's sales slipped again, despite higher truck volumes. Ford Canada's combined car and truck sales skidded 1.5 percent last month to 18,103 units on a 14 percent tumble in car sales. The Focus remained the company's most popular car, while the F-Series truck topped overall vehicle sales.

RIM, Nokia deny use of Carrier IQ software

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion does not install, nor authorize, its carrier partners to install "Carrier IQ" monitoring software on its BlackBerry smartphones, the company said on Thursday. RIM made the statement after a security researcher said the "Carrier IQ" application, which can monitor what device users are doing, has been installed on mobile devices from multiple vendors without the knowledge or consent of customers.

Maple says TMX deal benefits all, working with Ottawa

TORONTO (Reuters) - The consortium seeking to buy the owner of the Toronto Stock Exchange sought to assure regulators on Thursday it would not become an unfair monopoly, even as the federal competition watchdog signaled it had "serious concerns" about the C$3.8 billion deal. Appearing before regulators at Canada's most powerful securities watchdog, representatives of Maple Group stressed the proposal to buy TMX Group would benefit all market players. Maple is comprised of 13 of Canada's most powerful financial institutions.

Flaherty tells Europe to fight crisis with own money

NEW YORK (Reuters) - European leaders should not expect outside help until euro zone countries have put up more of their own resources to try to stem their financial crisis, Canada's finance minister said on Wednesday. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said it was not the right time for euro zone countries to turn to the International Monetary Fund for help.

Harper welcomes Q3 GDP, concerned about Europe

(Reuters) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Wednesday welcomed strong third-quarter economic growth figures but expressed concern about the European debt crisis. The Canadian economy grew by a faster-than-expected 3.5 percent, annualized, in the third quarter, according to Statistics Canada data released earlier on Wednesday.

Canada natives sue Shell over oil sands funding

TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian native group is suing Royal Dutch Shell Plc for what it said was a failure by the oil major to live up to environmental funding agreements tied to Shell's massive northern Alberta oil sands developments. The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation seeks C$1.5 million ($1.47 million) from Shell for allegedly blocking requests for money to be used for sustainable development and education initiatives in the community under agreements made in 2003 and 2006.

TSX falls as weak global data hits banks, miners

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian stocks fell on Thursday following three days of gains, as banks and resource issues turned lower on weak global manufacturing data and fears that Europe's debt problems would persist. Despite better-than-expected earnings from two of Canada's largest banks, financial stocks fell more than 1 percent after soft Asian and European manufacturing data renewed fears of a global economic slowdown.
