John, 36, was attacked by the scumbag on Twitter who said the former West Ham ace should play football on a minefield.
The striker battled testicular cancer in 2009 but it spread to his brain and saw him fight for life in hospital.
John beat the disease and now campaigns for more awareness of the killer condition.
But the sick troll said in a tweet that a stadium would have a better atmosphere if Hartson dropped dead. He also called him a "bald ginger p****".
Dad-of-four John slammed the person responsible and said they would have been arrested if they had said the words in public.
He said: "I can take banter, but when somebody says that they wish you were dead or worse, it takes it to a whole new level.
"There are people who have the front and audacity to sit behind their computer and send absolutely disgraceful messages without anything happening to them.
Fighter ... Brave John in hospital
"If you said something like that in the street and there was a policeman around youd get arrested.
"I'm not one to complain to the police, but people like that need to be stopped.
"If it can be highlighted locally, if people are exposed in their local communities maybe it will stop them.
"I was brought up to have manners and to respect my elders. It does worry me.
"I've got a 13-year-old daughter and she could easily see what these people are saying on Twitter."
The Sun has been running the Target A Troll campaign urging people to shop those behind the abuse.
Sickeningly this is not the first time that John has suffered on the micro-blogging site.
In July last year a sicko taunted him about a dying 11-year-old cancer sufferer he had been helping.
The twisted messages were left on John's web page and were about terminally ill Jordan Houston.
