New studies show Levitra has more to offer than just erectile ...

Levitra (generic name Vardenafil) is ED (erectile dysfunction) medicine developed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals and several other major Pharmaceutical companies. It is a PED5 inhibitor class drug. That means it inhibits the effects of phosphodiesterase type 5 produced by the body. This allows greater relaxation of smooth muscle allowing for greater dilation of the muscles and increased blood flow. This is called vasodilatation. Because of its effectiveness in increasing blood flow to the penis it is marketed and sold for treating ED.

However, other diseases besides ED benefit from the use of vasodilators and new and ongoing research is looking at PED5 inhibitors. Below are a few of conditions now being studied for off label use of Vardenafil.

HIGH ALTITUDE PULMONARY EDEMA:

HAPE (High altitude pulmonary edema) occurs because at high altitudes the low air pressure makes it difficult for the body to maintain the level adequate oxygenlevels . It is often fatal. Increased pressure on the capillary and pulmonary pressure causes constriction and a buildup of fluid in the lungs. Vardenafil relaxes the smooth muscle in the lungs allowing for easier breathing, giving more time to get the patient to lower more manageable altitudes, increasing survivability.

REYNAUD?S DISEASE:

Reynaud?s disease is a condition that causes extremities like the tip of the nose, fingertips and toes and or ears to turn numb. The blood vessels spasm (alternating between open and constriction) decreasing blood flow to the affected areas. Often discoloration of the skin results over time from damage done by limited blood flow. During an attack the skin will turn white and feel cold, then blue and numb, then red, hot to the touch, and throbbing. Attacks generally last for minutes but in extreme circumstances may last for hours resulting damage to the area. Reynaud?s disease does not respond well to traditional vasodilator treatments. New studies with Vardenafil increased capillary blood flow during an attack significantly reducing the severity and length of the attack. A 2011 German study showed that the number of Reynaud?s attacks and their severity diminished with Vardenafil therapy.

While Levitra is an approved safe and effective treatment of ED, its mechanism for dilating smooth muscles is proving to be an important viable option for other diseases like: pulmonary hypertension, heart disease, stroke recovery, unhealing wounds, lower urinary tract symptoms and more. Continued studies of Levitra for such diseases, are sure to earn it more approved uses.
