Looking For Effective E-mail Marketing Techniques ... - Businesses

Most people hear the words ?e-mail marketing? and instantly think of spam, closing their minds to the idea. It?s a tough job to create e-mail marketing campaigns that are engaging and get customers to buy, but it can be done. Read the following article to learn of methods you can use right away.

Every single person on your e-mail marketing list must request a spot on it, so never add anyone against their will. You will lose customers and possible even your website host if you engage in spam.

Utilize email previewers in order to take advantage of your preheader material. Preheaders are just the beginning line of text that comes from the body of the email, that is highlighted at the very top. Gmail and various other email providers use that line of text after the subject line, so it will grab the reader?s attention.

TIP! When you are following up with customers, you should try to send out a follow-up email with a message to remind them about your products. Invite them to shop at your store as well.

Be sure the emails you send are short and to the point. Your language should be as direct as possible. Your customers will appreciate that you value their time. It will also increase the chances of your readers reading all the way to the end of the email. Although your most important information should be at the top of the email, there are always important links and content near the end as well.

Only send emails to people that you know. Emailing random people is considered spam and could get you in trouble with your ISP or web host. They?ll wonder whether they are interesting in what you are selling or not. It?s likely that they?ll just delete your email, which simply wasted your precious time.

TIP! Use an interesting subject line so that people want to open the email right away. Your customers should be excited when they read the subject line, so they want to open the email.

Use few graphics when creating email promoting programs. Since some email programs block graphics, any email which contains a lot of graphics will not display correctly to recipients that have these types of email programs. Also, your emails may end up in the spam folder if they contain too many graphics.

Know your audience in order to have a marketing campaign that is successful. Think about what readers might want to see. Or, what they will like to read. Is there a way to turn these ideas into sales? Use these answers to chart a course for yourself.

PFT: Problem with NFL's year-round Adderall ban

John HarbaughAP

The Ravens are 9-2, but it hasn?t been an easy season.? Apart from key injuries and periodic ineffectiveness and a defense that ain?t what it used to be, coach John Harbaugh had to deal with an unexpected uprising last month.

The moment came, according to Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports, on Halloween morning.? Back from a bye-week break after a backbreaking loss to the Texans, Harbaugh told the team that they?d be practicing in full pads.? Several veteran players openly challenged their head coach.

?It was practically a mutiny,? a Ravens player told Silver.? ?It came very close to getting out of control. But the way Coach Harbaugh handled it was amazing.? He let people have their say, and he listened, and he explained himself, and pretty soon it was like a big group-therapy session.? In the end, a lot of positive things were said.? We didn?t practice in pads, but we came out of there stronger as a group.?

Coincidentally (or not), the Ravens haven?t lost since then.

?I?ve never seen a head coach handle anything like that as well as he did,? a Ravens assistant who attended the meeting told Silver.? ?There were some things said where we were like, Damn.

?A lot of coaches would have acted like dictators and been very sensitive about the way their authority was being questioned.? John said, ?Hey, let?s talk about this.?? He showed great leadership.? Instead of worrying that it would make him seem weak, he turned it into a strength.?

Harbaugh realizes the value of encouraging players to speak their mind.

?I wasn?t threatened by it,? Harbaugh said.? ?That?s the main thing.? And, you know, they had some good points, and I had some good points.? Other guys stood up and said some great things.? To me, it embodied everything that you should have on a team.

?The point was that, we have what I call ?Open Mic,? and we can all say anything that we need to say and have to say. You know then that you?re responsible ? when you say it, everybody?s gonna hear it, so you?d better make it your best stuff.

?That brings out the best.? Otherwise, it?s ?Why are they sneaking around talking behind corners??? You know what I mean?? If you?ve got something, you put it right out here in front of me.? I?m man enough to handle it.? If you?re right, then you?re right!? It?s OK to be right.? But more important it?s OK to be wrong.? And it?s OK for me to be wrong, too.?

By being willing to admit that he?s wrong and make changes, Harbaugh could be poised to take his team right to the Super Bowl.

In fact, the only thing Harbaugh may have done wrong in this episode is to let it be known what happened.? Now, other coaches facing similar challenges may opt not to be hardheaded, which could help their own teams play better, possibly when playing the Ravens.

Breast Cancer Risk Increase with Repeat Imaging - Diagnostic ...

CHICAGO ? Between 1980 and 2006, the per capita exposure to radiation from diagnostic imaging in America increased six-fold. And now, new research suggests that breast cancer risk estimates increase with frequent CT scans, particularly among younger patients, according to a study presented at RSNA 2012.

?We already know there is an increased risk of cancer after an exposure to radiation that's in the same range as is delivered by imaging, particularly CT exams,? said Ginger Merry, MD, breast imaging fellow at Chicago's Prentice Women's Hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and leader of the study.

Since breast tissue is known to be particularly radiosensitive, researchers aimed to examine the impact of increased imaging on radiation exposure and resulting breast cancer risk. Merry and her colleagues performed a retrospective study of about 250,000 women enrolled in a large integrated health care system between 2000 and 2010.

?We gathered data on all examinations that could deliver radiation to the breast tissue, including CT, radiography, fluoroscopy and nuclear medicine, performed by injecting a radiopharmaceutical into the blood stream. Over the 10 year period, we looked at their cumulative radiation exposure,? Merry said.

Using smaller data samples, Merry and her team were able to estimate the average radiation dose given during each examination and calculate the associated breast cancer risk. Then, they compared the imaging-risk to a baseline risk, beginning 10 years after the exposure.

"We found that the estimated breast radiation doses from CT were highly variable across patients, with the highest doses coming from multiple-phase cardiac and chest CT examinations, where successive images of the organ being studied are captured," said senior author Rebecca Smith-Bindman, MD, of the University of California, San Francisco.

More troubling, pediatric doses were more similar than expected to doses administered to adults, and when repeated CT examinations were performed at an early age, young women had an increased risk of breast cancer.

?Younger women are at the highest risk due to increased radiosensitivity of breast tissue and their longer lifespans, and therefore a longer time period in which to develop breast cancer,? Merry said.

For example, if a girl with no other familial or genetic risk factors of breast cancer were to have two chest CT scans at age 15, her risk at age 25 of developing breast cancer in the next 10 years would double. The longer the time since the exposure, the greater the risk of cancer.

To lower imaging-associated breast cancer risk, radiologists should carefully evaluate the need for imaging and monitor radiation doses given with each exam, Smith-Bindman said. Radiation exposure could also be minimized by decreasing the amount of multi-phase protocols whenever possible.

"If imaging is truly indicated, then the risk of developing cancer is small and should not dissuade women from getting the test they need," she said. "On the other hand, a lot of patients are undergoing repeat chest and cardiac CT, many of which aren't necessary. Women, and particularly young women, should understand there is a small but real potential risk of breast cancer associated with cardiac and chest CT, and the risk increases with the number of scans."

Electrical workers union seeks to organize Idaho Power dispatchers

A group of Idaho Power employees want to join a union.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 125 has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board on behalf of transmission dispatchers with Idaho Power Co.

The board is scheduled to hold a hearing today in Boise to determine if the employees are eligible for the union and who would be the appropriate bargaining unit, said Rocky Clark, international representative for the IBEW in Idaho Falls.

?We are looking forward, if they are successful, to building a good relationship with Idaho Power just as we have with the 98 percent of investor-owned utilities that we represent,? Clark said.

The board will hold a hearing soon on the issue and, if it approves, a vote will follow.

?We will work with the NLRB to determine which employees should be included in the voting unit, when the election will be held and other related details,? said Dan Minor, Idaho Power executive vice president and chief operating officer. ?We are working hard to ensure that our employees are educated about the process, and we hope that the voting employees will agree that union representation is not the right choice for them or for Idaho Power.?

The IBEW recently organized the transmission dispatchers for the Western Systems Coordinating Council, which runs the region?s electric transmission system. That led it to petition for Idaho Power, whose employees have never had union representation in 100 years.

?Throughout our history, Idaho Power has consistently treated its employees fairly and respectfully and has worked hard to ensure good working conditions and competitive wages and benefits for all employees,? Minor said.

Clark estimated the number of dispatchers at about 25. He said he expects the company to seek eligibility for a larger group to dilute the vote.

Preparation for the Great Critical Incident: First Aid Emergency ...

    By J.W. Caesar

Hosea 4: 6 (KJV) My people perish from a lack of knowledge.

Knowledge is power for survival when it comes to overcoming disasters. It is vital to get educated on how to survive in the event of a myriad disaster scenerios. Many people die or get injured because they did not adequately plan, prepare or mitigate for unseen emergencies. In order to win the war on disasters; American citizens must take disaster preparation seriously and strengthen themselves mentally, spiritually, and physically to overcome the challenges in the future.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency states on their website that there are actions that should be taken before, during, and after an event that are unique to each hazard. Each person or group should identify the hazards that have happened or could happen in their area and plan for the unique actions for each hazard. They further note that mitigation can be defined as actions to reduce loss of life and property by decreasing the impact of disasters.? What this means is??taking action now??before the next disaster?to reduce human and financial consequences later (analyzing risk, reducing risk, insuring against risk).? Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without these actions, people jeopardize their safety, financial security, and self-reliance and quality of life.

Building an emergency kit with first aid equipment and taking medical classes are best practices in mitigation that can assist in reducing risk and loss to families and the community.? It is important to analyze what type of hazards would affect the community during a disaster, as well the decision to shelter in place or evacuate to a safe location.? By following this risk analysis process, it would help clarify what type and size of container or bag to place first aid items inside, the quantity, what too and what not to pack, where to pack it, the environment, hazard scenario and number of people it can provide care too. Your first aid kit or emergency supplies should be designed around an all hazards approach that insures against the risk of not being able to treat or prevent hazards from overtaking you and your group. These hazards can cause temporary or permanent damage to the critical infrastructure of this nation. Therefore everyone should be a stakeholder in public safety and security of this nation. As a result, many are designing their first aid kits around temporary disaster events where there is a short recovery period, while others are preparing their kits for a total collapse of the system where medical resources will be hard to find.

Caution: for medical legal and health safety reasons-Disaster Preparers should think about:

    1. Preparing physically, mentally, and spiritually now to adapt to changes caused by impact of disasters and?continuity of civil and infastructure recovery.
    2. Familiarizing with their local, state and federal laws on the boundaries of giving care to humans, pets and livestock.
    3. Getting prior training on how to use the items in the first aid kit.
    4. Working as a trained and covenant group, not loner.
    5. Trying to get written certification or medical authority to perform certain procedures.
    6. Not going beyond their scope of practice or their medical certifications.
    7. Abiding by the local laws of what is allowed in your first aid or medical kit.
    8. (Personal, Force, Asset?Protection)Avoiding making themselves a target for thieves, murderers, drug addicts that use false emergency scenes or requests for help.

A first aid kit can be purchased at many stores, disaster preparedness organizations and online merchants. Medical supplies can also be purchased individually to build your own kit.? Some have also combined the two as one mitigation measure. Others have crafted their own replacement first aid products by improvising. They use tampons for bleeding, card board for splints, and other homemade items, or pet supplies for their kit?s inventory. The real issue is finding the right items and kit skin for your needs. There are many questionable claims to first kits such as the number of people that it can actually treat in an emergency, the quality, sterility and durability of items, the protective covering of the container or bag and excessive prices for minimal supplies. This is why it is vital to do a risk analysis and make appropriate mitigation decisions for your own needs from an all hazards approach.

    Medical Supplies and their Skins

Medical supplies for a first aid kit can be put inside of a various items that are all weather resistant, waterproof, durable, floatable, not previously had any toxic or corrosive materials stored inside of it, and clearly marked as a first aid or medical kit. Ziploc bags and plastic trash bags can give extra all weather protection and longetivity of items. The kit should also be easy to carry with straps or handles, have reasonable space or compartments for medical items, and easy to open or secure during an emergency. The size and type of first aid emergency kit may be based on varied factors such as the personal needs of the individual, group, or community, different hazards, ?medical training, number of sick and injured, terrain, response time, life cycle of disaster, use with vehicles, walking distance, evacuation, and weather.

    Examples:

    • Military Unfolding zippered Aid Bag M-3 & M-17
    • Military Chest with handles
    • Military Aid Station chest containers
    • Military hard plastic or metal containers
    • Nylon, Leather or Canvas Back Packs
    • Luggage with wheels and handle
    • Purse or designer bag
    • Lunch box
    • Square or rectangle storage containers
    • Tupperware containers
    • Plastic Ice Cream or used Food Containers
    • Hunting vests
    • Belt Pouches

A well-stocked and well maintained list of items in the first aid kit should be kept up to date at all times by rotating and replacing items.? A best practice for maintaining the mitigation investment of life saving equipment is doing inventory and preventative maintenance checks before and after using the kit. It can take place on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly cycle. ?The outside and inside of the emergency kit should be inspected for damage such as cracks, tears or holes. Mitigations measures such as health safety inspections for spoilage and expiration dates of items are important also.? However, some questions have been raised about keeping items regardless of expiration dates because of future scarcity of items during extreme disaster periods. These questions should be addressed by medical authorities who are expert in disasters and laws of the land. ?In any case, some items can lose their shelf life, sterility, durability, and may become toxic because of the hot storage temperatures. Another temperature issue is freezing. ?Solutions can freeze causing the containers to crack and break causing contamination of other items or damaging the first aid container.

The kit should work as expected: treat injuries and save life when you need it and cause no harm when it is not needed. It is vital to verify that the items consisting within the kit still function as expected, including the batteries in the medical equipment. The first aid kit should be stored in a place that is of the right temperature for medical supplies, in a safe location, away from pests, where no damage can occur, can be accessible to adults, but not to children or pets that can be poisoned and injured.

In summary, disasters can happen at anytime and anyplace. The consequences of not preparing for them may be immeasurable. To minimize this risk, it is vital to mitigate these impacts by building an emergency first aid kit based on analyzing, reducing, and insuring against future risks. It would be wise to assemble an emergency first aid kit that is adaptable and maintainable for your needs, take first aid classes, get familiarized with medical ? legal laws, learn how to take protective measures in emergency situations, and establish mutual-aid and covenant partnerships well in advance of an emergency situation. All of these steps help reduce the impact of hazards associated with future events and improve the chances of winning the war over disasters.? Americans, must remember that everyone is a stakeholder in public safety, God given freedoms, continuity of civil government,?and protecting the critical infastructure and key resources of this nation.

    Dinah Sheridan: 1920-2012

Actress Dinah Sheridan, who became best known for her work in films such as The Railway Children and Genevieve and later for her TV appearances, has died at the age of 92.

Born Dinah Mec in 1920 to a Russian father and German mother, she changed her name upon entering show business as her birth surname was pronounced ?mess? and she didn?t want to give critics any free ammunition.

She didn?t need to worry: her performances were largely acclaimed, including roles in Calling Paul Temple and Paul Temple?s Triumph before World War II broke out and she gave up her career to become an ambulance driver.

Sheridan returned to films in the post-War period, working on such titles as David Lean?s Breaking The Sound Barrier and 1980?s The Mirror Crack?d, in which she co-starred with Angela Lansbury.

But her performances in 1953?s Genevieve and 1970?s The Railway Children are the ones she?ll be remembered for, at least on the big screen.

Later in her career, she worked most on television, with a successful stint on ?80s sitcom Don?t Wait Up and a role that gained her science fiction immortality as High Chancellor Flavia in The Five Doctors.

Married four times, she?s survived by her children, former Tory Party chairman Jeremy Hanley and actress Jenny Hanley.

Rolling Stones turn back clock, rock in London

    By Mike Collett-White, Reuters

LONDON -- The Rolling Stones turned back the clock in style on Sunday with their first concert in five years, strutting and swaggering their way through hit after familiar hit to celebrate 50 years in business.

    Toby Melville / Reuters

The Rolling Stones perform at the O2 Arena in London on Sunday, Nov. 25.

Before a packed crowd of 20,000 at London's O2 Arena, they banished doubts that age may have slowed down one of the world's greatest rock and roll bands, as lead singer Mick Jagger launched into "I Wanna Be Your Man."

More than two hours of high-octane, blues-infused rock later, and they were still going strong with an impressive encore comprising "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

In between there were guest appearances from American R&B singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige, who delivered a rousing duet with Jagger on "Gimme Shelter" and guitarist Jeff Beck who provided the power chords for "I'm Going Down."

Former Rolling Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor were also back in the fold, performing with the regular quartet of Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards on guitar and Charlie Watts on drums for the first time in 20 years.

"It took us 50 years to get from Dartford to Greenwich!" said Jagger, referring to their roots just a few miles from the venue in southeast London. "But you know, we made it. What's even more amazing is that you're still coming to see us ... we can't thank you enough."

The Sunday night gig was the first of two at the O2 Arena before the band crosses the Atlantic to play three dates in the United States.

The mini-tour is the culmination of a busy few months of events, rehearsals and recordings to mark 50 years since the rockers first took to the stage at the Marquee Club on London's Oxford Street in July, 1962.

There has been a photo album, two new songs, a music video, a documentary film, a blitz of media appearances and a handful of warm-up gigs in Paris.

    'Style and panache'
The reunion nearly did not happen. One factor behind the long break since their record-breaking "A Bigger Bang" tour in 2007 has been Wood's struggle with alcohol addiction, while Jagger and Richards also fell out over comments the guitarist made about the singer in a 2010 autobiography.

But they eventually buried the hatchet, and Richards joked in a recent interview: "We can't get divorced?-- we're doing it for the kids!"

Critics were fulsome in their praise of the first comeback gig.

"Keith Richards has said that the beauty of rock and roll is that every night a different band might be the world's greatest. Well, last night at the O2 Arena, it was the turn of the Rolling Stones themselves to lay claim to the title they invented," wrote Neil McCormick of the Daily Telegraph.

"And they did it with some style and panache."

The big question on every fan's lips is whether the five concerts lead to a world tour and even new material. The Stones sang their two new tracks "Doom and Gloom" and "One More Shot," which appeared on their latest greatest hits album "GRRR!".

Richards has hinted that the five concerts ending at the Newark Prudential Center in the United States on Dec. 15 would not be the last.

"Once the juggernaut starts rolling, it ain't gonna stop," he told Rolling Stone magazine. "So without sort of saying definitely yes?-- yeah. We ain't doing all this for four gigs!"

The band has come in for criticism from fans about the high price of tickets to the shows?-- they ranged from around 95 pounds ($150) to up to 950 pounds for a VIP seat.

The flamboyant veterans, whose average age is 68, have defended the costs, saying the shows were expensive to put on, although specialist music publication Billboard reported the band would earn $25 million from the four shows initially announced. A fifth was added later.

"Everybody all right there in the cheap seats," Jagger asked pointedly as he looked high to his left at the arena. "They're not really cheap though are they? That's the trouble."

Among the biggest cheers on the night were for classics including "Wild Horses", "It's Only Rock and Roll" and "Start Me Up."

There was even time for the odd reference to their advancing years.

"Good to see you all," said Richards with a mischievous grin. "Good to see anybody."

Dot Earth Blog: Creating a Vital Long View for Gauging Environmental Change

[Production note: I'm helping my older son relocate to New Orleans (22 hours of driving) so comment moderation and posting will be unavoidably sporadic for a few days.]

Last year,?Michael SanClements, an ecologist affiliated with the?Institute?of Arctic & Alpine Research at the University of Colorado, sent a Dot Earth ?Postcard? about a project studying soil microbes in Antarctica. Here?s a fresh contribution from SanClements, along with colleague Jeff Taylor,?from the other end of the planet ? Alaska?s Arctic tundra.

They are both staff scientists with the?National Ecological Observatory Network, an initiative supported by the National Science Foundation that has a goal of creating a view of ecological change that spans the continent over the next three decades. As they explain below, without consistent monitoring, it?s hard to gauge the scope and causes of changes in environmental conditions:?

Some ecosystems provide economic and social benefits at the local level. Others exist far from our cities in inconceivably large landscapes and have the ability to influence processes at the global scale. The tundra is such a place ? remote, vast and home to enormous stores of frozen carbon which play a critical role in our climate?s future. Earlier this fall, we visited the tundra as part of a massive new project which will monitor ecological change across all of the continent?s major ecosystems.

Toolik Field Station ? 158 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska. ?It?s dusk and we?ve just arrived. Thom Walker, the assistant camp manager, has been kind enough to save us some dinner.? From the windows in the cafeteria, we can see ptarmigan, white against the brown of the tundra. And in the distance, more white ? the snow-covered Brooks Range rising to meet an enormous autumn moon. A beautiful landscape, and one we consider ourselves lucky to spend time in.

We?re here because we need to prepare a temporary meteorological station to survive the long dark winter. Built in June by Dr. Henry Loescher, the tower, located high on a ridge overlooking the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and Dalton Highway, is collecting data on prevailing wind directions and annual temperature variations that are crucial for the design and construction of a National Ecological Observatory Network research site. Eventually, a tower will be built here that will measure not just meteorological data, but a suite of observations related to solar radiation, greenhouse gases, pollutants, the terrestrial carbon cycle and soil.

With six such sites planned in Alaska, and 60 total in the United Sates, this network, best known under the acronym NEON, is the world?s first continental scale ecological observatory. Over the next 30 years, these sites will collect hundreds of terabytes of ecological data annually to help understand the impacts of climate change, land-use change and invasive species on natural resources and biodiversity.

The Toolik Field Station and tower site are extremely remote. We flew into Deadhorse, or Prudhoe Bay as it?s often called. It?s not so much a town as a rugged industrial work camp situated near the frigid Arctic Ocean at the far end of the pipeline; it exists mainly to facilitate the extraction and pumping of oil. From there, you head south on the Dalton highway, the lone road, for hundreds of miles. After three bumpy, sometimes scary and always beautiful hours you?ll find Toolik Field Station. Situated on the north side of the Brooks Range and the shores of Toolik Lake, the station supports hundreds of scientists each year as they study the changing Arctic.

In this era of rapid environmental change driven by the pressures of expanding human population and a changing climate, long-term ecological research is more important than ever. Short-term data sets are like snapshots of the environment at a single point in time. They lack the temporal context to effectively answer questions about the trajectory and causes of environmental change.

Initiatives like NEON and the Long Term Ecological Research Network aim to help us to track and understand the effects of human activities on ecosystems that provide valuable services to society. It may not be as sexy as the Mars Curiosity Rover or a big field campaign to an exotic place, but sustained, long-term observations are essential to answering many scientific questions and may one day be used by future generations to answer questions that haven?t been asked yet.

New Jersey man with cannibalism fetish charged with luring teen

(Reuters) - A New Jersey man accused of chatting online about his sexual fantasies of kidnapping, raping and eating children has been charged with luring a 15-year-old boy to Pennsylvania for sex, federal authorities said on Wednesday.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Newark said Robert Mucha, 56, met the boy through his mother, who lived in Sussex County, New Jersey, where Mucha now lives.

In October 2010, Mucha persuaded the boy to visit him by promising to take him to an amusement park, after which the boy would spend the night in his apartment. On the night of the visit, Mucha fondled the boy, who objected and left the apartment, the criminal complaint lodged against him said.

Mucha, of Newton, New Jersey, was charged with possessing child pornography in a separate case in July.

Matthew Reilly, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office, said Mucha had been charged with a further count of possessing child pornography on his home computer.

If convicted of enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity, Mucha faces a maximum sentence of life behind bars, Reilly said.

According to the charges, Mucha used a web-based chat service on multiple occasions to communicate with individuals who shared his sexual fascination with child cannibalism.

Many of their communications focused on how they might "abduct the children, drug them, roast them and, ultimately, consume them," the criminal complaint said.

Guest Post: The American Diet: Self-Destruction Never Tasted So ...

Submitted by Charles Hugh-Smith of OfTwoMinds blog,

The atomized and empty consumerist Status Quo is the "monster Id" behind the American diet.

    ?

I know it may appear unduly harsh to discuss America's self-destructive dietary "monster Id" right before the Thanksgiving day feasting, but when is it more appropriate?

    ?

There are a great many disconnects between reality and what Americans believe out of convenience ("no snowflake feels responsible for the avalanche") or propaganda, but perhaps none is more visible than the disconnect between what we're collectively doing to our health with the food we consume.

    ?

The Chinese have an apt saying" "Disease comes through the mouth," meaning disease comes from what we eat.

    ?

    ?

    ?

Here's a chart which depicts how U.S. healthcare costs are rising geometrically, far outstripping our economic competitors:

    ?

    ?

The nation cannot afford the present sickcare costs of 20% of GDP; how can it afford tripling what is spent on sickcare? Simple answer: it cannot.

    ?

The obesity epidemic can be viewed visually via this slideshow map of the U.S.:

    ?

    ?

Clearly, obesity has exploded into a pandemic in just a single generation.

    ?

Interestingly, all the usual explanations--the rise of fast foods, women joining the workforce and thus the decline of the home-cooked meal and the decline of physical labor jobs--fail to explain the dramatic increase for the reason that all these conditions were already present in 1985.

    ?

Women had already joined the workforce en masse, fast-food outlets were already on every corner and jobs requiring hard physical labor had already dwindled to a small percentage of our post-industrial, service-dominated economy.

    ?

So what is different between 1985 and the present? At least one factor is the increased consumption of sugary beverages: soda, specialty coffees, iced teas, and "juices," both the fake variety (colored sugar water with 10% actual fruit juice) and 100% juice.

    ?

This is another part of the disconnect:?it is no accident that consumption of fast food, sugar-water beverages, snacks, chips and convenience packaged foods has exploded: all these "foods" have been carefully engineered to "taste good" by triggering our naturally selected desire for what is rare in Nature: salt, sugar and fat.

    ?

    ?

Please view this documentary on the science of sugar consumption:

    ?

    ?

    ?

The essay traces out the devolution of China's once-universal if basic healthcare system for all into a U.S.-type system of full coverage for Elites and a more brutal one for everyone else: if you don't have the cash to pay for care, you die.

    ?

China has the largest population of diabetics and pre-diabetics in the world.?China's diabetes rate has skyrocketed to 11% of the adult population, slightly higher than that of the U.S., while its rates of other non-communicable "lifestyle" diseases such as heart disease have also soared to U.S. levels.

    ?

China Diabetes Triples?(via Joel M.)?"Beijing doctor Li Guangwei sees China?s struggle with 90 million diabetes sufferers daily."

    ?

The problem is global, as the American diet of fast-food, sodas, salty-fatty-sugary snacks and prepared "convenience food" spreads throughout the world:

    ?

    ?

Next time you're in a fast food outlet or a supermarket, try to find something you can eat that won't harm you.?It will be a challenge, I guarantee you.

    • chips: out, too much fat, too much salt
    • fries: out, too much fat, too much salt
    • sausage: out, too much fat, too much salt
    • fast food in general: out, too much fat, too much salt
    • salted nuts: out, too much salt
    • canned goods: out, too much salt
    • most cereals: out, too much salt
    • bottled salad dressings: out, too much salt
    • sports drinks: out, too much salt
    • pre-packaged salads: out, too much salt in the dressing
    • frozen meals: out, too much salt
    • packaged snacks: out, too much salt
    • packaged noodles: out, too much salt

    ?

    ?

I have written extensively on health, fitness, diet and diabesity over the years:

    ?

    ?

    ?

All the individual is aware of is a hunger, a need for something more. The fact that obese people often eat when they are not physically hungry offers a clue to what is going on. Indeed, they are hungry -- they just aren't hungry for food. They are hungry for connection.Food is the most tangible, direct confirmation of our connection to a living universe that loves us. On a primal biological level, the act of eating tells us, "I exist" and "I am loved." Indeed, food is the most basic expression of love, a token of intimacy, of bringing an outsider into the realm of self. That is why it is customary in most countries to offer food to a guest, and why it is rude to refuse it. To feed another is, in this sense, an intimate act, an opening of the sacred boundaries of self.
When, as today, this intimate act has become a subject of commerce, and food a commodity, the entire food system reeks of obscenity.

This identifies something causally profound that is never addressed in "research" into the diabesity epidemic because it requires questioning the entire atomized and empty consumerist Status Quo.?The emptiness of American consumerism does not lend itself to quantification like measuring leptin levels. But it is the "monster Id" behind the Thanatos American diet.

    ?

The last part of the disconnect is the broken link between our worship of convenience and self-destruction.?Wanting a pill to fix all our problems, wanting to drive everywhere, eliminating physical fitness from our schools, addictive sedentary digital games, the profitability of managing chronic "lifestyle" diseases--it's all connected:

Causes of Ovarian Cancer ? 8 Possible Underlying Conditions ...

The precise causes of ovarian cancer remains unidentified to medical studies up to this present state of time. Only theories developed to assume the causes. Women who have gone through the post-menopausal stage are diagnosed of this ailment. Also, those who suffer obesity, using fertility drug for more than one year, taking estrogen replacement therapy (Medication that contains female hormones) and can no longer bear a child.

Here are some possible assumptions of medical researches on what causes the ovarian cancer:

It may be the relationship of ovulation and risk of ovulation cancer. It concludes that women who have been pregnant and who have not been using contraceptive pills can be more susceptible of having this. Furthermore, the early start as well as the late start of having menstruation is also associated with ovarian cancer.
Another assumption is linking to cancer-causing substances enter through the vagina up to the ovaries.
Male hormones can be a cause of ovarian cancer like taking androgens.
Genetic factors can increase the risk of getting ovarian cancer. IF a person inherited a defect (mutation) from one of the parents, the cancer-preventing protein is less likely effective and that increase the chances of inherit the disease. Most women have this inherited gene mutation.
Experts say that the longer the hormone replacement therapy continues the more the women are at risk of getting it.
Once a person was diagnosed of breast cancer, it posed threat of having it as well.
Unhealthy diet leading to obesity is one possible factor. In most studies, overweight in later age have twice the risk of those who are perfectly fit.
30% of women who have endometriosis ( cells inside the uterus are found emerging outside the uterus) and using Danazol medicine is one main possible cause

Tumors form in the ovaries if non-cancerous is benign or malignant if it is cancerous. Three types of tumor are epithelial cell (start on the lining of ovaries), germ cell (most are benign and found in the cell which produces the eggs), and stromal (start off in the cells make female hormones)

A related death under this cancer classification is well known to many. It kills 15,000 lives in the US each passing year and to countless number of women worldwide. Doctors, medical researches are still looking for accurate causes of this deadly ailment. Risk factors (age, obesity, reproductive history, gynecologic surgery, fertility drugs, androgens, estrogen and hormone therapy, and family history) of developing ovarian cancer do not mean that everyone can get the disease and do not apply to all.

Birth control pills as many people are unaware can decrease the possibility of having it to develop. Clinical studies reported that women who are taking the pills for more than 5 years are less likely susceptible to develop this kind of cancer with the percentage of 50-70%. Some other decreasing factors are having children and with no family history of cancer.

Lucas Mattioneli is also a freelance writer who like to share holistic and natural ways get relief from common health problems. Tuareg rebels battle Islamists for north Mali town

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Islamist gunmen fought Tuareg separatist rebels on Monday in a battle for control of the town of Menaka in Mali's northern desert, close to the border with Niger, both sides said.

The renewed fighting came as African leaders put the finishing touches on an international intervention plan to retake Mali's north from a patchwork of armed groups.

"The fighting started early this morning and it is ongoing," said Moussa Ag Acharatoumane, a France-based spokesman for the independence-seeking MNLA Tuareg group.

"We have not given up on Menaka," he added.

A spokesman for al Qaeda-linked Islamist group MUJWA said its fighters had already seized control of the town, about 100 km (60 miles) from the Niger border, in clashes that had left many MNLA fighters "dead, wounded, and imprisoned."

Neither side could give details on casualties.

The MNLA declared an independent Tuareg homeland in April after routing government troops in the wake of a March coup, but it has since lost control of the zone to Islamists.

MNLA and MUJWA had also clashed on Friday, their first bout of fighting in several months, since MUJWA ousted the MNLA from the regional capital Gao in June.

West African mediator Burkina Faso has been holding talks with MNLA representatives and members of Ansar Dine, another al Qaeda-linked Islamist group occupying parts of Mali's north, as it seeks to open dialogue with some of the rebels.

Groups that come to a negotiated deal would be spared from the planned African offensive but MUJWA and AQIM - al Qaeda's North African wing which it operates alongside - are not being considered for talks.

The international military operation is due to be led by Mali's own military and backed by an African force but will not be ready until some time next year.

MUJWA has warned that any such intervention would trigger an Iraq-style quagmire in the West African state.

Fmr Houston DA Starts Concealed Gun Facebook Group

Kelly Burke, a former Houston County District Attorney has gone from prosecuting crimes, to fighting for something he says might better prevent them from happening.

Burke created a Facebook group called "Houston County Carries Concealed," and gathered around $800 for three digital?billboards in Warner Robins.? One sign features an elderly woman with a handgun that says "I carry concealed weapon because I can't carry a cop."? Burke says the goal is to inform citizens of concealed carry laws and encourage them to get armed for self-defense.

"It's to send a message to folks who think that coming to Houston County is a good idea to commit a crime, and making sure they understand when you come to Houston County you might run into somebody who is better armed than you."

Bill Waldorf, a gun salesman at Tony's Pawn Shop in Warner Robins says getting a concealed permit is easier than people think. "A lot of people don't do it because they're afraid they're going to be turned down or that it's a?complicated process, but actually you just go to the probate court in the county you live in."

But some?Warner Robins shoppers were concerned about?concealed weapons, which are allowed in public, including shopping centers, unless a businessowner specifically says otherwise. "When you're out in public and you're shopping with?your family, especially around the holidays, you?have kids with you. There's no reason for you to be carrying a gun. For what? What are you trying to protect yourself from?," says Ebony Dyson of Perry.?

Remember kiddies, if you choose to drive at 100mph on crowded city streets, PLEASE FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS.

Without knowing the details, I suspect the deaths had more to do with the reason people were drinking 5 Hour Energy than with the stuff itself.

For instance, college kids drink it so they can drink more alcohol before they have to pass out. That sort of thing.

I've approached them with a certain caution just because of the whole crash and burn concept.

however, I wonder caffeine's use in "Medicine Man" helped popularize them.

Hey! It's called 5-Hour Energy, what happens in hour 6 is not specified.

The urge to rule others comes out in many ways.

Medical reasons, especially easily targeted ones, no matter how nonscientific, are especially appealing.

    Burn the witch!
It's that sort of thinking, made modern.

But a close analysis of the report itself leads me to conclude that two of those deaths were reported twice, lowering the number to a still-disturbing 11.

Still-disturbing? That figure is for 4 years. (See NYT article linked to in Forbes article.) 2.75 deaths per year "that cited the possible involvement of 5-Hour Energy." You're probably more likely to die from someone jumping out from behind a corner and going "Boo!"

More than anything, this illustrates the incredible heights of absurdity our MSM has reached. You're probably more likely to choke to death on a toothpick.

Where is Schumer on this? I always look to Chuck for sanity in these matters.

Some people are more sensitive to caffeine. I used to have a condition in which I would get episodes of tachycardia, rapid pulse. I drank decaffeinated coffee. One time I was testifying in a court case and the lawyer wanted to meet during lunch so we sent out for sandwiches. The only soft drink available was called "Jolt Cola." It has twice the sugar and caffeine content of other colas.

I could barely get through my afternoon testimony and had to stop driving home for a while. A couple of years later, I had a cardiac cath procedure that identified an abnormal connection in my heart, had it zapped, and I have no more trouble with tachycardia.

I can imagine 13 people with the same condition dumb enough to drink energy drinks. If I had one of those attacks now, I would die as I cannot tolerate a pulse over 136 now. In an attack it would go over 200. That condition, called PAT, is fairly common.

They drank a 5-hour Energy right after the alcohol enema. One of their friends told them it was the antidote.

They've taken cold medicine off the market for less. Expect regulation of your coffee and tea soon.

The owner was on Fox last week. He said that there were other factors in the deaths. He also mentioned that there more caffeine in any particular Starbucks drink than there is in a 5 Hour Energy drink. He said it's people looking for money.

These people have decided that there's a correlation between the deaths and 5 Hour Energy. Once again, correlation does not indicate causation.

What other conditions did the deceased have? What might the deceased have in common other than a 5 Hour Energy? I heard that one of the deceased died 2 or more days after consuming a 5 Hour Energy. Did that person also consume, say, potato chips 2 days before death? Who's to say it wasn't the potato chips?

Each of these deaths, 11 or 13, is a tragedy to the family and friends of the deceased. But 11 or 13 deaths over 4 years (and how many millions or tens or hundreds of millions 5 Hour Energies consumed) is nothing. I certain if we looked, we'd find more people dying of choking on pretzels.

Look what they've done with baby cribs. We can't use drop side baby cribs anymore because there were a few deaths correlated to drop side cribs. The number of deaths over a ten year period was quite low, less than 3 figures IIRC. But all baby furniture manufacturers had to take a loss on all their inventory of drop side cribs when the Consumer Safety board banned them. Stores had to eat inventory. Consumers couldn't sell their cribs when they weren't needed anymore. The secondary market also went away.

Tens or hundreds of Millions of children survived drop sided baby cribs. Once my children started pulling up to stand in their cribs I would check the connections (bolts and screws) on a regular basis and tighten them often. Babies shake cribs. Parents must stay on top of crib maintenance. You don't just put it together and forget it.

Someone upthread mentioned Buckyballs. They've stopped making them. They still have other products, but won't be making Buckyballs anymore. Because a couple of kids swallowed some and they held different sections of the intestines together and required surgery to remove. Buckyballs were clearly marked for adults only. Do not let children play with them.

I can't remember the product, but recently I heard about one that might be banned based only on what might happen with it. There have been absolutely zero complaints or injuries. But still someone wants to ban it (whatever it is).

Look at them, though -- the drinks are tiny (Frappuccino comes in 9.5 oz bottles; this is <2 oz.). People are probably popping them repeatedly throughout a day, not just drinking one in lieu of a cup of tea.

    A. Everybody dies.

    B. Everybody does stuff before they die.

    C. Doing stuff kills people.

I wonder if this includes cases of people drinking the stuff, going outside, crossing the street and getting hit by a car?

Well, they did die shortly after drinking it.

There were a number of documented AIDS deaths in Africa back in the 80s and 90s that were similar.

Someone is identified as having AIDS (without the benefit of an HIV test). They then died of something else like being hit by a car. Bingo! Another AIDS death to juice the stats.

It is worse than junk science. It is bullshit.

    John Henry

I bet a lot more people died who didn't drink them, so logically 5-Hour Energy is saving millions of lives. They should be required for all citizens.

Key takeaway: don' b drinkin' dis shid in Turkey or Scotland!

We often avoid identifying the cause and effect relationship for reasons of convenience, profit, and leverage.

5-hour energy drinks are expensive. All they are is caffeine and a vitamin "B" pill. And 1/20th the cost.

Take that instead. Your pee will turn sea green too, so you will know it's working.

I find myself dying for one sometimes.

Transplants and cancer treatment 'under threat' from superbug rise

One bug, New-Delhi metallo-1, an enzyme which attaches to E.coli bacteria but can jump to other species, has increased dramatically in the last five years.

It is brought into Britain predominantly by people travelling to the Indian sub-continent for surgery, those who have been treated in hospital there when they have fallen ill while on holiday and people with family connections there who are treated in both countries often.

Prof Livermore, director of antibiotic resistance monitoring at the HPA, said that in 2010 the HPA found one, two or three cases of NDM-1 a month, and now the official laboratory is finding finding that many every week.

E.coli can cause gastroenteritis, urinary-tract infections and more severe conditions, such as meningitis, serious kidney problems, blood poisoning and pneumonia.

Official figures show there were just seven cases found in England in 2008, which increased to 57 in 2011. In the first nine months of this year there were 74 cases already.

Bacteria carrying NDM-1 can only be treated with a handful of antibiotics, most of which are old and were discarded years ago because they are toxic.

As well as NDM-1, there are other multi-drug resistant organisms being imported into Britain. Drug-resistant TB is already a major problem but other new ones are entering the country too.

Prof Livermore said one called Oxa48 has been found on people being treated from the north African conflicts and there is 'international concern' about soliders from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars being repatriated carrying resistant Acinetobacter bacteria.

Prof Livermore also warned that patients with blood poisoning were becoming increasingly difficult to treat because it is so urgent they receive antibiotics quickly.

Doctors have to treat them 'blind' without knowing what bacteria is causing the infection and if it is resistant, as test results curenlty take two days.

Prof Livermore said: "If you get it wrong and chose the wrong antibiotic you lose two days and the mortality rate roughly doubles."

So they resort to using the most powerful class of antibiotics, the carbapenems, straight away.

Prof Livermore said this is driving resistance to this 'last resort' antibiotic and it may be less than ten years before there is widespread resistance to that group as well.

"It is like erosion on the East coast. How long before your house falls off the cliff? How long have we got left with carbapenems? Certainly years, not decades," he said.

He said it was vital that doctors assess the risks of each patient and if they are likely to be infected with a resistant bug but also called on more investment into the development of new antibiotics and rapid diagnostic tests.

Using genetic based methods instead of growing bacteria in the laboratory can mean test results are available in six hours instead of 48, but this technology is still in its infancy, he said.

In the meantime the best the NHS can do is monitor and screen any patient who has recently been treated in hospital abroad, isolate them quickly if they are found to have an infection and impose strict control measures to limit the spread.

Prof Laura Piddock, director of Antibiotic Action, said official figures were often the tip of the iceberg as only infections that entered the bloodstream were collected.

She said: "Doctors are facing patients now with infections that are extremely difficult to treat. They are faced with difficult decisions because they have to use very unpleasant drugs that can cause horrible side effects.

"This is happening now and we urgently need new drugs and faster ways of testing for what infections people have."

Experts at the World Health Organisation echoed concerns over resistance to carbapenems and warned that the lack of regulation of the drug, in Eastern European countries where many antibiotics are available over-the-counter, will 'worsen the problem'.

Ms Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said: ?Since their discovery over 70 years ago, antibiotics have kept most of us alive by overcoming bacterial infections that could otherwise have been fatal.

"The use of antibiotics ? and vaccines ? has lengthened our life-spans by 20 years on average.

?If we want to retain this medical miracle, we must fully understand when antibiotics work and do not work, and act accordingly. This is a matter for everybody, from those who set policies and strategies, carry out research, and produce and distribute antibiotics to those who prescribe and use them.?

The warnings came ahead of European Antibiotic Awareness day on Sunday.
