The deep and slow moving Barrow River flows through the length of Carlow County like its natural pulse and attracts walkers, leisure boaters, canoeists and a myriad of wildlife. Carlow Town is the county?s principal urban centre and an ideal place to stay overnight, with its impressive selection of B&B?s, restaurants, new cultural quarter and lively pubs. It even boasts its own local brewing company which makes three award winning beers, O?Hara?s, Molings and Curim.

We stayed at Avlon House B&B and were greeted at the door by our host and co-owner Tom Donagher. Avlon House is a 5 room B&B located on the outskirts of Carlow Town. Its plush furnishing and an exquisite attention to detail more resemble 5 star luxury accommodation. Tom had prepared a promotional folder and proposed itinerary for our following day?s tour round Carlow.

Tom?s passion for his home county was clearly evident and summed up the reasons behind Carlow?s burgeoning popularity as a visitor destination. ?Because Carlow is not generally recognised as a must see destination for tourists visiting Ireland, people are genuinely surprised as to what Carlow has to offer. When guests do spend time here and get to experience Carlow, we are finding that more and more people return for the relaxed pace of life and tranquillity of the area.?

We awoke the next morning to bright sunshine streaming through the bedroom window. After a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and salmon it was time to explore Carlow Town. The town has witnessed huge Government investment and regeneration in the past 15 years but has thankfully managed to retain a nice mix of traditional and new shop fronts and businesses.
We parked down by the redeveloped Waterfront area along the Barrow as a young man and his daughter were feeding swans. It was Saturday morning and the local Farmers Market was abuzz with shoppers and stall owners selling everything from homemade quiches, cakes, apple-tarts, jams, fresh fruit and vegetables. The local people seemed relaxed and happy to chat with visitors.
Our next stop was a visit to Carlow?s Cultural Quarter which includes a brand new 3 Million Euro county museum and 23 Million Euro Visual Arts Centre. The museum covers three floors and has a fascinating collection of exhibitions from traditional rural life in bygone years to Carlow?s once famous Sugar Factory.
