Hockey coach Scotty Bowman, sportscaster Brian Williams and former prime minister Paul Martin are among 66 notables being inducted to or promoted within the Order of Canada.
Former Canadian diplomat Robert Fowler, retired chief of defence staff Rick Hillier and Canadian Lt.-Gen. Charles Bouchard, who commanded the recent NATO military mission in Libya, are also among those receiving honours.
Storyteller Stuart McLean, host of the CBC Radio program The Vinyl Cafe, was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Others being honoured include: Kevin Lynch, former clerk of the Privy Council; billionaire Seymour Schulich, an investor and philanthropist; lawyer and businesswoman France Chretien Desmarais, the daughter of former prime minister Jean Chretien; newspaper columnist Alain Dubuc and Open Text Corp. chairman Tom Jenkins.
Bowman joins such hockey greats as Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr in the Order of Canada.
Considered one of the greatest hockey coaches of all-time, Bowman won a record nine Stanley Cups behind the benches of the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings.
Bowman holds the record for the coach with most wins in league history. He was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 1991.
Williams, perhaps best known for his coverage of the Olympic Games, has worked as a sportscaster for CBC and CTV.
Martin was the Liberal prime minister from 2003 to 2006 after serving as Chretien?s finance minister. He was named to the Order?s highest rank, Companion, ?for his distinguished contributions to Canadian politics and for his active involvement in promoting opportunities for Aboriginal Canadians.?
Fowler was kidnapped with colleague Louis Guay and held hostage by an al-Qaida faction for almost five months in the Sahara Desert. He and Guay were released in March 2009. Prime Minister Stephen Harper insisted no ransom had been paid for their release.
Hillier, the straight-talking Newfoundlander who rose to the job of Canada?s top soldier, was named to the second-highest rank, Officer of the Order. He did more than perhaps any other military leader to rally Canadians around their men and women in uniform during the early years of the war in Afghanistan. He was also instrumental in wrangling new money and equipment for his troops.
The Order of Canada recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Chosen by an independent panel based on nominations from the public, the order has three levels of membership ? companion, officer and member.
The awards will be presented by the Governor General at a ceremony at a later date.
Judging by his expression, the kid on the right saw this shit coming. NFL Hall of Famer (I have straight friends who explain these things) Deion Sanders is pouring lime on the corpse that is his marriage. His wife Pilar tearfully claims she found out on TMZ. Deion's daughter Deiondra wanted a word with Pilar on this and took it to Twitter. Pilar's hair isn't layed like Merry Christmas, according to Miss Deiondra. The names in this mess sound like one of those telenovelas that Michael K.'s abuelita used to beat his brat ass in front of.
Before she unleashed, Deiondra apologized to her father -- claiming Deion "is going to be very upset at me 4 he always takes the higher route."??
?Deiondra writes, "#HowYouDidntKnow but yo boxes have been packed for weeks now." She adds, "HowYoTopPriorityBeen yo marriage and yo kids when u flying out to see other n**gas ... yeah we know."?
Deiondra added, "All u had to do was be a supportive wife. Only thing u ever cared about doing with my dad is reality shows." "Pilar stop tryna play the victim. Maybe if u would of actually loved my dad and not loved the life he gave you we would be here today."?
That's right, Pilar, Miss Deiondra SAW your gold-diggin' result Louis Vuitton bags packed and ready in the damn hallway! She knew ALL about your dream to be Drunk Ass Tami Roman 2.0 (that's basketball, though - straight friends)! She SAW your triflin' ass on Expedia booking booty call flights! Deiondra SEES, bitch!
Pilar's lawyer says that the Sanders' marriage is between two adults and "doesn?t involve engaging this kind of faceless accusations made by his child." It's going to be hot when Deiondra starts tweeting him with hashtags like #YoClientIsSUSPECT and #HowYoTopPriorityBeenRepresentinThisForkedTongueDevil.
The next time my partner pisses me off, I'm going to ask Miss Deiondra to Tweet his ass with "#HowYouDidntKnow to wash that dish" or "#HowYoTopPriorityBeen taking pics of the dog with Instagram when your damn Dunkin' Donuts wrappers are piling up on the floor of our car?!?!"
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The U.S. telecommunications regulator is looking into a Verizon Wireless decision to charge $2 for one-time online and telephone bill payments.
"On behalf of American consumers, we're concerned about Verizon's actions and are looking into the matter," an official for the Federal Communications Commission said on Friday.
The day before, Verizon Wireless had said it would start charging the $2 fee on January 15, causing a storm of criticism from customers and industry commentators.
Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.

(Reuters) ? Private intelligence analysis firm Strategic Forecasting Inc., which was attacked by online hackers at the weekend, said in a letter to free subscribers that it has decided to delay the launching of its website by about a week.
The website of Strategic Forecasting, also known as Stratfor, has been offline for several days following the hacking attack.
"As part of our ongoing investigation, we have also decided to delay the launching of our website until a thorough review and adjustment by outside experts can be completed," Stratfor said in an email.
The firm had earlier disclosed that its website had been hacked and that some information about its corporate subscribers had been made public.
The hacking group known as Antisec has claimed responsibility for the attack and promised to cause "mayhem" by releasing stolen documents.
"An unauthorized party illegally obtained and disclosed personally identifiable information and related credit card data of some of our paying subscribers," Stratfor said in the email.
Stratfor also said in its letter that it would offer identity theft protection and monitoring services to affected subscribers.

PolygamousRanchKid writes "December 21, 2012 marks the end of the current cycle of the Mayan 'Long Count' calendar. And while this has had some fearful types preparing for the end of the world, others have been preparing to travel. The Mexican government is expecting 52 million tourists as part of their "Mundo Maya 2012," campaign to visit the five regions ? Chiapas, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Campeche, over the next 12 months. So, if you're wondering where to spend the last tourist dollars you'll have as a breathing human being or just want to see the looks on those faces when December 21 comes and goes uneventfully, President Felipe Calderon hopes you'll choose Mexico."
MUMBAI (Reuters) ? When Ind-Barath Power Infra Ltd dropped plans for a $200 million IPO earlier this year, it not only thwarted the fundraising plans of its controlling shareholder, but blocked an exit route for a clutch of private equity investors.
Those funds, including Sequoia Capital, Citigroup's (C.N) venture capital arm and 3i (III.L), invested a combined $223 million in Ind-Barath and may get a breather as the firm is in talks to sell a big chunk to buyout giants such as TPG Capital (TPG.UL) and Apollo Global Management (APO.N).
So-called secondary deals, when a private equity investor sells its holding to another such investor, have traditionally been less favored by buyout firms than an exit through an IPO or the sale of a company to an industry rival.
But with weak capital markets shutting off the IPO option for now and mergers between domestic corporate rivals still rare, owners of Indian companies and their private equity investors eyeing the exits will be forced to look at alternatives, including secondary market deals.
KPMG figures roughly $95 billion in maturing Indian private equity investments made during the bull market years of 2006-2008 will come up for sale over the next three years.
"Logic suggests that a good time for exits is not a good time for investing and vice versa," said Raja Parthasarathy, managing director at IDFC Private Equity, one of India's largest private equity funds.
"But the current environment appears to be challenging on both fronts, largely on account of continuing uncertainties around the macro outlook," he said.
In India, companies tend to want to go public, ready or not.
But India's benchmark stock index (.BSESN) is down more than a fifth this year, and 13 rate interest increases since early 2010 by the central bank have pushed up borrowing costs, slowed economic growth and made investors wary.
Private equity exits through the Indian IPO market dropped 66 percent this year to $85 million in 15 deals, according to data from VCCircle.
Overall, some $7 billion worth of public offers were either scrapped or deferred in 2011, of which $1.8 billion was backed by private equity investors, SMC Global said in a recent study.
However, secondary market private equity transactions are up 9 percent this year to $704 million in 29 deals, from $646 million in 14 deals last year, according to VCCircle data, and industry players expect that figure to grow.
SECOND-HAND SHOPPING
While private equity investors in India have generally been reluctant to sell to another buyout firm, as a partial exit through a secondary sale does not provide the liquidity that an IPO does, the current environment and pressure to exit are forcing a re-think.
"A secondary sale should not be viewed as a forbidden option, as it sometimes is," KPMG said in a recent report on Indian private equity.
"Secondary transactions offer relatively high returns...As the industry matures, more and more PE-funded companies will come up for sale," it said.
Recent deals include the partial exit in November by UK-based Aureos Capital, when it sold part of its $15 million investment in Continental Warehousing Corp to U.S. fund Warburg Pincus, which invested about $100 million in the company.
Earlier this year, Kotak Realty Fund, a unit of India's Kotak Mahindra Bank (KTKM.NS) sold its holding in Peepul Tree Properties to local rival Tata Realty Fund for $115 million.
The KPMG study said about one-third of private equity investments in India are in the red.
"In an exit environment driven by IPOs, such underperformers would indeed be hard to exit," it said.
GHOSTS OF INVESTMENTS PAST
Private equity funds invested more than $31.5 billion in India between 2006 and 2008, according to KPMG.
Assuming a five-year holding period and funds' expectations for returns of roughly three times, Indian exits valued at roughly $95 billion are poised to take place over the next three years, or $28 billion of exits per year, the study found.
By comparison, private equity funds spent a total of just $14 billion in Indian in their most active year of 2007, KPMG said.
Investors in private equity funds, known as limited partners, typically commit their money for 10 years, but fund managers generally like to turn over specific investments after roughly five years.
"Fund managers are definitely under pressure...as their average holding period is increasing," said Ajit Kumar, India head of Dubai-based fund Evolvence Capital, who expects a growing number of secondary exits as the industry matures.
Evolvence has invested about $400 million in India and is raising a $400 million India-dedicated fund.
"We may see improvement in secondary deal volumes in the second half of 2012. The public markets are also likely to turn better," he said.
Meanwhile, worries about the fate of boom-era investments have dampened sentiment in the fundraising market, as some 60 India-focused funds attempt to raise about $15 billion.
Investors whose previous investments in Indian private equity deals have not yet borne fruit may be reluctant to write checks to fund managers this time around.
"Ironically, those investments made then are proving to be one of the most vital roadblocks confronting the industry today," said Subbu Subramaniam, who was a founding partner at Baring India before setting up his own private equity firm, M-Cap fund advisors.
With all this talk of 360-degree customer service and Zappos ninjas who help babies out of burning buildings while taking orders for clogs, it's nice to remember that for every heartwarming tale of customer satisfaction there is a dude like Paul Christoforo. The tale begins with a controller accessory. It's called the Avonger en-kontrol (my misspelling) and it's some kind of octopus that helps you press more buttons on your game controller. We wrote it up in February 2011 so you can check it out there. A quick web search will bring up the actual product. I'm not about to give them any Google Juice.

Regretting Purchase When I saw the price of the Pandigital SuperNova 8", it was really hard to pass up. It seemed at the time and description that it was just what I was looking for. It wasn't. First of all, the casing is made of plastic, as well as the touch screen, this gives it a real cheap feel. The buttons, although well secured, feel like they could fall out at any minute. Performance is slow, and on some programs tends to hang. Doesn't come with many apps, and market androids apps are not compatible, there is a site that offers, but they are terrible. It can't play Netflix, many YouTube videos, but seems to be ok on music. There is more, but I'll stop there, it's a value, just not a good one. I should have just saved my money and purchased an I Pad or Kindle Fire. 12/17/2011
Love it It is not an ipad but it works fine for me. I purchased for my 5yr for christmas but i can't put it down. It is fast and faster when you upgrade the software. You can download the getjar app to find plenty of free apps and you could even download apps from amazon. It plays youtube fine for me and it does everything it says it will do. It is very responsive to the touch and downloading is fast depending on your internet service provider. I would buy another one over an ipad any day 12/19/2011
I just got this yesterday and I Love This Device. There are some amazing apps from angry birds to ESPN. I also like that with an SD Card You Can Expand Your Space To 32gb. Amazing Product and a Great Price. I would Recommend this to Everyone I Know 12/22/2011

Google+ now has more than 62 million users, according to Paul Allen, Ancestry.com founder and unofficial traffic analyst for Google's social network. That's not 62 million active users, though -- a point that everyone covering these numbers seems to have missed. It's just the number of total users. And specifically, it's the number of new surnames that Allen's team has tracked being created on the service. Because Google has aggressively integrated G+ into many other properties, including its top navigation bar and the OneBox, one would expect a certain baseline amount of sign-ups from among the hundreds of millions of people using other Google products. The real question is how many people are returning after creating their accounts, which Allen doesn't try to answer.
WEST CHESTER, Ohio ? For "Anybody but Romney" Republicans in a key conservative region of Ohio, Newt Gingrich has been picking up support as an alternative to the former Massachusetts governor.
The former House speaker has moved to the top in recent polling in Ohio, just as Republican presidential candidates prepare for the Jan. 3 caucuses in Iowa, followed closely by the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries. Ohio's presidential primary is scheduled for March 6, one of the biggest prizes for Republicans among about a dozen states voting on "Super Tuesday."
Mitt Romney hasn't excited some of the party's staunchest conservatives for reasons that include his past support of abortion rights and enactment of a Massachusetts health care plan that's often compared to President Barack Obama's overhaul.
Some conservatives had flirted with supporting Herman Cain, drawn to his business background and unconventional campaign style. But Cain suspended his campaign this month following allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior and a longtime extramarital affair. Cain's decision and Gingrich's performance in nationally televised debates helped some make up their minds.
"He's sold me," said Dan Keith, 61, of Hamilton. Keith and his wife, Pat, said they are convinced that Gingrich has the experience and savvy to be strong against Obama. "I can't see anybody else coming onto the scene that we would go to."
The Keiths said they were undecided when first interviewed three months ago.
"I think before, people liked the other candidates because they were an alternative to Romney. But I'm hearing more people who like Gingrich as Gingrich," said Bill Langdon, co-owner of the Grand Ole Pub, a popular gathering spot for Republican partisans in West Chester. Langdon had been interested in Cain, but doubted whether Cain could win the presidential nomination.
Gingrich is now his choice. "He's the guy they think can go toe-to-toe with the president," Langdon said.
Sandra Arno, of nearby Springdale, turned out for Cain's visit to West Chester in November and liked what she heard. She was deciding between him and Gingrich before Cain stopped campaigning, and most recently was leaning toward the former speaker.
"I think they're both very intelligent, and I think Newt will be good as the candidate," Arno said.
Republican-dominated suburbs like this one ? home of House Speaker John Boehner ? just north of Cincinnati provide a stronghold of votes in a state that no GOP nominee has ever reached the White House without winning. Their enthusiastic turnout to vote for George W. Bush by 2-to-1 margins in 2004 is credited with delivering Ohio to clinch his re-election. It's important for the Republican nominee to be able to attract big numbers in GOP-oriented suburban and rural regions to offset Democratic urban bastions led by Cleveland.
A series of Quinnipiac University polls tracked Gingrich's rise in Ohio from low single-digits to 36 percent between September and early December. Cain had fallen to 7 percent after leading the pack at 28 percent in October. The sexual harassment allegations against Cain surfaced in late October.
Lori Viars, a conservative activist and anti-abortion leader in Lebanon, predicted that a Romney nomination would keep some Christian evangelicals on the sidelines in November because of concern about his previous positions on issues, led by abortion. Some in her crowd ? Viars is among them ? might also hesitate over Gingrich's personal history, which includes two divorces and acknowledged marital infidelity.
"Newt makes a lot of sense," Viars said. "But everyone makes mistakes, and he certainly is right on a lot of issues."
Several of those who have come around to Gingrich say they're not put off by his personal past.
"Would I want him as marriage counselor? No," said Keith. "But that's not what we're electing."
Keith's wife thinks Gingrich's candidacy is on firmer ground because he's already undergone years of scrutiny.
"They've already raked him over the coals pretty good," Pat Keith said.
Other Republican activists say it's still too soon to pick a candidate in a state where there has been little campaigning, and with the GOP field likely to be smaller by the time of Ohio's primary in March.
This region of Ohio is home to some of the nation's first tea party groups, and a number of activists are loyal to Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who has attracted a band of followers with libertarian-minded calls to bring home U.S. troops and keep the government out of personal decisions.
Cincinnati tea party leader Mike Wilson, though, is "watching and waiting."
Wilson's favorite candidate was Tim Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor who dropped out in August. Wilson doesn't share the worry about Romney becoming the nominee. He also said a respectable Iowa finish by Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann or Texas Gov. Rick Perry could give either of those conservative favorites some traction heading into the contests that follow.
Wilson said Romney can defeat Obama and would work with a Republican-controlled House, should it stay in GOP hands.
"I think we know who the ultimate opponent is ? Barack Obama," Wilson said. "With John Boehner as speaker, I think Romney will sign a lot of Republican legislation over the next four years."

LONDON ? A teenager was fatally stabbed and a second man wounded in attacks on London's most famous retail street as thousands of shoppers flocked to Britain's capital seeking post-Christmas bargains.
The killing of the 18-year-old man on Oxford Street on Monday ? and a second wounding in the same road ? did little to deter shoppers crowding into neighboring stores in the landmark shopping district. Bargain hunters were also largely untroubled by a subway strike which badly disrupted the city's public transport services.
Selfridges ? close to the scene of Monday's stabbing and one of Britain's most popular department stores ? reported its biggest ever first hour of trading Monday morning, while the New West End Company, which represents traders on central London's shopping streets, reported 15 million pounds (US$23.5 million) in sales in the first three hours of trading.
Jace Tyrrell, of the New West End Company, said hundreds of thousands of people had visited central London retailers, despite action by police to cordon off parts of Oxford Street and temporarily close some stores after the attacks.
"These incidents are extremely rare on Oxford Street and we understand arrests have been made," she said. "The emergency services were quick to respond and have cordoned off the street as they continue with their investigations. We are working to ensure the street is open to businesses and shoppers tomorrow."
Tyrrell said shopkeepers had requested a meeting with police to discuss the incidents. "We understand both incidents involved gangs of youth who were known to each other (and) the police, and did not involve individual shoppers," she said.
London's air ambulance helicopter had earlier rushed to the street following the fatal stabbing.
Authorities said the teenage victim died before medics could administer help, while amateur video footage showed police struggling to part large crowds of shopper to allow emergency vehicles to reach the man.
Police erected a tent outside a Foot Locker sports store as they carried out investigations and confirmed that about ten people had been arrested in connection with the death.
Officers said a second stabbing took place close by ? on the corner of Oxford Street and Regent Street ? but insisted it wasn't immediately known if the two incidents were linked.
Det. Chief Insp. Mark Dunne, of London's Metropolitan police, said two groups of young people appeared to have become involved in a large-scale altercation before the teenager's death.
Dunne said that little more was known about the circumstances, but there were likely to be large numbers of witnesses. "This is probably the busiest place in the United Kingdom right now, on the busiest shopping day," he told reporters at the scene.
"A number of weapons have been recovered from that scene ? whether I have got the murder weapon I don't know. There's an assortment of items, but no guns," he said.
In the second attack, a 21-year-old man was stabbed in the leg and is being treated at a hospital for his wound.
Police said in a statement that three men had been arrested, but it was "too early to say whether this incident is linked to a fatal stabbing on Oxford Street."
On London's subway network, the ASLEF train drivers' labor union staged a one-day strike to demand extra pay and additional time off for members working on the public holiday.
Despite the disruptions, huge crowds ? some lining up outside stores from midnight ? rushed into department stores in London and other British cities as soon as doors opened early Monday.
The London Underground, the organization that manages the subway system, condemned the move, saying it was pointless and demonstrated "a complete disregard for our customers." Authorities said extra buses were running in main shopping areas to cater to the increased flow of travelers on one of the year's busiest shopping days.
The ASLEF union has warned it plans to stage three more strikes in January and February if the dispute is not resolved.
LANGSTON, Okla. (AP) - The interim president of Langston University says the death of former president Ernest Holloway is a dark day for the school and for the state of Oklahoma.
The 81-year-old Holloway died in Texas Saturday following a bout with stomach cancer.
Ponder said in a statement released Monday that Holloway was an outstanding educator who became legendary for his love of the school and his commitment to accessible education for all people.
Holloway served as president of Oklahoma's only historically black university for 25 years before retiring in 2005. He earned a bachelor's degree from Langston and served in various positions before being named president in 1979.

With record numbers of women in London turning to sex work to provide an income the English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP) has launched a new campaign to decriminalise prostitution for "safety's sake".
At an event at St Pauls "Tent City" a New Zealand MP Tim Barnett who sponsored the 2003 Prostitution Reform Act which decriminalised prostitution in New Zealand, explained how the change in the law in New Zealand has made it safer for sex workers to work. ?
New Zealand was the first country in the world to base a law on the demands of sex workers for health and safety concerns. After a five year review from the time the law was enacted, sex workers are safer and have more rights. The Association of Chief Police Officers is suggesting a New Zealand-style decriminalisation in the UK.
There are an estimated 35,000 sex workers in London according to research by The London Daily News.
