Online Bingo Games vs Traditional Bingo Games - Online Gaming

The fight is on. Between online bingo games and traditional bingo games that are played inside land-based bingo halls. But who will be the winner? Online bingo games? Or traditional bingo games? Well, read on to find it out!

?

Let's Get to the Ringside

?

To find out who will win the fight between online bingo games and traditional bingo games, let's get to the ringside and have a look at the fight that's on. Let's compare the strengths (features) possessed by these two giants.

?

Let's Compare the Availability

Traditional bingo games are not available round the clock. These games are played at specific times but not day and night. Online bingo games are available 24/7.

You can enjoy playing these wonderful games any time you like. I guess online bingo games win this comparison.

Let's Compare the Prizes

Traditional bingo games offer you decent prizes but online bingo games offer you prizes, bonuses, and certain other rewards that are not available in land-based bingo halls. For instance, you get bonus money on your deposits on most bingo websites. Plus, those websites award you special bingo bucks that you can use to play bingo games for free! Online bingo games unanimously win this comparison too.

Let's Compare the Ease of Use

Online bingo games are easy to play.

Everything is automatic. Your cards are evaluated automatically and when you win, the winnings are automatically credited to your bingo account. You don't need to attentively listen to the bingo caller or mark numbers off your cards or take your winning cards to the bingo caller or approach the bingo cashier to get your prizes! All these things are done automatically when you play online bingo games so these games score one more point.

Let's Compare the Fun Offered

The fun offered by the online bingo games is far better than what traditional bingo games have to offer. You can chat with your fellow players while playing online bingo. Even the chat hosts who run the show keep a smile on your face with their witty comments. Apart from that, when chat games are played, almost everyone participate in those games and the energy inside bingo rooms becomes electric!

?

So, the Winner Is...

?

It's unanimous. The winner is online bingo games! Without doubts traditional bingo games are no match for the online bingo games. If you long to win great rewards and experience the next level of entertainment, join a bingo website and play online bingo games! Have fun.

Pamela Hartigan: Inventing a New Future: Beyond Our Humpty Dumpty World

For the last few years since becoming director of the Skoll Centre, I have closed the Skoll World Forum with an Irish prayer. This year, I want to start my reflections with a riddle -- its origins of which I am not sure.

What is it that you keep forever when you give it away -- that changes as it moves from place to place -- and without which there is no past or future, no reason or meaning?

The answer? A story.

We are storytelling animals. Indeed many people believe that storytelling is what makes humans unique. We use stories to share our knowledge and experience, to learn from our past and to imagine our future. We only need to look at Nick Danzinger's wonderful work to see how true this is.

Oxford is a city of stories and those who have woven them -- Cornmarket Street in the city centre was the setting for the Crown Tavern where a young actor named Will Shakespeare grew rather too fond of his landlady. Sir Walter Raleigh learned his Latin at Oriel College, and the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins learned about beauty in Oxford's magnificent Baroque church. Oscar Wilde amused and amazed his examiners at the examinations schools where we will be tomorrow; and it was in Oxford one winter's night at 2 a.m. where J.R.R. Tolkien converted C.S. Lewis to Christianity. Oxford is the home of A.A. Milne whose characters including Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and Eeyore still live with me today, as does Kenneth Graham's story of Mr. Toad and his wild ride in The Wind in the Willows -- and while I haven't followed Alice down the rabbit hole, I have followed her into Christ Church and to the dining hall which much later became a film set for J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter.

Oxford's associations spill beyond literature into history and legend. For more than a thousand years the city has played a central role in England's history, as a home and inspiration to kings and politicians, saints and bishops, artists and academics, inventors and industrialists whose stories have helped to shape our world.

Having been part of the Oxford community for three years, I often wonder what story will be told in 2812 about our current time, when the University of Oxford will double its current 800 year-old existence.

I wonder what that story will say about this period of unparalleled difficulty for our planet and for the people it hosts. How will it capture our mood of foreboding that deep and complex forces are rapidly reshaping the world as we know it? How will the story describe the new global landscape now surfacing and the national and global institutional arrangements now emerging to replace those that are proving to be inadequate to deal with the deepest problems we confront?

Currently, we are living in a Humpty Dumpty world where a good many of the king's horses and the king's men are scrambling to put Humpty together again -- while a growing movement of men and women with imagination, commitment, persistence and strong ethical fiber -- people such as each one of you gathered here for the Skoll World Forum -- are working furiously to ensure that the Humpty Dumpty model is transformed and replaced with pathways that achieve economic and social justice and arrest the destruction of our planet. We are in an interesting phase of new thinking and experimentation, and we must seize this hugely important opportunity.

Like most of you here, I am an optimist. I cannot imagine that our story will not have a happy ending, even while at times a happy ending seems to be a pipe dream.

Let's just review the stories that grabbed our attention in 2011. The year started with natural disasters including the earthquake off Japan that caused its tsunamis and nuclear disaster. In August, Hurricane Irene ripped through the Caribbean and along the east coast of the U.S., and with this storm system came the floods responsible for the deadliest U.S. tornado season since 1936. Then, in September, another earthquake struck Van in eastern Turkey killing 600 and leaving 60,000 homeless. And no one tuning into CNN or the BBC could escape the scenes of the monsoons that raged across Asia between June and November, killing untold thousands in Pakistan, Burma, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. Typhoons battered the Philippines and Indonesia and few in Asia, including China, escaped the deluge crisis of this past year.

Moving on, the global financial crisis assumed urgent momentum in 2011. The stock market recovery of late 2010 and early 2011 was ephemeral, as many expected. The financial crisis took a definitive step as world markets plunged and as the sovereign debt crisis spread from peripheral states into the heart of Europe. The U.S. lost its AAA rating for the first time in history. In Europe, the tragicomedy of the DSK sex scandal was forgotten as the debt crisis spiraled. As, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and others have struggled to implement the austerity measures needed to refinance their debt -- the grand European project has teetered.

Meanwhile, the enormous levels of additional debt that the U.S. has taken on since the start of the crisis have been sustainable only because so much of China's foreign reserves are locked in to the dollar. Borrowing your way out of debt, as advocated by Keynesian solutions, works only if the present generation can pass its borrowings onto the next one. But with the aging of the developed world, the next generation will be smaller than the last, while the cost of energy and other commodities all continue to rise as emerging countries industrialize.

Add to this Iran's putative nuclear program, a world population that reached 7 billion, rampant inflation, food riots and a climate catastrophe.

This litany of gloomy stories is enough to give any Pollyanna pause for thought. Yet as described in Stumbling on Happiness by Harvard professor Daniel Gilbert, research in cognitive functioning find that human beings reinterpret negative things in a more positive light -- the "every cloud has a silver lining" idea.

My hope for the future springs from past and current personal experience. I was a university student in the late '60s, early '70s when ordinary citizens constituted the core of the anti-war movement and the civil rights movement. Globally, it was ordinary citizens who challenged the Chinese Communist system in Tiananmen Square, the apartheid structure in South Africa, and led the anti-nuclear movement, the environmental movement, the women's movement, and so on.

This past year, citizens' movements have risen to new heights in shaking the status quo, propelled by the newest technologies that connect them to one another around the world. In 2011, we saw people -- primarily young people -- take to the streets. The deeply democratic nature of the uprisings caught mainstream media and all of us by surprise as youth in the Middle East and North Africa rose up to demand freedom of expression and opportunities. Starting in Tunisia, the spark spread to Algeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Libya, toppling long entrenched tyrants.

The movement spread to Europe where tens of thousands marched to express their frustration with the lack of employment, of opportunities, and of politicians who didn't seem to care, from "Los Indignados" or "the Outraged" in Spain, to Greece and then to the USA with the Occupy Wall Street movement and to the UK and the crowds gathered at St. Paul's in London. More recently, thousands in Moscow have taken on the Putin regime demanding the same things as protesters worldwide -- a systemic change that will provide greater dignity, transparency, participation and access to opportunities.

This movement of people worldwide is perhaps the most exciting global phenomenon of our time. It is our promise that we will not put Humpty Dumpty together again as before -- and for me, this is where entrepreneurial approaches to social change come in. These new approaches are the harbingers of the types of organizational and business models that our compartmentalized world so desperately needs in order to integrate where we make our money and where we do good, tear down the firewalls between our personal and professional lives, and reap the true value we all should be making to the world.

In sum, I am optimistic for many reasons, but mainly because for most of my life, I have hung out with creative and positive people who, regardless of their backgrounds and their resources, manage to punch way above their weight. So when one is surrounded by men and women with a "can do" attitude, an infectious energy, and an ability to see opportunities for innovation and transformation at every turn, it is pretty hard to be gloomy about the state of the world. Entrepreneurship of this sort is highly contagious.

I now work primarily with university and graduate students -- they are full of hope that they will find careers where they can contribute their business savvy and other talents to improve human welfare. They don't want to wait until they are 50 years old to "give back." Some are entrepreneurs themselves while others -- like young adults everywhere -- seek to contribute to endeavors that are fundamentally innovative, philosophically positive and morally compelling.

So how do we rewire our systems, our practices and our mindsets so our story reflects greater convergence rather than fragmentation of effort? That, for me is the great challenge before us, no matter where our life journey takes us. In that sense, the global movement of outrage on the part of ordinary citizens against an increasingly unfair and unsustainable society -- joined up with practical, creative and committed social entrepreneurs -- will ensure that Humpty Dumpty is not recreated -- and that when my story, your story, our collective story is told, it will be about depicting the triumph that occurs when human ingenuity, empathy and integrity rise to dominance together to address unprecedented threats.

Thank you.

Home Improvement ? Electrical and Mechanical Safety Issues ...

If you have ever hurt yourself while working on home improvement projects, then you know the hard lesson. You are fortunate because many people are killed every year working on their homes. The most common type of accident involves falling down, or falling off of something. Roof top injuries are very common, especially for those that are amateurs at fixing their own homes.

Another very common accident involves the use of ladders. Most often, people are not setting the ladder up right or decide to reach for something which causes them to fall over. By utilizing these basic safety precautions, you will have fewer accident when working on any home-improvement project.

Everyone has household chores to take care of. It makes it so much easier if you always have the right tool for the job. Don?t practice ?false economy? by buying cheap tools. They will only cause you problems and will have to be replaced frequently. Their cost, down the road, could even be more than a good tool would cost at the outset. Breakage can be a real problem when you purchase cheap tools. And this is just one of the disadvantages you can incur. One of the most important steps when you finish using your tools is to protect them from dampness. It?s important that you don?t let moisture and dirt cause your tools to become rusty or gunked up. Most tools can be cleaned up and protected by wiping them down with an oily rag that has been sprinkled with a light viscosity oil. Keep a rag like this handy in your tool box. If you keep an ?oil rag? handy in your tool box, you can wipe any oil residue off before you begin. If your home improvement project includes a lot of repainting, it will save you hours of time if you rent a small scaffold system. This is especially helpful if you have to do a lot of painting on your ceilings. If you aren?t sure about renting scaffolding, simply use a ladder to repaint a ceiling and you will quickly see the benefits of a scaffold system. You will quickly agree it was money well-spent to rent a portable, home scaffold unit after you have finished painting several rooms. When working from a scaffold, you will be able to access and paint large portions of your ceilings without moving the unit. Plus, many of them have castor wheels for easy moving around. So make it a point to find a scaffold unit to rent that includes castor wheels. It will make your job much easier.

Going back to the topic of ladders, you must always use safety and common sense. The best thing to do is have someone working with you to spot you while you climb. Your helper should do their best you and the ladder from falling. Very often people will tip the ladder because they lean too far to one side. You have to think in terms of center of gravity at all times.

If you feel that the ladder is not in a good position, get down and move it. Remember that each place that you work with the ladder can be different. And finally, if working near a door, always alert those that you are on the other side.

Home improvement projects can provide extensive rewards and satisfaction. For example, if you build a home entertainment center yourself, you can relax and show it off to everyone, basking in the glory of your success. Taking safety precautions, though, is essential to avoid injury.

Great Books for Horse Lovers: Step Up and Step Out with Horses for ...

For 67 years, the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show has drawn equestrian legends from across America and around the world to compete in Houston and raise money for local charities. This year, Pin Oak's two-week-long equi-spectacular benefits the Texas Children's Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House, and the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance. However, in continuing to step up and step out for children, the members of this top ten horse show have also extended the events beyond the arenas, beyond the showgrounds, and into the community. That gives everyone a chance to make a difference at Pin Oak, including me - and you! This winter, I was honored to learn that Pin Oak had selected? The Literary Horse: When Legends Come to Life Exhibit?to be one of their main community events,?presented "to inspire reading through the majesty of the horse." A fifty piece exhibit at the Houston Public Library and a fourteen piece exhibit at the Texas Children's Hospital Main and West Campus Libraries opened on February 18th and will be on display through the show's conclusion - with books, movies, and other media from and beyond the exhibit?available for visitors to borrow and trot on home!

Last week, I also had the pleasure of trotting on down to Houston to participate in some of the show's exciting events. I photographed riders and horses who have helped make the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show possible, including Lynn Walsh and the Periwen family, as well as children who were visited at the Ronald McDonald House by Kay O'Conner and the ponies of Personal Ponies of Louisiana, and the Texas Children's Hospital by Jim Wenman and Carla Erickson and their horses, Shadow and Thor. I had the privilege of reading horse stories to patient-families at the Ronald McDonald House and the Texas Children's Hospital, lending a helping hoof during Pin Oak's Education Days, and teaching classes on creative writing about pets, horses, and wildlife at the Houston Public Library, too.

It was all-out gallop of a trip, but they were some the most inspiring and energizing days I've ever had. Pin Oak captures and shares the blue-ribbon purpose of great stories and time spent with horses: to "place hope in the hands and hearts of children."

You can be part of the Pin Oak story, too. Attend the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show at the Great Southwest in Katy, Texas, which runs through March 31st, and browse their website to find out how you can contribute to the Pin Oak community. And of course, don't forget to visit The Literary Horse Exhibit at the Houston Public Library and take out books to share with, inspire, and delight your favorite kids!

Exclusive: China Communist Party scandal triggered by British man's death: source

BEIJING (Reuters) - The scandal shaking China's ruling Communist Party just as it readies for leadership change was triggered by claims that the wife of one ambitious candidate was involved in the death of a British businessman, said a source with close ties to key individuals involved.

The comments, corroborated by two other sources who also spoke on condition of anonymity, are the first direct account of events which eventually led to this month's downfall of Chongqing mega-city chief Bo Xilai who had very publicly bid for a place in the Party's inner circle later this year.

The source, citing accounts coming from an unfinished central investigation, said it was unclear how much truth there was to the claim by Bo's former police chief, Wang Lijun, but he told Reuters he had "no doubt" that Wang had raised it with Bo.

Wang told Bo in late January that he believed Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was involved in the death of British businessman Neil Heywood in the southwest Chinese city in mid-November, the source said.

The account helps explain the apparent rupture between the city chief and Wang, who led Bo's widely applauded crackdown on crime in China's most populous metropolis.

In early February, Wang briefly sought refuge in the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, several hours' drive from Chongqing, which suddenly made the growing scandal public.

Bo, 62, and his wife have disappeared from public view since his abrupt removal on March 15 as party chief of Chongqing, and they cannot respond publicly to the rumors and reports. Nor can Wang, who is under investigation.

The Chongqing government has not answered repeated phone calls and faxed questions from Reuters about the circumstances of Bo's downfall and Heywood's death. The central government has said the results of its investigation into Wang's flight to the consulate will be released, but to date it has not offered a detailed account.

BO SCORNS ACCUSATIONS

The Foreign Ministry has also not answered questions about Heywood, with a spokesman saying that he had no information.

In a news conference days before his dismissal, Bo scorned as nonsense unspecified accusations of misdeeds by his wife and said some people were pouring "filth on my family". Gu was formerly a high-powered lawyer.

"Wang Lijun has told central investigators that Gu Kailai turned on the British man because of economic interests and that she wanted to destroy him (Heywood)," said the source, who is generally sympathetic to Bo.

Beijing- and London-based relatives of Heywood told Reuters in separate interviews that they did not suspect foul play in his death. They both spoke on condition of anonymity.

"It's preposterous. The more description (in the media), the darker it becomes," the family member said, occasionally breaking into tears in an interview in the lobby lounge of a hotel on the outskirts of Beijing late on Thursday.

The family denied reports that Heywood was a spy and that he was cremated against their wishes.

"We requested the cremation. We were not forced to do so. We have no doubts about the police report," said one family member.

The British Embassy in Beijing has asked the Chinese government to reinvestigate his death, attributed by Chongqing police to cardiac arrest due to over-consumption of alcohol.

Heywood, 41, was not a heavy drinker, but was a chain smoker. His father, Peter, also died of a heart attack after drinks over dinner at his London home in 2004 at age 63, the family members said.

Bo's dismissal has also raised questions over whether China's leaders will start to attack his popular "Chongqing model" that he said promoted more equitable development in the world's second biggest economy but where much of the population still struggles to make a living.

"The split in the public reflects rifts among leaders over views of Chongqing," said the source.

"Bo Xilai was a bold experimenter who was like a catfish stirring up China's stagnant political pond. His enemies couldn't catch him until now," said the source, who knows Bo and his family and has close ties to other senior leaders.

He said that according to Wang, Gu believed Heywood had abused or taken Bo family funds to which the Briton might have had access. Heywood's family members said he had no business dealings with the Bos.

CONFRONTATION

The source's account of Wang Lijun's accusations tallies with details that have emerged about the drama that unfolded before he took flight to the U.S. consulate in Chengdu, where he stayed for 24 hours before officials coaxed him out.

The emerging accounts help explain why central leaders decided to risk the aftershocks triggered by unseating Bo, an ex-commerce minister known both for revolutionary style populism and for his courting of multinationals.

By the time Wang arrived at the U.S. consulate, his relationship with his long-time patron, Bo, had already curdled into mutual distrust, said the source.

According to the source and previous accounts reported by Reuters, Wang feared that Bo, eager to preserve his reputation and chances for a spot in the next central leadership, could turn on him after central party investigators began probing Wang's past.

About a week before his flight to the consulate, Wang told Bo about his suspicions about the death of Heywood, a business consultant who was instrumental in Bo's son attending Harrow, an exclusive private school in England.

Heywood knew the Bo family from the time when he lived in China's northeastern port city of Dalian, where Bo was mayor from 1993 to 2000.

"(Wang) told Bo that the problem couldn't be covered up," said the source.

Bo was outraged, said the source, who has met both men. Days later, Bo demoted Wang to the much less powerful role of vice mayor for education, culture and science.

Bo initially tried to muffle the allegations, but the former police chief's flight to the consulate brought the rupture between the men into the open, said the source.

Even if Wang's suspicions over Heywood's death prove unfounded, Bo's initial failure to report the case could end his political career, said the source.

"In the central leadership's view, that was too late. They said he should have reported the problem as soon as Wang Lijun raised allegations about Gu Kailai."

Is Hollie Cavanagh the Next Carrie Underwood?

The American Idol finalists did not make things easy on themselves last night.

Joshua Ledet covered Mariah Carey. Elise Testone tackled Led Zepplin. And Hollie Cavanagh dared to make the mistake that has haunted many contestants before her: she took on a single by an Idol icon; in this case "Jesus Take the Wheel" by Carrie Underwood.

Cavanagh definitely has the chops to pull off the track, but it's impossible not to compare her to Underwood - the most successful competitor in the show's history - when watching/listening to the performance. Did Hollie do Carrie proud? Could you see her following in Underwood's enormously impressive footsteps?

Judge for yourself:

Getting It All Done?with an HR Dept of One ? Human Resources ...

Carol Kardas, president, KardasLarson LLC

(March 29, 2012) HR professionals try to do it all ? fight fires, educate senior managers, serve as an employee liaison? with limited resources. But when you are the HR department, how do you handle responsibilities often reserved for an entire staff?

According to Carol Kardas, president of KardasLarson, LLC and speaker at CBIA?s Annual HR Conference, accepting your limitations is one key to solo HR success.

?As HR folks, we want everything to be 100% correct,? she said. ?Ninety-nine percent is sometimes good enough. Give yourself permission that 99% is sometimes ok. You can?t do it all.?

What Does the C-Suite Want?

But what can you do to make sure management views you as a strategic partner, not just an overworked administrator? By understanding what they really want:

  • Develop business and financial acumen: Understand how your business makes money.
  • Understand your company?s market: Learn about where your company does business and who its customers are.
  • Follow economic/competitive trends: Keep up with economic forecasts, 401(k) trends, etc.
  • Develop HR metrics: Demonstrate how you contribute to your company?s bottom line by measuring turnover ratio, expense and risk reduction, etc.
  • Offer insights and solutions: Bring solutions, not problems to management.
  • Master your profession: Stay up to date on HR trends and practices. Earn certifications.
  • Maintain your resources: Network, join local HR associations, use outside resources like CBIA and the Society for Human Resource Management.

Organizational Tips for HR Success

Kardas also offered this advice:

  • Multitask: Prioritize your projects. Determine what you can let go or postpone.
  • Be fair across the board. Make rules for the many, not for one.
  • Be credible and efficient: Tell people exactly how much time you need to complete an assignment and give yourself enough time to do it. Don?t overpromise.
  • Conduct an HR audit: Investigate your organizations current practices, policies, and procedures. Review benefits, compensation, legal compliance, personnel files, etc.
  • Get to know your managers: Learn their hot button issues, attend their department meetings, shadow employees to understand their jobs.

?Social Media Challenges??

?Every HR practitioner, no matter how big your department, must also understand the impact of new technology?particularly social media?on the workplace. A keen sense of your employees? rights regarding what they can say and where they can say it is essential, as is keeping abreast of ongoing legal developments.??

??We?re in our infancy of developing real law on what [activities are] protected and what?s concerted,? Patrick McHale, partner at Kainen, Escalara & McHale PC, told conference attendees. ?At what point do comments about [your] business cross the line when they?re made for millions to see? We don?t know.???

?According to Jonathan Kreisberg, Regional Director, Region 34, for the National Labor Relations Board, his organization and its general counsel compare conversations posted on Facebook to those that (used to) take place around the office water cooler.??

???Employees can sit around the water cooler and have conversations about their work,? he said. ?Having a conversation on Facebook doesn?t change that. We?re going to see how far that concept is taken, but for now, that?s the way we?re looking at it.???

?Practical Suggestions from the Experts??

The lawyers concluded with these additional social media tips:?

  • Think through the purpose of your policy and what it?s trying to accomplish. Avoid using overly broad language?the employees won?t understand what behavior is expected of them and courts often find overly broad provisions illegal.
  • Follow guidance from the NLRB. Don?t give employees room to file suit and help shape new laws.
  • Don?t ignore comments about your business posted to social media. Instead, use them to create a dialogue about problems in the workplace.

Business jet with satellite communications equipment - All VoIP News

When it comes time to equip a business jet with satellite communications equipment, the choices can be confusing. A company like service provider Satcom1, but, offers simple solutions that clarify the choices.

The AEA show yesterday

At the AEA show yesterday, Aircell unveiled upcoming voice capability for its Gogo Biz airborne broadband Internet system.

TrueNorth Avionics, LiveTV Airfone and Satcom Direct are teaming to develop and market a at once-generation Magnastar air-to-ground communications system that will provide voice, Wi-Fi Internet and e-mail, text messaging and multichannel VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services to business jet operators.

EMS Aviation, a division of EMS Technologies, recently completed installation of an advanced voice-over-Internet-protocol service in a Middle East head-of-state Airbus A320. EMS teamed with Paris-based Eclipse, an Inmarsat service provider and avionics dealer, to implement the secure, end-to-end package, which the company claims is the first of its kind on an A320.

Dassault Falcon has delivered a Falcon 7X with Honeywell's MCS 7120 SwiftBroadband satcom system as part of an installation that brings cabin Wi-Fi and VoIP capabilities to the French trijet. Dassault said the installation is the first in a business jet capable of providing "fully managed" VoIP phone services in flight.

Following supplementary type certification of its Simphone OpenCabin airborne telecommunications system for Bombardier's Global business jet line, TrueNorth Avionics says it is experiencing a run of orders and installations for its software-centric packages.

This year manufacturers brought to market a number of electronics calculated to bring a smile to the face of even the most jaded business jet owner.

Successful launch

Following a successful launch and glowing reviews of its GoGo in-flight Internet service with the airlines in late summer, Aircell was at the NBAA Convention in October promoting the broadband service to the business aviation market and now says it will be available this spring.

Thrane & Thrane introduced an Iridium satcom system filter to eliminate the effects an Inmarsat satcom system might have on an Iridium system installed in the same aircraft. It will enable the simultaneous use of Inmarsat and Iridium voice/data communication systems.

The first RCOM-100 satphone equipment

Deliveries of the first RCOM-100 satphone equipment, designed for use with the Globalstar Satellite system, will begin this November, Arnav Systems announced at NBAA 2002. As detailed at the Puyallup, Wash. company's exhibit (Booth No.

It's enough sand to bury Manhattan...

A giant mass of sand large enough to bury all of Manhattan under dunes more than 50 stories tall apparently erupted from the floor of the North Sea hundreds of thousands of years ago, the largest such body of sand ever found in the world, researchers say.

Scientists used 3-D seismic data and samples drilled from the ocean bottom during fossil fuel exploration to analyze a huge body of sand that lies over an oil field in the North Sea. Their research suggested it was "extrusive," spewed out from fissures in the seafloor likely over the course of years sometime between 400,000 and 2.6 million years ago.

At 2.4 cubic miles (10 cubic kilometers) in size, this is apparently the largest extrusive body of sand ever discovered. This is big enough to bury Manhattan's 23 square miles (60 square kilometers) under 525 feet (160 meters) of sand, or the whole of London's 610 square miles (1,579 sq km) under 20 feet (6 m) of sand.

"Most exciting is discovering things for the first time and realizing that you have discovered something new," researcher Helge Loseth, a geologist at the Statoil Research Center in Trondheim, Norway, told OurAmazingPlanet.

Currently, the sand covers an area of more than 100 square miles (260 sq km) and is up to 410 feet (125 m) thick. It lies buried under about 2,300 feet (700 m) of sediment that accumulated on top of it after its deposition, with at least another 1,640 feet (500 m) of the North Sea above that.

    1. Scientists take a look inside a jury's brains

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Jurors show a characteristic pattern of brain activity when they decide to be lenient on a criminal, and the strength of that pattern can vary from juror to juror, researchers say.

    2. 'Invisibility cloak' can serve as heat shield
    3. Dolphin society adopts freewheeling lifestyle
    4. Ancient stone monolith likely marked seasons

Loseth explained that under the surface of the seafloor, porous sands are covered with impermeable clays. The water pressure between the sand grains can increase enough to fracture the overlying clays, and this pressurized sandy water will then erupt upward.

"This is similar to when you increase the water pressure in one end of your garden hose by turning the tap," Loseth said.

Aside from being interesting for its size, this body of sand might have economic value as well. The pores between sand grains are normally filled with water, but hydrocarbons such as oil or gas can migrate into these pores instead.

"Such big sands are so large that they can contain economically interesting volumes of hydrocarbons," Loseth said. "Today, at the depth they are placed in the North Sea, they may also be interesting for carbon dioxide storage."

Loseth and his colleagues Nuno Rodrigues and Peter Cobbold detailed their findings online March 19 in the journal Geology.

Mumbai, Miami on list for big weather disasters

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Global warming is leading to such severe storms, droughts and heat waves that nations should prepare for an unprecedented onslaught of deadly and costly weather disasters, an international panel of climate scientists says in a report issued Wednesday.

The greatest danger from extreme weather is in highly populated, poor regions of the world, the report warns, but no corner of the globe ? from Mumbai to Miami ? is immune. The document by a Nobel Prize-winning panel of climate scientists forecasts stronger tropical cyclones and more frequent heat waves, deluges and droughts.

The 594-page report blames the scale of recent and future disasters on a combination of man-made climate change, population shifts and poverty.

In the past, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, founded in 1988 by the United Nations, has focused on the slow inexorable rise of temperatures and oceans as part of global warming. This report by the panel is the first to look at the less common but far more noticeable extreme weather changes, which recently have been costing on average about $80 billion a year in damage.

"We mostly experience weather and climate through the extreme," said Stanford University climate scientist Chris Field, who is one of the report's top editors. "That's where we have the losses. That's where we have the insurance payments. That's where things have the potential to fall apart.

"There are lots of places that are already marginal for one reason or another," Field said. But it's not just poor areas: "There is disaster risk almost everywhere."

The scientists say that some places, particularly parts of Mumbai in India, could become uninhabitable from floods, storms and rising seas. In 2005, over 24 hours nearly 3 feet of rain fell on the city, killing more than 1,000 people and causing massive damage. Roughly 2.7 million people live in areas at risk of flooding.

Other cities at lesser risk include Miami, Shanghai, Bangkok, China's Guangzhou, Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City, Myanmar's Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) and India's Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta). The people of small island nations, such as the Maldives, may also need to abandon their homes because of rising seas and fierce storms.

"The decision about whether or not to move is achingly difficult and I think it's one that the world community will have to face with increasing frequency in the future," Field said in a telephone news conference Wednesday.

This report ? the summary of which was issued in November ? is unique because it emphasizes managing risks and how taking precautions can work, Field said. In fact, the panel's report uses the word "risk" 4,387 times.

Field pointed to storm-and-flood-prone Bangladesh, an impoverished country that has learned from its past disasters. In 1970, a Category 3 tropical cyclone named Bhola killed more than 300,000 people. In 2007, a stronger cyclone killed only 4,200 people. Despite the loss of life, the country is considered a success story because it was better prepared and invested in warning and disaster prevention, Field said.

A country that was not as prepared, Myanmar, was hit with a similar sized storm in 2008, which killed 138,000 people.

The study says forecasts that some tropical cyclones ? which includes hurricanes in the United States ? will be stronger because of global warming, but the number of storms should not increase and may drop slightly.

Some other specific changes in severe weather that the scientists said they had the most confidence in predicting include more heat waves and record hot temperatures worldwide, increased downpours in Alaska, Canada, northern and central Europe, East Africa and north Asia,

IPCC Chairman Rajendra Pachauri told The Associated Press that while all countries are getting hurt by increased climate extremes, the overwhelming majority of deaths are happening in poorer less developed places. That, combined with the fact that richer countries are generating more greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels, makes the issue of weather extremes one of fairness.

However, extremes aren't always deadly. Sometimes, they are just strange.

Study co-author David Easterling of the National Climatic Data Center says this month's heat wave, while not deadly, fits the pattern of worsening extremes. The U.S. has set nearly 6,800 high temperature records in March. Last year, the United States set a record for billion-dollar weather disasters, though many were tornadoes, which can't be linked to global warming.

"When you start putting all these events together, the insurance claims, it's just amazing," Easterling said. "It's pretty hard to deny the fact that there's got to be some climate signal."

Northeastern University engineering and environment professor Auroop Ganguly, who didn't take part in writing the IPCC report, praised it and said the extreme weather it highlights "is one of the major and important types of what we would call 'global weirding.'" It's a phrase that some experts have been starting to use more to describe climate extremes.

Importance of Home Security Systems

Home security systems are very effective, in order to safeguard our valuable assets. Each and everyday the newspapers carry news of burglary in the neighborhood. These home security measures if properly followed will minimize the type of burglaries as well as theft which happens as a result of carelessness and inadequacy of security.

Each and everyone in the world loves the home they live. It may be either rented or own home. As we all need to live a sophisticated life, our homes will be filled up by valuable modern gadgets. Now-a-days no one can live without a television, refrigerator, computers, inverters, washing machines and so on. All these electronic gadgets have almost become a part of our life.

We take care of belongings when we are present in our home. There is always a possibility of theft and burglary in our absence. On account of protecting ourselves against this type of attacks from burglars, robbers, the home security systems lend a helping hand.

There are so many security systems employed for this specific purpose. As it comes to home, the primary issues which have to be focused on are the doors, window panels and locks. By employing a strong and heavy door with a double lock, and using perfect locks the chance of burglary can be minimized. For real safety, the moment we plan to leave the home, information provided to the police station near by can be a good move.

Despite switching of all lights, keep some lights alive, so that the movement inside the house can be well noticed. Installing a burglar alarm would be a wise option, but for its cost, could be very useful in the industries and commercial companies.

3D Sun (for iPad)

What with recent headlines about solar flares, coronal mass ejections, geomagnetic storms, and spectacular auroral displays, many people have been wondering what the heck is going on with the Sun. 3D Sun, a free app for iPhone and iPad, provides answers in semi-regular updates on the state of the Sun, replete with dazzling images and/or videos.

The app is the brainchild of Tony Phillips, Ph.D., an astrophysicist who writes the Spaceweather. website, a key resource on solar activity and its effects on Earth. Released in February 2010, 3D Sun has only increased in its importance as the sunspot cycle nears its peak; ?solar max? is expected in about a year.

I chose to review the iPad version (which I tested on an iPad 2) as it best shows off the app?s stunning visuals, but most of what I write here applies to the iPhone version as well. The one difference I noticed between the versions is in the organization of content. The iPad version has four tabs along the bottom: SDO Gallery; 3D Sun; News; and Help. The iPhone adds a fifth tab, Conditions, in which current solar-terrestrial conditions are shown; in the iPad, Current Conditions are displayed under the News tab.

Gorgeous Imagery?

True to its name, 3D Sun provides three-dimensional images of the Sun in each of 4 different wavelengths, courtesy of NASA?s twin STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) spacecraft, currently on opposite sides of the Sun from each other. Multiple images are combined to form a rotating solar globe, with the bright active regions around sunspots marked. Representations of the two STEREO spacecraft in their current positions relative to the Sun are also shown.

The SDO Gallery tab contains 9 different images and videos taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which was launched in early 2010. SDO takes ultra-high resolution images of the Sun in every second, so they can be combined to make videos. All of the images in the gallery, however, are from the spacecraft?s first couple of months of operation. Although all are spectacular, as far as I can tell, they don?t ever seem to be updated. The site does provide a link to the SDO web site, which has more extensive galleries and information, but one has to be online to access it.

All the Sun News that's Fit to Print

The News tab provides bulletins of noteworthy events related to the Sun: flares, auroras, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), geomagnetic storms, eclipses?even comets that stray too close to our star. They?re accompanied by images or video (usually spectacular), in some cases even audio files (for instance, of radio noise accompanying a solar flare). Each news item has buttons for Twitter, Facebook, and Email, so you can share the content from within the app. The news items try to put solar events into perspective; for example, one describing an ongoing S3-class solar radiation storm noted ??Such a storm is mainly a nuisance to satellites, causing occasional reboots of onboard computers and adding noise to imaging systems?.?

The Help tab provides a brief glossary of solar science terms, particularly ones relevant to the app: Auroras; Coronal Hole, Geomagnetic Storm; STEREO; Yellow/Blue/Green/Red Sun. (The last ones refer to the false-color images in different wavelengths depicted in the 3D Sun rotating globe.) Missing, though, are many basic terms: corona, solar wind, sunspot, sunspot cycle, prominence, filament, active region, let alone terms like the K Index mentioned in the Current Conditions reports.

No Sun Primer

This brings to light the main thing I felt was missing from this app: A primer on solar dynamics, giving a user new to the subject some background on solar magnetism, sunspots and the sunspot cycle, and the conditions under which solar flares and CMEs form, as well as how radiation and particles from these events interact with Earth?s atmosphere and magnetic field. The news items are well written and contain some of this information, especially as it relates to geomagnetic storms, but it would be nice to have it all in one place for a newcomer to refer to.

Nonetheless, this free app is informative and visually stunning, containing useful information and great graphics of our star and the flares, CMEs, auroras, and other phenomena that it spawns. The current solar cycle is slowly approaching its peak, so 3D Sun?s time has come. Though the app is best for amateur astronomers with some knowledge of solar phenomena, it contains much that should be of interest to anyone curious about our star?it?s worth putting on your iPad for the spectacular photos and videos alone.?
