Do liquid diets work? - NutriAnswers.com

Promising rapid and easy weight loss, diet shakes?sometimes called meal replacement shakes or MRPs for short?are a popular form of weight control. There are a number of manufacturers offering a wide variety of shakes in a host of flavors to suit almost every taste. Diet shakes are supplied in dry form to be mixed with water and some manufacturers also produce ready to drink versions that are packaged in single-serving carton s and/or cans.

Advantages
Diet shakes offer a very convenient type of weight loss diet. There is no need to prepare special meals, weigh and measure your portions or spend time cooking low-calorie meals. The shakes are designed to be nutritionally balanced, fortified with essential vitamins and minerals and have been weighed, measured and nutritionally analyzed to save you having to perform any complicated calculations.

How they work
To lose weight using diet shakes, simply replace some of your regular meals with shakes. You can replace as many meals per day as you wish but most manufacturers usually encourage you to eat at least one solid food meal per day. Most shakes contain an average of 250 to 300 calories per serving so by eliminating high-calorie meals and replacing them with low calorie shakes you reduce your average daily calorific intake. This will create an energy shortfall which will be met by an increase in fat metabolism leading to weigh loss.

Typical Nutritional Content
Although there are a wide variety of diet shakes available, most shakes provide similar levels of nutrition. Diet shakes normally contain protein for muscle growth and repair plus carbohydrates for energy. Diet shakes are generally low fat but often contain monounsaturated oils as these are very healthful. Many shakes include soluble and insoluble fiber which is filling; good for your digestive system and helps regulate blood glucose levels by slowing the emptying of your stomach contents into your small intestines. Some shakes contain artificial sweeteners, colors and/or flavors but these are best avoided if possible as some people are sensitive to these ingredients.

Disadvantages
Although diet shakes usually result in rapid weight loss, there are a number of disadvantages associated with this type of restrictive eating plan. Replacing meals with diet shakes can result in social exclusion at family meal times which can be stressful and may affect your compliance. Using diet shakes does not teach portion control or healthy food selection. Subsequently it is not uncommon for dieters to regain their lost weight when they return to their regular pattern of eating.? Drinking diet shakes may become repetitive and/or boring which may limit your compliance.

Considerations
Diet shakes fall into the category of very low calorie diets. Very low calorie diets promote rapid weight loss but can also leave you feeling hungry, tired and nauseous. Some dieters also report headaches, difficulty concentrating and digestive upsets. Seek medical advice before starting any severely restrictive diet especially if you have any serious underlying medical condition such as coronary heart disease or diabetes.

Business Advertising Directories ? SMB Advice & Tips

Online business advertising directories are an essential part of building and maintaining your small business? online presence. Not only do these directories help increase exposure, business directories can add relevancy to your site which is vital for search engine ranking.

There is a wide range of online advertising directories. Some offer free submissions, others charge fees. Some are designed as general directories; others are industry or location specific. A concentrated effort to list your business in multiple directories is a low cost way to gain online exposure.

The advantages of listing your business in as many directories as possible go beyond increased exposure to potential customers. Incoming links to your web site are of critical importance when it comes to search engine rankings. Search engines, like Google, place significant emphasis on link popularity, or the number of outside links pointing to your web site. Business directory listings play an important role in increasing incoming links.

Many directory listings allow customers to rate and review their experiences with your business. While this can be a two-edged sword, positive reviews and comments can greatly increase your customer base. If someone posts a negative experience, most directory sites allow a rebuttal, giving you the perfect opportunity to regain goodwill, address the submitters issue, and show other potential customers that you are committed to quality and customer satisfaction.

Of course, increased exposure is one of the main advantages of using a variety of business directories. It stands to reason that the more directories in which your business listing appears, the more people will be drawn to your web site.

There are three main types of business directories. They are:

GeneralRegionalIndustry Specific

General business advertising directories list businesses in all industries, specializations, and regions. Most general business directories offer free listings and differing levels of more prominent sponsored listing options. Examples of general business advertising directories include:

Business.com ? Business.com is a general business site dedicated to providing business information, how-to articles, directories, and additional resources. Directories match customers with needed services and products. Free listings, pay-per-click, and banner advertising levels are available.

RichDir.com ? Rich?s business directories provide a wealth of business information as well as business listings. Listings are submitted by business owners and reviewed for acceptance. Premium listings are available.

Best of the Web ? Best of the Web is one of the oldest directory sites. Not a business specific direction, they feature general, blog, and local directories, business owners may create their own listing, upload photos, and take advantage of a free get started option.

DMOZ ? DMOZ, or the Open Directory Project, is a large, comprehensive, human-edited web directory. A global community of volunteers maintains and constructs the directories. All listings, including those for business, are free.

Regional directories list businesses in specific geographical locations. Most regional directories break local businesses into industry categories and encourage customer reviews. Many regional directories offer business owners the opportunity to announce events, create coupons, monitor visitor traffic, and contact customers privately. Some of the currently popular regional business advertising directories include:

Yelp ? Yelp offers free listings for business owners and managers. ?Yelpers? rate and review various types of businesses, from restaurants to pet sitters. Yelp encourages users to socialize using online chatting and community tools.

Google Places ? Google Places offers free business listings with some advanced features. Photos, coupons, directions, and more can be included in a Google Places listing. Listing with Google Places improves your visibility in Google search listings and on Google Maps.

Yellow Pages ? A popular destination for consumers, Yellow Pages offers a free basic business listing and various paid options.

Yellow Book ? Yellow Book is another popular local search directory for consumers. Yellow Book offers a wide variety of free and premium tools for business owners.

CitySlick.net ? CitySlick.net offers a free service and various levels of premium features, including video promotions and classified ads.

Industry-related business advertising directories focus on a specific business type. Consumers looking for a competent attorney, for example, enter their zip code in a web site search field and receive a listing of nearby professionals. Some industry directories provide contact forms for each listing so that potential clients may contact the business professional directly.

Other useful types of business directories include listings with your local Chamber of Commerce, professional organizations, and local media web sites.

USAID cuts funding for Elmo on Pakistan TV

The US cut $20 million for Pakistani version of Sesame Street. USAID alleges fraud against the show's producers, but the cutbacks come as the US is pulling back foreign aid.

The cutbacks come amid allegations of fraud by the Lahore-based theater group that produces the children?s show, the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop, but it also comes at a time when the US-Pakistani relationship is strained, and when the US government is cutting back dramatically on foreign aid worldwide.

USAID allocated $20 million for the production of Sim Sim Hamara (which means ?Our Street? in Urdu), and $6.7 million of that was used to produce the first season, which premiered in 2011. The remainder of the contract has been terminated, pending the results of an investigation into the fraud charges.

"We did launch an investigation into the allegations. We also sent the theater workshop a letter that terminates the project agreement," US State Department spokesman Mark Toner told a news briefing in Washington on June 5. "No one is questioning, obviously, the value and positive impact of this kind of programming for children. But this is about allegations of corruption."

Faizaan Peerzada, Rafi Peer?s chief operating officer, denied the fraud charges, saying in a statement, ?Rafi Peer is proud of its association with the project and the quality of children?s educational television programming created within Pakistan as a result.?

Whatever the ultimate result of the investigation, the shutdown of funds into children?s broadcasting in Pakistan come at an unfortunate time in the US-Pakistani relationship.

NATO airstrikes and US special forces raids on Pakistani territory have strained Pakistani patience with the US-led war on terror, and Pakistan has shut off NATO?s use of Pakistani roads and ports to resupply its troops in Afghanistan. The US, meanwhile, has grown increasingly frustrated with what it sees as signs of either Pakistani collusion with militant groups such as the Taliban, or incompetence in bringing them under control.

Journey into a giant magnetic tornado on the sun

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV

You probably wouldn't want to get sucked into a giant magnetic tornado on the sun. But now you can get up close without feeling the effect thanks to a new animation by Sven Wedemeyer-B?hm from the University of Oslo in Norway and colleagues that simulates the evolution of the swirling activity.

The red lines in the video depict the magnetic field, while the green strands represent the velocity in the tornado's vortex. The spiralling activity begins when convection near the sun's surface pulls downwards, twisting magnetic fields and plasma (shown in yellow) above it. This transports energy from the sun's surface to its uppermost layer, heating up the outer atmosphere.

Compared to tornadoes on Earth, solar twisters are much bigger, some covering areas as big as Europe or America, and with winds that blow at tens of thousands of kilometres per hour.

To find out more about what recent research has revealed about the phenomenon, read our full article, Astrophile: Solar cyclones hold fusion reactor clues

Nonprofits announce $30 million campaign to help veterans

By Rebecca Ruiz

A group of nonprofits and charities dedicated to helping veterans announced Wednesday a campaign to raise $30 million to assist former service members.?

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, a nonprofit with 200,000 members nationwide, unveiled a Veteran Support Fund that will direct donations to itself and four other organizations. The initiative was staked by six entrepreneurs and philanthropists whose founding gifts totaled $1.1 million.

The partner organizations are Operation Mend, which gives medical support to critically injured veterans; Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which provides coping and trauma resources to survivors of deceased service members; Operation Homefront, which offers emergency financial aid to wounded warriors and families of service members; and the National Military Family Association, which advocates for benefits and programs to support military families.

?

"Supporting veterans isn?t charity, it?s an absolute necessity and an investment in our country?s future," Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of IAVA, said in a statement. "After ten years of war, our nation?s military families are strained, nonprofit services are maxed out and our veterans? community is severely under-resourced."

Jim Knotts, president and CEO of Operation Homefront, told msnbc.com that the increased funding will help the organization provide emergency assistance, like food, transitional housing and money for car repairs, to more families. Last year, Operation Homefront met more than 5,000 emergency requests and provided transitional housing for 80 families.

Knotts said that while the organization's fundraising has been strong in recent years, he is concerned that donations will dwindle as service members return from Afghanistan.

"A lot of people are thinking that we?re out of Iraq and we?ll be out of Afghanistan so our need to support the military will end soon," he said. "But it will be a 50-year campaign to support this generation of wounded warriors ... Even military families who remain will have ongoing needs as a result of 10 years worth of war."

IAVA said the initiative will be a "centralized platform where Americans can support and donate to a consortium of effective and trusted best-in-class veterans? organizations."

Charity Navigator, which evaluates select charities and nonprofits, has awarded three- and four-star ratings to Operation Homefront, National Military Family Association and Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.

Sandra Miniutti, vice president of marketing and chief financial officer for Charity Navigator, said that donating to a veterans organization or charity can be an emotional decision.

"Supporting our troops, their families and the veterans are issues that tug at everyone?s heart strings," Miniutti told msnbc.com. "Oftentimes, donors give to these types of charities solely with their heart. They fail to stop and use their head too and vet the charities to ensure that they are financially healthy, accountable and transparent and produce real results."

White Rot Fungi Slowed Coal Formation

News | Evolution

The evolution of the ability to break down a plant's protective lignin largely stopped the geologic burial of carbon that formed present-day coal deposits?and may provide secrets to making biofuels from inedible parts of plants

A toughened crosshatch of carbon-based molecules is all that stands between plants and their total destruction at the hands of an array of microbes and fungi. Called lignin, the compound enables redwoods to tower and woody herbs to resist rot. As a result, lignin is the second-most abundant biological compound on the planet?and the bane of would-be biofuel-makers everywhere, blocking their best efforts to make fuels from the inedible parts of plants. It is also the reason for the vast deposits of coal laid down millions of years ago.

Now a new genomic analysis suggests why Earth significantly slowed its coal-making processes roughly 300 million years ago?mushrooms evolved the ability to break down lignin. "These white rot fungi are major decomposers of wood and the only organism that achieves substantial degradation of lignin," explains mycologist David Hibbett of Clark University in Massachusetts, who led the research published in Science on June 29.

By comparing 12 newly sequenced genomes of mushroom fungi with 19 existing genomes, the researchers determined that an ancestral white rot fungi (Agaricomycetes) first evolved the ability to break down lignin. The scientists then used so-called "molecular clock analysis"?a dating technique based on the hypothesis that genes accumulate mutations at a relatively regular rate like trees form rings that record their growth. Such an analysis suggests that an ancestral white rot fungi developed this lignin-degrading ability roughly 290 million years ago, a conclusion backed by comparison with the appearance in the fossil record of three other types of fungi (although the first definitive white rot fossil does not appear until roughly 260 million years ago) and the subsequent expansion and refinement of the arsenal of enzymes employed. The 60-million-year-long Carboniferous period?when the bulk of the world's coal deposits were laid down and atmospheric CO2 levels declined?ended roughly 300 million years ago.

The coincidental timing suggests the appearance of this ability to break down lignin helped slow the massive burial of organic carbon via nondegraded tree trunks and other wood, such as the lignin-rich fernlike plants known as arborescent lycophytes, now extinct. Previous explanations largely argued that such coal formation was a result of the Carboniferous's swampy conditions?after lignin-rich plants fell into these swamps, they simply were buried rather than broken down by fungi or microbes and turned to peat and then coal over geologic time frame. "They're not mutually exclusive," Hibbett notes, although more of the easily overlooked fungal fossils would need to be found to determine the truth.

How exactly white rot breaks down lignin remains unknown. The fungi releases reactive molecules and enzymes that seemingly tear the plant-protecting compound apart via "brute force," in the words of Hibbett. Once the protective lignin is out of the way, the white rot fungi feast on the cellulose, which comprises more digestible plant sugars. And subsequent evolution has given so-called brown rot fungi the means to work around lignin without attacking it directly. "They have evolved a way to get at cellulose and leave the lignin behind," Hibbett says, which results in the crumbly, brown logs littering temperate forests today?potentially coal in the distant future.

Those rocking 5.1 and higher can roll on over to iTunes to pick up the straightforwardly named Podcasts, right this very second. The iPhone / iPad-friendly app is designed as a repository for the manner of pre-recorded talk radio-killing entertainment that Cupertino inadvertently helped name. We downloaded the app and took it for a spin. Check out the results after the break.

(AP) ? The beloved Galapagos Islands giant tortoise known as Lonesome George will remain a tourist attraction even in death.

Ecuador's environment minister says the reptile that became a symbol of disappearing species will be embalmed and placed on display on Santa Cruz island.

Minister Marcela Aguinaga told reporters Tuesday that an autopsy determined that Lonesome George died of old age. He was believed to be about 100 years old.

Lonesome George was the last of the Pinta Island giant tortoise subspecies, and he failed to leave offspring despite the best efforts of conservationists.

He was discovered in 1972 discovery on Pinta Island and became an ambassador of sorts for the archipelago off Ecuador's coast whose unique flora and fauna helped inspire Charles Darwin's ideas on evolution.

We Evolved To Eat Meat, But How Much Is Too Much?

Paleo diet promoter John Durant digs into some ribs. Enlarge Allison Aubrey/NPR

Paleo diet promoter John Durant digs into some ribs.

    Allison Aubrey/NPR

Paleo diet promoter John Durant digs into some ribs.

You won't catch John Durant in a tie. Shoes are optional, too. He's traded cubicle life for something a little wild: Promoting the diet and lifestyle of our ancestors from the paleolithic era. He's blogging and writing a book about his approach.

"For millions of years, we didn't have an obesity problem because we ate foods that our metabolism was adapted to," Durant says. Foods such as root vegetables, tubers, fish and of course, red meat.

"We were active and lived a healthy lifestyle," he says. Durant is one of many folks following the popular meat-laden paleo diet, He packs his freezer with deer meat and has found lots of places near his home in Manhattan to buy marrow bones and organ meats, as well as paleo-friendly barbecue joints for a meal out.

But modern medicine tells us that too much meat is bad for us, so what's a consumer to do?

    ?

During a work-out at a Crossfit Gym, a gathering spot for lots of paleo-enthusiasts, Durant told me its no longer a challenge for him to avoid the onslaught of bagels and pizza at every street corner. The paleo approach is to eliminate grains and processed food, which are relatively new to the human diet. And, as a result, Durant says he no longer gets the spikes and dips in his moods, and feels better.

Now, everyone from the American Cancer Society to the American Heart Association, and popular food writers such as Mark Bittman tell us to eat less red meat.

But Durant says it's a meat-based diet that was fundamental to early human development.

My colleague Chris Joyce has reported on how a meat-based diet helped make us smarter.

And paleoanthropologist John Hawks at the University of Wisonsin, Madison agrees. "We definitely evolved to eat meat."

"When we look at the fossils of early homo (sapien) we see this immediate increase in the size of the body and also increase in the size of the brain," Hawks explains.

But that was then. Very few cavemen lived long enough to get heart disease or cancer. These are the reasons.....we're told to limit red meat consumption now.

"It really began in a big way in the Framingham study in the 1950's" says Michael Thun, an epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society.

"It (this study) found a relationship between total cholesterol and heart disease." Over the years, there has been debate about whether high cholesterol is a a cause ? or simply a marker ? of higher heart disease risks. But studies like this one helped raise the red flag about high-cholesterol foods, such as red meat.

Then, the evidence started mounting that people who at daily servings of red meat increased their risks of developing certain cancers. For colon cancer, studies show that people who eat the most have about double the risk, compared to people who eat the least red meat.

"That's been found in lots of studies," says Thun, "so it's pretty well accepted."

Paleo enthusiast John Durant says he's thought about these studies and listened to the health experts... but he's not worried. He says lots of of the people in these big epidemiological studies are sedentary, and overweight.

He may be eating more red meat than the experts recommend, but he believes his paleo lifestyle, which includes running barefoot in Central Park, helps keep him thin, active and healthy. And he's not alone ? the movement is attracting some medical professionals.

Since there aren't studies of people who've been following the paleo diet, Thun says, it's hard to evaluate. "There's just not been enough people eating one kind of paleolithic diet to tell."

As for the rest of us who want to know how much red meat is too much, the best evidence suggests that cutting back to two to three servings a week is a good guide.

Zumba no longer just exercise, it's big business

MIAMI (Reuters) - Alberto Perez started out as a street performer and then an aerobics teacher in Colombia, making extra cash on the side teaching the wives of businessmen how to dance in nightclubs in his hometown, Cali.

Today, he stands at the center of the Zumba exercise craze, having helped transform Zumba Fitness, a private company, into a rapidly growing fitness empire with heavyweight investor backing.

"I'm not a businessman, but I knew this had the potential to be something special," said Perez, who along with two Colombian associates founded the Miami-based company.

Zumba, a Latin dance-inspired aerobic workout, has exploded from a Miami gym phenomenon to infomercial and DVD smash hit into a global craze with some 12 million people taking classes every week in at least 125 countries. Zumba Fitness now boasts being the largest branded fitness program in the world.

Started on a shoestring budget in a Miami garage nearly 11 years ago, Zumba Fitness now has more than 200 employees, and a pair of New York investment firms are betting the craze has staying power.

What began as a company focused on fitness has evolved into a lifestyle and entertainment brand combining e-commerce, apparel and music, and a sought-after outlet for stars like hip-hop artists Pitbull and Wyclef Jean and reggaeton singer Don Omar who have turned to Zumba to promote their music.

    THE ACCIDENTAL INSTRUCTOR

Zumba got its start by chance in the 1980s.

Perez, who is known as Beto, was eking out a living as a street performer and salsa and merengue nightclub dancer known for his boyish model looks and muscular physique.

One day the owner of a nearby gym called and asked if Perez could stand in for an injured aerobics teacher. He agreed - but didn't mention he had never done aerobics and rushed out and bought a copy of Jane Fonda's Workout Book.

    His fitness career was born.

Months later, getting ready for a class, Perez forgot his aerobics music. Instead, he put on his own merengue and salsa tapes and improvised dance moves for a workout, creating what today is known as Zumba.

It proved to be a hit and he quickly developed a loyal following before he moved to Bogota, where he briefly worked as a choreographer with pop star Shakira.

In 1999, Perez packed up and headed to Miami, speaking no English but hoping to make a breakthrough in the Latin-flavored U.S. city with his new dance exercise class.

He struggled before eventually building up a large, adoring fan base of mostly Colombian expatriate women, including the mother of Alberto Perlman.

Then a technology entrepreneur, Perlman lost his job in the dot-com bust two years later and was struggling with what career move to make next. He co-founded Zumba Fitness and is now its chief executive.

"My mom had been taking his classes for years," he said. "She would tell me about this amazing class but I never paid attention. When the bubble burst, I went to have dinner at her house and she kept saying 'Talk to Beto, maybe you guys could start a gym.'"

"I said I'd meet with him but I wasn't sure what I was going to do with him," Perlman recalled. But after watching a class, he came up with the idea for a new fitness video he hoped could be an infomercial success.

The men sought to put a name on the exercise, first thinking of the Spanish word rumba, which loosely translates as party, but realized it was already trademarked.

"We just went through the alphabet to see what rhymes with rumba," Perlman said. "We were getting nervous by the end, nothing sounded good - bumba, kumba. Then we settled on Zumba, it was perfect."

    12 MILLION AND COUNTING

Perlman said growing the instructor and student base is the firm's top priority, with a goal of one day reaching 100 million students, more than eight times the current number.

The company has also launched its own line of brightly colored clothing, Zumba footwear and a glossy magazine named "ZLife", all designed in its Miami office.

But it is also focused on developing TV shows, pushing into global markets, particularly Eastern Europe, Asia and Latin America, and exploiting a new business opportunity: fitness concerts.

"I see Zumba Fitness also as an entertainment brand," Perlman said. "It's becoming a music, TV and concert platform."

Fitness fads rise and fall. But two prominent investment firms have made bets Zumba Fitness will avoid going the way of workout has-beens like Jazzercise, Thighmaster and the Ab Rocket.

"You see a lot of feasts and famines in the fitness industry," said Richard Wells, managing director of New York-based Insight Venture Partners, a private equity and venture capital firm that has invested in Twitter and Tumblr.

The firm made a minority investment in Zumba Fitness earlier this year. "They are just scratching the surface of its potential," Wells said.

The Raine Group, a media and entertainment investment firm based in New York, also has invested in the firm.

Neither company would reveal the size of its investment.

Perlman said Zumba Fitness hopes to draw on the firms for media, entertainment and technology resources and has no plans to go public.

"While there isn't a lot we rule out at Zumba Fitness, this is not on our radar at this time," he said.

    THE ZUMBA ECOSYSTEM

Once Zumba gained exposure on infomercials, fans started asking for more. The company began receiving calls at all hours of the day from people saying "I want to be a Zumba instructor," said Perlman.

By 2005, the company decided to develop the global instructor network and Zumba took off. The instructors each pay $30 a month to receive regular installments of new music and dance and exercise steps.

"It's their ecosystem," said Wells, the investor.

The network has turned Zumba instructors in the United States and across the globe as far away as South Korea and Norway into entrepreneurs.

"It's become my small business," said Betsy Dopico, a native Cuban who moved to Miami from Mexico four years ago and now teaches Zumba classes.

On a recent night, around 60 people packed a downtown Miami dance studio for her hourlong class. Salsa and merengue rhythms throbbed on loudspeakers as the group of mostly 20-something and middle-aged women in sweat-drenched T-shirts and exercise tights spun around, kicked and jumped to the music.

A handful of men also participated, most of them mimicking Dopico's moves from the back of the class.

Mehdi Benhaddouch, a 32-year-old account executive at a financial company, said he had grown bored with gym workouts before settling on Zumba a few months ago. "It's like going to a nightclub, but you're exercising," he said.

The company has turned live concerts into fitness experiences where concert-goers follow Zumba instructors on stage while artists perform.

A concert in Orlando, Florida, last year drew thousands.

"My dream is to see fitness concerts all over the world, traveling shows, permanent shows in Las Vegas," Perlman said. "The artists love it too, because it's a new way of selling their music."

Success has also brought challenges. Pirated versions of Zumba Fitness DVDs and clothing have led the company to hire a staff of a dozen people to combat counterfeiting.

Perez, whose official title is "chief creative officer", said Zumba's explosive popularity is rooted in its simplicity of having a good time while trying to stay fit.

"Over the years, fitness became too complicated and difficult," he said. "The industry turned egocentric with an emphasis on instructors doing the exercises. It became a show."

He added: "They forgot about normal people - mothers, grandmothers and the housewives who want to stay in shape and have some fun. That's the essence of Zumba."

Wind-stoked wildfires spread in Colo., Utah

Firefighters in Western U.S. states struggled to contain out-of-control wind-stoked wildfires on Saturday as summer temperatures mounted, and a fresh blaze consumed more homes in Colorado even as Utah allowed 2,500 evacuees back for the night.

Colorado firefighters remained unable to halt the spread of the High Park Fire, a growing 81,190-acre blaze in steep canyons west of Fort Collins. The fire jumped containment lines on Friday and roared through a subdivision, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents.

"The fire continues to spread west into steep, inaccessible areas with beetle-killed timber on the west and northwest portions of the fire," a statement from the federal fire incident command center said.

As firefighters focused on that monster blaze, a fire that erupted 18 miles away in a cabin near the Rocky Mountain National Park ripped through 21 vacation dwellings and full-time residences in Estes Park, the area's fire chief said.

Reid Armstrong, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service, said that resources had to be diverted from the High Park fire to battle the destructive 20-acre blaze. But officials said the small fire was nearly under control.

The losses in Estes Park were on top of 200 other homes destroyed by the High Park fire in the two weeks since the lightning-sparked blaze was first spotted in Colorado, where temperatures hit the triple digits in many areas on Saturday.

In Denver, a dense canopy of gray smoke could be seen drifting east from the fire zone over Colorado's high plains, at times blocking the view of the mountains, and the smell of burning timber wafted through the city.

The High Park fire is blamed for the death of a 62-year-old grandmother who perished in her mountain cabin. It is already the state's most destructive and the second-largest on record in Colorado.

As of Friday, there were 15 large, uncontained wildfires being fought across the country, most in six Western states - Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona - the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, reported.

    Evacuation orders lifted
Fanned by winds, Utah's so-called Dump Fire about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City grew to 6,023 acres on Saturday from 4,000 late Friday, and was only about 30 percent contained, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Cami Lee said.

The fire was burning primarily south and west of Saratoga Springs, where wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour were expected to confound firefighting efforts, Lee said.

But Utah officials lifted evacuation orders on Saturday evening that had kept residents out of homes in Saratoga Springs and nearby Eagle Mountain, although residents were urged to stay on alert.

"We hope you're there for the night, but you need to be prepared," Eagle Mountain Mayor Heather Jackson said. "The winds are still blowing, the fire can still flare back up."

Officials said target shooters triggered the blaze near a city landfill on Thursday. It is the 20th fire in Utah started by target shooting this year, they said.

As fire managers predicted, winds with gusts of more than 20 miles per hour pushed the flames westward toward homes on Saturday afternoon, Curry said. But containment lines held, persuading officials that residents could safely return.

On Saturday, officials revised down substantially the number of people evacuated from the two communities. Some 588 homes were evacuated in the towns on Friday, affecting up to 2,500 residents, according to Jason Curry of Utah's office of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

On Friday, officials had said up to 8,000 were evacuated. The change followed a more accurate count, Curry said.

Some 450 firefighters were on the ground Saturday in Utah, with support from two air tankers and several helicopters. One firefighter had suffered minor burns, but no other injuries had been reported.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start this summer in parts of the Northern Rockies, the acreage burned nationwide is about on a par with the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

The biggest by far was the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire in New Mexico, that state's largest on record, which has charred almost 300,000 acres. That blaze is nearly 90 percent contained.
