Modern culture began in South Africa 44,000 years ago

Call it the end of the late late show. The Later Stone Age technology was thought to have made its first appearance in South Africa much later than it did in Europe. A new analysis of South African finds suggests modern culture emerged in both areas at the same time.

In Europe, the Upper Palaeolithic ? another term for the Later Stone Age ? is commonly dated to around 45,000 years ago. In South Africa the archaeological evidence suggests the Later Stone Age did not begin until much later ? around 22,000 years ago.

Perhaps no longer, though. Paola Villa of the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History in Boulder, and her colleagues, have delved deep into the layers of Border Cave in South Africa, and found that Middle Stone Age tool-making techniques were giving way to Later Stone Age technology by 44,000 years ago. For instance, stone spear points ? a hallmark of Middle Stone Age technology ? were replaced by bows and bone arrows.

A companion paper, headed by Francesco d'Errico of the University of Bordeaux, France, found organic evidence that pointed to a similar date, including ornamental ostrich eggshell beads, digging sticks, and beeswax wrapped in fibres ? the oldest recorded use of beeswax as an adhesive for attaching tools to handles. It's likely that these organic artefacts represent the beginning of the modern-day San hunter-gatherer society in South Africa.

The Border Cave evidence also shows a striking trend of internal evolution. Though Later Stone Age technologies could theoretically have spread rapidly to the north and south from a source in East Africa, Villa's evidence suggests otherwise. The South African finds suggest a gradual shift into the Later Stone Age, while retaining a few elements from earlier times in the form of notched bones, bone awls and marine shell beads. That points to the South African populations evolving many of their later tools independently.

"To prove internal evolution, you need a place like Border Cave that has a long sequence, many layers, is well dated, and all use the same materials to make artefacts," says Villa.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery

Depending on what task you ask it to perform, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Pro Edition does either an impressively stellar or a woefully earthbound job of bringing lost files back to life like the phoenix in its name. It has plenty of interface glitches, and it was unable to perform some tasks that OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional ($149.99, 4 stars) performed easily, but it was also able to perform some recovery tasks even more smoothly than OnTrack's offering. When you need to recover lost data, you don't need to pay for the software until after it scans your disk to test whether it can retrieve your files. If it displays your lost files in its preview screen, it can almost certainly recover them, and you can then pay for the program online to enable the program's recovery features.

Starting With Stellar
When you start up Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, it offers a simple menu with three options, Drive Recovery, CD Recovery, and Photo Recovery. The Drive Recovery option is the most powerful, and leads to a full range of recovery methods. You first select the drive where you want to recover data, then choose among four methods: Quick Recovery, Deleted Recovery, Advanced Recovery, and Raw Recovery. The first method takes only a few seconds to scan a drive, the rest take longer. Raw Recovery can take as long as an hour to scan a very large disk. In my tests on an NTFS-formatted hard disk, the Quick Recovery method was enough to recover the deleted files I was looking for, but a disk with a scrambled directory structure would have required the Advanced or Raw methods.

As with rival products, I tested Stellar Phoenix with deleted documents on my hard disk and with a USB key that I had formatted to use as an emergency boot disk but which?before I formatted it?I had used to store backup copies of music files. In each case the program scanned the drive and displayed tree-structured lists of possibly-recoverable files.

Some Expertise Required
Like rival products, Stellar Phoenix requires you to know what you're doing when choosing files from these lists. For example, I searched for a deleted Word file named "Two Broadcasts.docx." The program listed a deleted file named "~$o Broadcasts.docx" but that wasn't the file I wanted?instead, as the file list showed me, it was a 162-byte file probably left behind by Word when I last edited the file. The file I actually wanted to recover was named "$RC9HQRN.docx," as I discovered by highlighting it in the program's list and looking at its content in the program's built-in previewer?an invaluable feature that OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional and Recuva both lack. In both those other programs, I had to save each deleted file to a disk and then open it in Word to see if it was the file I was looking for.

I had a harder time recovering MP3 files from a USB stick that I had reformatted, with the effect that none of the MP3 files were visible in Windows Explorer and apparently did not exist. OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional took ten minutes to scan my 8GB USB stick and let me recover hundreds of MP3 files to a different drive. OnTrack even displayed each file by its original name and let me open it in my default music-player software to make sure it was the file I wanted. In contrast, Stellar Phoenix took almost four hours to scan the same disk, and then listed nine music files as recoverable. Unfortunately, when I recovered those files and tried to listen to them, they all turned out to be corrupt and unplayable. Recuva also couldn't recover any music files from my USB stick, but at least it didn't claim to recover them.

Feature Light
But this doesn't mean that Stellar Phoenix might be the program you choose for recovering files from the NTFS disk in your computer. Stellar Phoenix includes a feature that lets you save recovered files to an FTP server instead of to a local disk. Unfortunately, most modern FTP servers use Secure FTP instead of the traditional FTP supported by Stellar Phoenix, so this feature may have only limited use in the real world. The program does include some other advanced features that match similar features in OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional, for example a feature that creates a full image of a drive you can try to restore data from the cloned copy?a feature that comes in handy if the drive is getting physically flaky and might not be accessible at all at a later time.

A feature that worked less well was an advanced option that is supposed to show the S.M.A.R.T. status of a disk?what the disk reports about its own health. The program reported that the S.M.A.R.T. feature was disabled on my hard disk, but in fact it isn't disabled, and other utilities showed a full S.M.A.R.T. status report.

All in all, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is well worth a try when you're trying to recover lost files from your desktop or laptop and you don't have any recovery software already on hand. Just download the program, let it scan your disk, and pay for it if it can display your lost file in its preview pane. You can't lose, and you can certainly gain. But if you're preparing in advance for possible data disasters, you'll probably prefer OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional.

How to talk to your Mac: Using diction effectively

One of the more useful and interesting features in OS X Mountain Lion is Dictation, which allows you to speak to your Mac and have your words translated to text. It's system-wide, and works in any app where text can be entered. Before you dive in and start speaking to your Mac, here's how to use it to its fullest.

If you've used a tool like Dragon Naturally Speaking, Siri on your iPhone, or Google Voice Actions (or another personal assistant) on your Android phone, you know how Dictation works already. The difference here is that instead of using Dictation to issue commands, search the web, or call friends, it's ideal for writing documents, commenting on articles, and turning your thoughts into blocks of text anywhere text can be entered. Here's how to set it up.

Enable Dictation in System Preferences

1. Click the Apple Menu and select System Preferences
2. Under "System" click "Dictation and Speech."
3. Toggle Dictation from Off (default) to On.
4. Optional: Change the default keyboard shortcut to enable dictation?if you use an external keyboard, you may not have a dedicated function button.

Once enabled, tap the function key (FN) twice (or whichever shortcut you selected) to start or stop Dictation. You can also skip System Preferences entirely by tapping the function key twice from any window, but we think the long way is best so you can change the shortcut if you want.

Keep in mind that when you use Dictation, your words (and some other data) are sent to Apple to be translated into text?much like when you use Siri. Apple says the data is used to improve voice recognition only, and not associated with any other information Apple may have about you.

Use a Headset or Microphone
In the Dictation and Speech preferences, you have the choice to switch the input used for dictation to your Mac's line-in over the internal microphone. Unless you're sitting right in front of your Mac all the time, we'd suggest using a headset or dedicated microphone when you're working with Dictation. Using the internal mic isn't bad, but using a headset is definitely better and in our tests led to fewer skipped or incorrect words. Of course, common sense also applies: speak loudly and clearly when working with dictation and you'll have better luck. No mumbling!

Don't forget punctuation and commands
Remember, the dictation tool translates your words into text?it doesn't know much about grammar. That means if you want a comma in a sentence, or want to end a sentence with a period or exclamation point, you have to say it aloud for the app to understand what you want. It''s tricky to get into the habit of saying things like?"Dear Adam comma new line thank you for sending this over to me period it's a huge help exclamation point"?but you'll get the hang of it. The result, of course, would be:

Dictation does a good job of recognizing proper nouns and capitalizing them, and can even recognize your contacts' names and proper spellings. Here are some other helpful commands to remember:

• "All Caps"?turns all of the following text into ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.
• "New Paragraph", as the name implies, starts a new paragraph.
• "New Line"?inserts a carriage return.
• Dollar amounts and dates are automatically recognized, so saying "thirteen dollars and twenty five cents" will appear as "$13.25," and "july twenty-fifth twenty-twelve at 9 PM" will appear "July 25, 2012 at 9PM."
• "Smiley" and "Frowny" correspond to their emoticons, and are displayed as ":-)" and ":-(" respectively.
• Punctuation like "comma", "period", and "quotation mark", all work the way you would expect.

Dictation works out of the box. You don't need to train it with your voice, and while it does get better over time as it learns your voice, it's not like many mobile assistants that need hours of input before they work effectively. Best of all, it supports US, UK, and Australian English, so an accent from any of those locations won't matter much. If you use your Mac in a different language, Dictation also supports French, German, and Japanese, and will enter text spoken in those languages correctly.

Google admits it did not delete Street View data

Google said on Friday it had not kept its promise to delete all the personal data, such as emails, its Street View cars collected in Britain and other countries in 2010.

The U.S. company admitted in May 2010 that its vehicles, which photograph neighborhoods to create street level images, had accidentally collected data from unsecured wireless networks used by residents in more than 30 countries.

The failure to comply with a promise to delete all the data was notified to Britain's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), which said the fact that the data still existed appeared to breach an undertaking signed by Google in November 2010.

"The ICO is clear that this information should never have been collected in the first place and the company's failure to secure its deletion as promised is a cause for concern," the ICO said.

Google said the data came to light when it searched by hand its Street View disk inventory.

"Google has recently confirmed that it still has in its possession a small portion of ... data collected by our Street View vehicles in the UK," Peter Fleischer, Google's global privacy counsel said in a letter published by the ICO.

"Google apologizes for this error."

Google said it was in the process of notifying relevant authorities in other countries.

The ICO told Google it must supply the data immediately so it could be subjected to forensic analysis before the ICO decided on the necessary course of action.

The Web search leader was fined $25,000 in April for impeding a U.S. investigation into Street View data collection.

Tajik forces demand rebels surrender former warlord

DUSHANBE (Reuters) - Tajik government forces demanded rebel commanders lay down their arms and hand over a former warlord on Thursday, a security source said, as the two sides began a second day of talks after a battle which killed 42 people.

President Imomali Rakhmon called off a military offensive after the fierce fighting on Tuesday in a remote mountain region next to Afghanistan. Troops continued to patrol the streets on Thursday.

The ceasefire in the autonomous Gorno-Badakhshan region followed a campaign to capture former warlord Tolib Ayombekov, a show of strength by a government whose control over parts of the Central Asian state remains fragile 15 years after a civil war.

Twelve soldiers and 30 rebels were killed in the operation to apprehend Ayombekov, who fought against Rakhmon's troops in a 1992-97 civil war before receiving a government job in the peace deal that ended the conflict.

The government has offered amnesty to all rebels except the four fighters, including Ayombekov, it accuses of killing the regional head of the State Committee on National Security, whose murder on Saturday was the trigger for the military offensive.

"We are trying to persuade the fighters to lay down their arms and hand over the four suspects, including Ayombekov," a senior Tajik security source said on condition of anonymity.

"It could take a week or two. That's still better than shooting each other," he said. "Of course, they cannot continue forever. We've suffered heavy losses, but we will suffer more to end this situation if they do not agree to our conditions."

Tajikistan, with a population of 7.5 million, is the poorest of 15 former Soviet republics. Tens of thousands died in its civil war, in which Rakhmon's Moscow-backed troops fought a loosely aligned opposition that included many Islamist fighters.

Former imperial master Russia still has 6,000 troops stationed in Tajikistan, its largest military deployment abroad and a bulwark against the threat of Islamist violence spilling across the Afghan border when NATO pulls its troops out in 2014.

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), a 56-nation security body currently under Ireland's chairmanship, issued a statement late on Wednesday urging "all parties to exercise restraint".

STRAY BULLETS

Khorog, capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan region and the nearest town to the fighting deep in the Pamir mountains, was calm on Thursday, the security source and a local resident said. Most communications were cut off for a third consecutive day.

The local resident, able to communicate via satellite link, said people had returned to work and that shops were open for a second day on Thursday. "We can buy rice, pasta, flour and butter. We are not going hungry," he said.

He said he was aware of at least two civilian deaths, one elderly man and one 18-year-old man caught in crossfire. He said he had attended the funeral of the younger man and that his neighbor had informed him about the elderly man.

The security service source said: "I don't know anything about civilian casualties. I have heard there may be some, as a result of stray bullets."

Gorno-Badakhshan, separated from Afghanistan by the Pyandzh river, is an autonomous region where the authority of the central government is fragile. Most of the 250,000 population sided with the opposition during the civil war.

Ayombekov has denied involvement in the death of Maj.-Gen. Abdullo Nazarov, head of the regional branch of the GKNB, successor to the Soviet-era KGB. The GKNB has said his gang has been involved in smuggling drugs, tobacco and precious stones.

"All criminal groups active in the Pamir should give up their weapons and face justice," the presidential press service quoted Rakhmon as saying on Wednesday at a meeting with the prosecutor-general and government officials.

April 23: Still privately held, Facebook says first-quarter net income fell 12 percent to $205 million, weighed down by higher expenses even as its revenue rose 45 percent to $1.06 billion. Facebook also says it plans list its stock on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol "FB."

May 3: Facebook sets a price range of $28 to $35 for its IPO. The company and its early investors plan to sell 337.4 million shares. At the high end, that would raise as much as $11.8 billion, although not all goes to the company. Facebook's offering values it at $76 billion to $95 billion.

May 7: Facebook begins a so-called road show. Executives travel to key cities to tell potential investors why they should invest in the stock. The first stop is New York.

May 8. Road show goes to Boston.

May 11: Facebook updates its policy to give users more clarity on how information they share is used by the company. The company also signals that it may start showing people ads on websites other than Facebook. Other companies already do this. How would that work? Users might see ads based on their Facebook "likes" pop up on other sites. Road show concludes in Palo Alto, Calif.

May 15: Facebook increases its price range for the IPO to $34 to $38 per share. At the high end, the sale would raise about $12.8 billion and value the company at $104 billion.

May 16: Responding to extraordinary demand, Facebook adds 84 million shares, worth up to $3.2 billion, to the IPO. That brings the total to 421 million shares, or $16 billion based on a price of $38 per share, offered by Facebook and its early investors.

May 17: Facebook prices its IPO at $38 per share, raising $16 billion. The company stands to reap as much as $18.4 billion if extra shares reserved to cover additional demand are sold too. That would be the second-largest U.S. IPO ever, lagging only Visa Inc. The offering values Facebook at about $104 billion.

May 18: Surrounded by cheering employees and wearing his signature hoodie, Zuckerberg rings the opening bell of the Nasdaq from Facebook headquarters in Silicon Valley. About two hours later, Facebook begins trading, opening at $42.05 per share after an anxiety-filled half-hour delay caused by technical problems at Nasdaq. Volume is huge: More than 500 million shares change hands. But the stock closes almost unchanged at $38.23.

May 21: Facebook's stock closes below its IPO price.

May 29: Facebook's stock falls below $30 for first time.

June 6: The Nasdaq stock exchange says it plans to hand out $40 million in cash and credit to reimburse investment firms that got ensnared by technical problems with trading Facebook stock. FINRA, the financial industry's self-regulatory group, will review claims for compensation. Facebook's stock hits a low of $25.52.

CARSON, California (AP) -Tottenham's Gareth Bale and Los Angeles' David Junior Lopes scored first-half goals as Spurs and the Galaxy played out a 1-1 draw in friendly on Tuesday.

Bale scored on a brilliant 17th-minute header to give the English club the lead but Brazilian defender Lopes sent home a feed from Hector Jimenez 11 minutes later to pull L.A. even.

The Galaxy were without stars David Beckham, in London for the Olympics, and Landon Donovan, preparing for Wednesday's MLS All-Star game against Chelsea.

Former Tottenham star Robbie Keane led L.A.'s first-half attack.

Tottenham, playing its first match of a three-game U.S. tour, lost midfielder Rafael van der Vaart and fullback Kyle Walker to injury. Van der Vaart walked off in the 35th minute with an apparent groin injury, and Walker was hurt midway through the second half, tumbling into the advertising board behind the Spurs' goal.

Bale outjumped the Galaxy's Omar Gonzalez, MLS' 2011 defender of the year, to send new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson's cross from the left flank over goalkeeper Brian Perk and into the upper-left corner.

Lopes scored his first goal since joining the Galaxy in April just 11 minutes later, finishing a superb sequence after Spurs cleared a corner kick.

Marcelo Sarvas found Hector Jimenez sneaking behind Tottenham left back Sebastien Bassong, curled the ball onto the second-year winger's foot, and Jimenez volleyed it low across the box for Lopes to finish.

L.A. had the better chances the rest of the half, with Keane twice reaching the box unopposed - Kyle Walker knocked the ball away from behind in the 33rd minute, and goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini saved with a foot in the 39th.

The Galaxy made seven changes at halftime, and a young group - two teenagers up front, a rookie in goal, three more on the backline and another in midfield - was forced to defend almost all of the second half.

Tottenham managed several chances, with Jermain Defoe, racing past Gonzalez and into the box from a pass from behind midfield, firing just past the left post in the 55th minute.

Tottenham plays Saturday against Liverpool in Baltimore and next Tuesday against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena.

The Galaxy have a friendly Aug. 2 at home against Spanish champion Real Madrid.

When you start up EasyRecovery Professional, it displays a user-friendly wizard interface. You start by choosing the kind of device you want to explore?a hard drive, a "memory device" (typically a USB key), optical media, a mobile device or MP3 player, or a RAID system?though the RAID option only leads to a dialog telling you that you need a different version of the software to use it. 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee probed for fire risk

U.S. safety regulators have opened defect investigations into Chrysler Group LLC's 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2009-2010 Dodge Ram 1500.

The National Highway Traffic Safey Administration said it is investigating potential power steering hose failures that could lead to under-hood fires in about 106,800 2012 Grand Cherokees.

NHTSA also is investing potential rear differential failures that could lead to rear wheel lock-up and loss of vehicle control in about 230,000 2009-2010 Dodge Ram 1500 pickups.

A NHTSA defect investigation is often a prelude to a vehicle safety recall.

NHTSA's Office of Defect Investigation said the power steering hose on the 2012 Grand Cherokee could fail, resulting in power steering fluid leakage in the engine compartment. It said the fluid "may be ignited by hot surfaces in the engine compartment."

In the Dodge Ram investigation, NHTSA said it had received 12 complaints of alleged rear differential failures resulting in rear wheel lock-up, including "one resulting in a crash into a concrete barrier."

Chrysler is an affiliate of Italy's Fiat SpA.

The Dodge Ram pickup?is Chrysler's top-selling vehicle this year. The Grand Cherokee is its?second-best seller.

The Ram is an important money maker for Chrysler Group LLC. The company sold almost 377,000 of the trucks in 2009 and 2010, but some of those sales were from other model years.

Chrysler spokesman Eric Mayne said any customers who are concerned about their vehicles should visit their dealers. He said the Ram and Grand Cherokee are extensively tested to ensure durability and safety.?

As it turns out though, this art theft is not as simple as his previous ones and Greve is not as buttoned up as he makes out. As this film opens we are introduced to unlikely leading actor Aksel Hennie who has an appearance that resembles the love child of Christopher Walken and Steve Buscemi. He's not your average leading man and his character is not that appealing either. He's a self-centred weasel of a man that seems to lack any morals but you know that things are, not entirely, going to go to plan for this scheming, double-crossing thief and that's exactly what captures your attention and provides the hook in this adaptation of Norwegian writer Jo Nesbo's novel. Director Morten Tyldum is wise enough to play his cards when he needs them and wrings out the suspense, masterfully, at every turn. He mounts the tension slowly before staging one gripping scene after another. The unpredictability of the spiralling plot delivers genuine excitement, helped immeasurably by natural characters and performers. Hennie in particular, is absolutely brilliant and will no doubt become a household name after this (apparently he already is, in his native Norway). Kudos to screenwriters Lars Gudmstead and Ulf Ryberg. It's their tight, deliberately paced and unpredictable script that keeps you guessing and shows a good level of intelligence. Admittedly, I haven't read the novel but if I were author Jo Nesbo, I'd be very proud of the job that has been done here. When the headhunter becomes the headhunted, this film grips like a vice and refuses to let go. I've seen quite a few film's from Scandinavia over recent years and have been very impressed with the high standard they are delivering. This is no exception and a thriller that will definitely compete with the best of the year.
