BOSTON (AP) ? Boston's longest-serving mayor, Thomas Menino, will formally announce that he won't be seeking re-election for a sixth term.
The popular Democratic mayor planned an announcement for 4 p.m. Thursday at Faneuil Hall.
A person with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed Menino's decision not to see re-election in November to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person wasn't authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The 70-year-old was re-elected to a fifth four-year term in 2009. He has recently faced a series of health problems but has remained popular with voters.
Menino was hospitalized for eight weeks in the fall after a respiratory infection and a blood clot that was complicated by a spinal fracture and diabetes.
His decision not to run for office again is expected to trigger a political scramble to replace him as a new generation of political figures eye the mayor's office.
City Councilor John Connolly announced his mayoral intentions last month, regardless of Menino's decision. But Menino had been considered a heavy favorite had he opted to run.
As recently as January, Menino delivered an upbeat assessment of the city during his annual state of the city address.
Menino used a cane to walk to the podium and spoke vigorously about his plans for Boston. At the time, Menino gave no indication of whether he'd decided to seek a sixth term this year.
"Our progress is real. Our future is bright. The state of our city is striking, sound and strong," he said in prepared remarks that cited progress on economic development and crime reduction.
On Tuesday, Menino appeared at a rally at Boston City Hall plaza to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act. The previous day, he delivered a speech to the Boston Municipal Research Bureau in which he said he had never been more confident about the city and announced several new development projects and initiatives.
Menino became acting mayor after his predecessor, Raymond Flynn, left office in 1993 after being named ambassador to the Vatican. Menino, then president of the City Council, was automatically elevated to the mayor's job.
The circumstances prompted some critics to label him the "accidental mayor," a charge the sometimes-thin-skinned Menino was quick to reject. But he was elected mayor in his own right in November 1993 and won re-election by wide margins in 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2009.
The city's previous longest serving mayor, the late Kevin White, was in office for four terms, from 1968 to 1984.
Menino's longevity also exceeded the legendary Mayor James Michael Curley, who also served four terms, but not consecutively.
Menino built his reputation by focusing on the unglamorous nuts and bolts of running a major metropolitan city ? fixing potholes, cleaning streets, even curbing the practice of saving a shoveled-out parking space by putting folding chairs or trash cans along the curb.
It's everyday commitments like those that earned him the nickname of the "Urban Mechanic."
The 2004 Democratic National Convention put Menino's political and negotiating skills to the test when the city's main police union threatened to picket over an unresolved contract.
It was only with the last minute help of other politicians, including Republican Gov. Mitt Romney, that a contract was reached in the early morning hours the day before the convention opened in the city.
During his years in office, Menino also became a vigorous national voice in favor of stricter gun control measures.
He co-founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and criticized the National Rifle Association's call for more armed guards at schools after the Connecticut school shooting in December.
"That is crazy," Menino said. "Every victim of gun violence and their families knows that's crazy."
Menino also built a reputation for creating an impressive political machine that handily defeated challengers.
Last year, Menino also played a crucial role in helping elect U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, campaigning with her at stops across the city.

Andrew Knights, the musician in charge of 'Music Unlocking Memories' sessions, is holding an open music session to help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's Society.
'The best day of the week', 'they walk in with their heads low, they walk out with their heads held high' ? comments that can be heard after every music session organised by Alzheimer's Society in the New Forest area from participants and volunteers.
As part of Andrew's fundraising for the London Marathon on 21 April he has kindly decided to organise an open session at the Milford on Sea Music Group which will be open to the public. The event will be held on Wednesday 29 May from 2-5pm at Milford on Sea Community Centre.

In fact I?ve been recommending Google Reader to all my clients and in any courses or talks I do, on any element of online marketing, because content creation and coming up with ideas for content on a regular basis is important in getting visitors to your site and building community on all of your online marketing channels, especially social media.
Not too long ago, I read that Google was probably going to shut down Google Reader and many were forcasting the death of RSS, but it wasn?t until 13th March 2013 that Google confirmed that Google Reader will be retired on July 1st 2013.
I shouldn?t be surprised because the majority of the people I mention Google Reader to haven?t heard of it, and have no clue what an RSS feed is.
RSS stands for ?rich site summary? or ?really simple syndication?, depending on which source you follow. RSS is data generated from a website, as a ?feed?, with the most recent content in a format, either. rss or .xml, so that this fresh content can be sent out to subscribers, search engines and applications to provide an aggregation of recently published articles.
RSS feeds have been commonly available on news sites and blogs for years, but are available on most sites these days as more and more sites are developed with content management systems (CMS), like WordPress or Joomla, that generate an RSS feed by default or using a standard add-on.
Many sites promote their RSS feeds with a link using either the RSS icon (see right; the icon may be other shapes or colours) or just the text ?subscribe?. When you click on the link you can choose to subscribe via a number of applications such as feed readers (like Google Reader), news aggregators (like My Yahoo or NewsGator) or email. Some sites also allow you to subscribe to comments left on the site.

With a Feed reader you can view all of the most recent content in one place, not mixed in with other comments and posts by your friends, at the time you want to. ?On social media channels the news feed moves along during the day and you will miss new content posted when you are not online. Most feed readers/aggregators have tools so that you can share the links on your social media channels. (See the Flipboard screenshot above.)
An RSS feed for your own site is the easiest way to get your newest content pushed out to search engines and other sites and social media channels as quickly, and easily, as possible.
If you are using any of the popular content management systems, like WordPress, your site will have an RSS feed by default. ?The default feed is often very basic so you may want to use a feed management application, like Google?s Feedburner, which allows you to offer subscriptions via email, to show a formatted version of your feed on other sites, etc.
With the demise of Reader, many are wondering when Feedburner will be retired as well. NEW YORK (AP) ? Veteran newsman Ted Koppel, who reports on Friday's "Rock Center" about young offenders in adult prisons, said NBC hasn't done Brian Williams and his young newsmagazine any favors with its scheduling shuffles.
The show debuted on Halloween 2011 and now airs on Friday after previously being on NBC's schedule for Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
"Just when you think somebody might figure out when it's on and want to see it the next week, they move it to another place," said the former "Nightline" anchor. "That's not helpful, and I think Brian deserves more support than that."
He said Williams is "a powerhouse of a guy, and I think he's going to emerge triumphant in the end."
"Rock Center" has been averaging 3.8 million viewers a year this season, although it recorded less than 2.8 million last week in its Friday at 10 p.m. time slot, the Nielsen company said.
Koppel does about four or five stories a year for "Rock Center," in addition to some writing, work at National Public Radio and lecturing.
His story on Friday talks about thousands of youngsters placed in solitary confinement in adult prisons. They're sent to these prisons out of a public desire to see people who commit adult crimes punished like adults. To protect them against violence and sexual predators in prison, they're kept apart from the general population.
But being placed in solitary confinement creates its own set of problems, Koppel said. His story focuses on the experiences of Kevin Demott, a Michigan man with mental health issues who attempted armed robbery at age 13 and was kept in solitary for many months.
"I'd been interested in prison-related stories for a long time, and I had no idea we had so many kids in adult facilities," Koppel said.
Despite NBC's ratings problems, network TV still carries plenty of power to get the issue in front of people, he said.
"If a couple of million people end up seeing this piece on Friday night, and 1 percent may be moved to do something about it and say, 'this is crazy, we've got to get these children out of prison...,' then hallelujah, God bless the network."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The top U.S. military commander in Europe said Tuesday that several NATO countries are working on contingency plans for possible military action to end the two-year civil war in Syria as President Bashar Assad's regime accused U.S.-backed Syrian rebels of using chemical weapons.
The Obama administration rejected the Assad claim as a sign of desperation by a besieged government intent on drawing attention from its war atrocities ? some 70,000 dead, more than 1 million refugees and 2.5 million people internally displaced. A U.S. official said there was no evidence that either Assad forces or the opposition had used chemical weapons in an attack in northern Syria.
As the war enters its third year, the U.S. military, State Department officials and the U.N. high commissioner for refugees delivered a dire assessment of a deteriorating situation in Syria and the sober view that even if Assad leaves, the Middle East nation could slip into civil strife similar to the Balkans in the 1990s.
"The Syrian situation continues to become worse and worse and worse," Adm. James Stavridis, the commander of U.S. European Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. "No end in sight to a vicious civil war."
Stavridis, who is retiring soon, said a number of NATO nations are looking at a variety of military operations to end the deadlock and assist the opposition forces, including using aircraft to impose a no-fly zone, providing military assistance to the rebels and imposing arms embargoes.
As with U.S. and international involvement in Libya in 2011, a resolution from the U.N. Security Council and agreement among the alliance's 28 members would be necessary before NATO assumes a military role in Syria, Stavridis said.
"We are prepared if called upon to be engaged as we were in Libya," he said.
But within individual member countries, the admiral said, "there's a great deal of discussion" about lethal support to Syria, no-fly zones, arms embargoes and more. "It is moving individually within the nations, but it has not yet come into NATO as an overall NATO-type approach," he said.
Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., asked whether there is any consideration of targeting Syria's air defenses. Stavridis simply said yes.
NATO has installed Patriot missile defense batteries in southern Turkey along the border with Syria that are also capable of shooting down aircraft. During an exchange with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Stavridis said the Patriots could be positioned in such a way as to shoot down Syrian aircraft, and he indicated that doing so would be a powerful disincentive for pilots to fly in that area.
Turkey's leaders have been "very emphatic" that the missiles be used only for defensive purposes, Stavridis said. To use the batteries for other missions, including attacking Syrian military aircraft, would require consensus among NATO's members ? "and we're far from that," Stavridis told the committee.
Stavridis said that his personal opinion is that providing military assistance to the Syrian opposition "would be helpful in breaking the deadlock and bringing down the Assad regime."
Syria's state-run news agency said 25 people were killed in a chemical attack on the Khan al-Assad village in northern Aleppo province. It said 86 people were wounded, some critically, and published pictures of children and others on stretchers in what appeared to be a hospital ward.
Russia, which has steadfastly supported Assad in Syria's civil war, on Tuesday backed Assad's assertion of a chemical attack.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said the U.S. is looking carefully at all allegations but that the Obama administration is "deeply skeptical" of any claims emanating from Assad's regime.
Denis McDonough, the White House chief of staff, said the U.S. wouldn't stand by if it turns out the regime used chemical weapons, but he declined to say whether he believed the reports could be true.
"If this is substantiated, it does suggest ... that this is a game-changer. And we will act accordingly," McDonough told CNN. "This is something we take very, very seriously."
The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., said he thought there was a "high probability" the Assad government had used chemical weapons, although it was not clear whether he was referring to the attack in northern Syria. "We need that final verification, but given everything we know over the last year and a half, I would come to the conclusion that they are either positioned for use, and ready to do that, or in fact have been used," Rogers told CNN.
Syria has one of the world's largest arsenals of chemical weapons and Washington has been on high alert since last year for any possible use or transfer of chemical weapons by Assad's forces. It feared that an increasingly desperate regime might turn to the stockpiles in a bid to defeat the rebellion or transfer dangerous agents to militant groups such as Lebanon's Hezbollah, which the Syrian government has long supported.
At the time, officials noted movement of some of the Syrian stockpiles but said none appeared to be deployed for imminent use. Still, President Barack Obama declared the use, deployment or transfer of the weapons to be his "red line" for possible military intervention in the Arab country.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a member of the Armed Services Committee, raised the prospect of deploying U.S. troops to Syria to secure the stockpile of chemical weapons.
"If the choice is to send in troops to secure the weapons sites versus allowing chemical weapons to get into the hands of some of the most violent people in the world, I vote to cut this off before it's a problem," Graham told a group of reporters. "This administration's handling of Syria is going to cause incredible problems in the Mideast and compromise our national security."
But another member of the committee, Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., said the United States "should take every step that we can short of boots on the ground."
At a separate congressional hearing, Ant?nio Guterres, the U.N. high commissioner for refugees, said the international community faces a "tipping point" in Syria, with a fast-moving refugee crisis.
The number of refugees arriving in neighboring countries has jumped to 14,000 in a 24-hour period, up from 3,000 in December, 5,000 in January and 8,000 in February, Guterres said. Lebanon has 360,000 registered Syrians, Jordan more than 350,000 and Turkey some 260,000.
"The refugee crisis has been accelerating since last summer, and has reached staggering proportions since the beginning of this year," Guterres told a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee. He said the world community needs "to be prepared for things to get worse before they get better."
After Assad falls, Syria could end up like the Balkans, Stavridis told the Armed Services panel.
"We saw in the Balkans 100,000 killed, 1 million people, 2 million people pushed across borders, (and) two significant wars, one in Bosnia, Herzegovina, one in Serbia, Kosovo," Stavridis said. "I think, unfortunately, that's probably the future in Syria. It's going to be after the Assad regime falls. I think, there's going to be every potential for a great deal of revenge killing, interreligious conflict between various segments of the population, and it's very difficult to see the pieces of Syria going back together again very easily."
The violent, unending war has prompted some in Congress to offer legislation and demand greater action by the Obama administration. But a war-weary American public has been slow to embrace many of the efforts.
In the latest proposal, Sens. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., offered a bipartisan measure that would provide non-lethal aid to vetted Syrian opposition groups battling the Assad regime, such as body armor and communications equipment.
Casey and Rubio left open the possibility of arming the rebels at a later date.
"Down the road we may make another determination," Casey said when asked about arming the rebels.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greek authorities say police are lobbing chemicals inside a central prison, trying to smoke out a convicted murderer who is holding five hostages.
Alket Rizaj, an Albanian who has escaped from prison twice already, has been locked in tense negotiations with police for nearly 18 hours. Authorities say he is demanding a getaway car.
Officials in Greece's justice ministry also said Sunday that Rizaj is holding five hostages at the central Malandrino prison, with another having either escaped or been released. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.
They also said Rizaj claims to have explosives, guns and a grenade.

Predictability is often used synonymously with "boring," as in that story or that outcome was soooo predictable. For practioners of synthetic biology seeking to engineer valuable new microbes, however, predictability is the brass ring that must be captured. Researchers with the multi-institutional partnership known as BIOFAB have become the first to grab at least a portion of this ring by unveiling a package of public domain DNA sequences and statistical models that greatly increase the reliability and precision by which biological systems can be engineered.
The DNA sequences produced by BIOFAB provide precise control of gene expression in Escherichia coli, the rod-shaped bacterium that is one of the principal model organisms for genetic engineering. While these DNA sequences serve as standardized parts specific to E. coli, they also provide a set of rules for how the sequences fit together that should apply to other microbes as well. Controlling the expression of genes is essential for engineering a microbe to produce a specific product or carry out a specific function.
As BIOFAB co-director Adam Arkin, a computational biologist and director of Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division, has noted, "Fulfilling the great promise of synthetic biology hinges on making the design and construction of biological systems as predictable as the assembly of computer hardware."
Yet even with a microbe as well-characterized and understood as E. coli, the introduction of new genes has in the past been met with as much failure as success.
"You would think after a generation of genetic engineering, expressing genes with precision in an organism as well utilized as E. coli would be pretty straightforward but it's not," says BIOFAB's other co-director Drew Endy, a synthetic biologist at Stanford University.
Arkin and Endy are the corresponding authors of a pair of research papers published simultaneously in the journal Nature Methods, and a third to be published in Nucleic Acids Research, that collectively describe this major BIOFAB breakthrough.
BIOFAB's success is based on two major achievements - the design of independent DNA promoter and ribosome binding site sequences for specific E. coli genes, and the development of mathematical models that provide rules for engineering gene expression that should be applicable to nearly all organisms. This work establishes a much-needed technological foundation for the field of synthetic biology, which in turn should facilitate more precise and predictable genetic engineering in the future.

Pope Francis? legion of new admirers includes a perhaps unlikely figure: a rabbi living along the Mississippi River.
Like the new world leader, Rabbi Henry Jay Karp has just one healthy lung.
?There?s a kinship, because when you lose basically the use of one lung, it does change your life perspective to a certain degree,? said Karp, 63, a Bronx native who has presided over the Temple Emanuel synagogue in Davenport, Iowa, for nearly three decades.
Losing major lung capacity can do one of two things, he said. It can lead you to fold into yourself and look at all the things you can?t do and be afraid to do things. Or it can present you with a challenge.
In the case of Pope Francis, 76 ? formerly known as?Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, whose lung was reportedly removed when he was a teenager after an infection ? the path he chose is unmistakable, he said.
?One lung or two lungs, it?s very clear that Pope Francis has led a life of speaking out, speaking out for the poor, for those in need and for justice,? Karp, who writes a blog called ?Reflections of an Iowa Rabbi,? told ABCNews.com.? ?He has a good deal of breath to carry the message of justice forward, and that?s inspiring.?

Karp was diagnosed as having a dysfunctional diaphragm in 2010 after he started getting short of breath, he said. At first he thought the cause was his asthma. After a summer of tests, though, doctors realized a virus had destroyed the nerve to his left diaphragm.
Surgeons at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota ?sewed down? his diaphragm to make room for his left lung to be reinflated, and now his left lung is functioning but at a very low level, he said. Karp works with a trainer twice a week to help develop surrounding muscles so he can make the most of his healthy lung, he said.
Doctors may have removed the lung of the Vatican?s new leader for a number of reasons: tuberculosis, whooping cough, complications from pneumonia, or because of a congenital lung defect the pope may have been born with that later caused an infection, Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., told ABCNews.com yesterday.
In terms of daily life, Karp said he gets breathless when he carries around the Torah during services. He can?t walk fast, which can affect travel plans.
?When you fly out of a place like Iowa, there are few direct flights,? he said. ?I don?t take tight connections so I can get to the gate and still breathe,? he said.
Living with one lung doesn?t usually affect people?s daily life or life expectancy, said Dr. Len Horovitz, an attending physician in internal and pulmonary medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Just look at the new pope.
?He?s been living with one lung for 60 years,? Horovitz told ABCNews.com. ?He?s already gotten pretty much to the life expectancy of an American man.?
Doctors have been performing pneumonectomies ? removing lungs ? for about that long, or 70 years, he said. Afterward the healthy lung normally expands somewhat, he said.
A missing lung really only affects a sufferer?s ability to exercise, yet even running a marathon technically wouldn?t hurt the existing lung, he said.
The links between Karp and Pope Francis don?t stop at lung issues or even being a member of the clergy. Karp teaches theology at Saint Ambrose University in Davenport, a Catholic school.
Recently he worried about taking students on a major field trip to Eastern Europe, he said. He managed to overcome his fear, however, he said.
He recalled thinking, ?I can?t do this trip. How am I going to be able to schlep around concentration camps?? he said. ?But I said, ?No, I?ll pace myself. And I did that trip.?

Mar. 13, 2013 ? A joint expedition of scientists led by Chapurukha M. Kusimba of The Field Museum and Sloan R. Williams of the University of Illinois at Chicago has unearthed a 600-year-old Chinese coin on the Kenyan island of Manda that shows trade existed between China and east Africa decades before European explorers set sail and changed the map of the world.
The coin, a small disk of copper and silver with a square hole in the center so it could be worn on a belt, is called "Yongle Tongbao" and was issued by Emperor Yongle who reigned from 1403-1425AD during the Ming Dynasty. The emperor's name is written on the coin, making it easy to date. Emperor Yongle, who started construction of China's Forbidden City, was interested in political and trade missions to the lands that ring the Indian Ocean and sent Admiral Zheng He, also known as Cheng Ho, to explore those shores.
"Zheng He was, in many ways, the Christopher Columbus of China," said Dr. Kusimba, curator of African Anthropology at The Field Museum. "It's wonderful to have a coin that may ultimately prove he came to Kenya," he added.
Dr. Kusimba continued, "This finding is significant. We know Africa has always been connected to the rest of the world, but this coin opens a discussion about the relationship between China and Indian Ocean nations."
That relationship stopped soon after Emperor Yongle's death when later Chinese rulers banned foreign expeditions, allowing European explorers to dominate the Age of Discovery and expand their countries' empires.
The island of Manda, off the northern coast of Kenya, was home to an advanced civilization from about 200AD to 1430AD, when it was abandoned and never inhabited again. Trade played an important role in the development of Manda, and this coin may show trade's importance on the island dating back to much earlier than previously thought.
"We hope this and future expeditions to Manda will play a crucial role in showing how market-based exchange and urban-centered political economies arise and how they can be studied through biological, linguistic, and historical methodologies," Dr. Kusimba said.

Mar. 12, 2013 ? Mouse model studies show that administered genetically or topically, protein Smad7 protects against or heals mouth sores commonly associated with cancer treatment.
In some cancer patients treated with radiation, the mouth sores known as oral mucositis become so severe that feeding tubes are required for nutrition and narcotics are needed for pain. In fact, 40-70 percent of patients treated with upper-body radiation develop the condition to some degree. Currently, there is no FDA approved treatment. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published this week in the journal Nature Medicine takes an important step toward changing that.
"We developed a genetically engineered mouse that produces a protein called Smad7 in the surface layers of its mouth. With this protein expressed, mouse models were dramatically more resistant to the development of oral mucositis than were controls," says Xiao-Jing Wang, PhD, CU Cancer Center investigator and John S. Gates endowed Chair of Cancer Stem Cell Biology at the Charles C. Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Biology.
Wang and collaborators including Qinghong Zhang, PhD, Yosef Refaeli, PhD, and radiation oncologist David Raben, MD, are pursuing further research with the goal of developing Smad7 as a therapeutic agent for human oral mucositis. For example, the group joined Smad7 in with a short peptide that allows the protein to cross through cell membranes, and produced this combination protein from cultured bacteria. When they applied the engineered compound directly to the mouse oral cavity, it both protected against the development of oral mucositis and worked to heal existing ulcers. Importantly, it revived wounded normal cells but not cancer cells, avoiding a major problem of growth factors currently used to promote the cell growth that heals ulcers.
"It's very reasonable to hope that this line of research will result in a drug that patients can self-administer topically to oral mucositis sores, or use to prevent them altogether, thus significantly improving the quality of life for many cancer patients," Wang ways.
Additionally, Wang points out that the mouse model engineered to develop human-like oral mucositis in the presence of radiation treatment is a useful tool for studying the disease -- offering opportunities to search for biomarkers and test experimental therapies.

Stern, currently a radio personality and judge on the NBC show ?America?s Got Talent,? could take the spot currently occupied by the former ?Saturday Night Live? cast member if NBC relieves "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno and replaces him with Fallon, according to the New York Post.
?Sources close to the radio man tell The Post that Stern, in turn, is being ?groomed? by NBC as the new Fallon,? the Post article read.
It?s not a sure thing that Fallon would replace Leno, either ? the Hollywood Reporter stated that a source told them the network was planning to remove the longtime ?Tonight Show? host in favor of Fallon, but so far, NBC is denying the story.?
Nevertheless, the source told the Hollywood Reporter that NBC may believe it can handily beat ABC night host Jimmy Kimmel if Fallon?s show was going head-to-head with the program instead of the close battle that always ensues between Kimmel and Leno for ratings.
?Kimmel has done extremely well," the source said. "Jay wins overall, but on any given night, it's neck-and-neck in 18-49. I understand where they might have fear and also feel that they own the solution.?
Leno has hosted ?The Tonight Show? since 1992 except for a brief break in 2009 when the comedian left to be the face of ?The Jay Leno Show.? Leno and the new ?Tonight Show? host Conan O?Brien became the center of controversy when it was reported that NBC wanted to move ?The Jay Leno Show? to the timeslot formerly occupied by ?The Tonight Show? and move ?Tonight? to a midnight air time. O?Brien wrote a letter stating that he would leave the network if the move was enacted, and after he left, Leno became the host of ?Tonight? again.

Mar. 7, 2013 ? The star Eta Carinae is ready to blow. 170 years ago, this 100-solar-mass object belched out several suns' worth of gas in an eruption that made it the second-brightest star after Sirius. That was just a precursor to the main event, since it will eventually go supernova.
Supernova explosions of massive stars are common in spiral galaxies like the Milky Way, where new stars are forming all the time. They are almost never seen in elliptical galaxies where star formation has nearly ceased. As a result, astronomers were surprised to find a young-looking supernova in an old galaxy. Supernova PS1-12sk, discovered with the Pan-STARRS telescope on Haleakala, is rare in more ways than one.
"This supernova is one-of-a-kind," said Nathan Sanders of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), lead author of the discovery paper. "And it's definitely in the wrong neighborhood."
Based on the presence of helium and other features, PS1-12sk is classified as a very rare Type Ibn supernova -- only the sixth such example found out of thousands of supernovae. Although the origin of this supernova type is unclear, the most likely cause seems to be the explosion of a massive star that previously ejected massive amounts of helium gas, much like Eta Carinae's Homunculus Nebula.
That origin was supported by the fact that the five previous Type Ibn supernovae were all found in galaxies like the Milky Way that are actively forming stars. (Since massive stars don't live long, they don't stray far from where they are born before exploding.)
PS1-12sk is different. It was found on the outskirts of a bright elliptical galaxy located about 780 million light-years from Earth. The site of the explosion shows no signs of recent star formation, and a supernova from a massive star has never before been seen in a galaxy of this type.
"It could be that we simply got very lucky with this discovery. But luck favors the prepared," said second author Alicia Soderberg of the CfA.
The finding suggests that the host galaxy might be hiding a star factory, allowing it to form massive stars where none were expected. Alternatively, PS1-12sk might have an entirely different origin such as a collision of two white dwarfs, one of which was helium-rich.
"Is this a runaway star from another star formation site? Is it a very local bit of star formation? Is it a different way for such a supernova to occur? None of these seems very likely so we have a real puzzle," said co-author John Tonry (University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy).
The research has been submitted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.

DENVER (Reuters) - Prosecutors in the case against accused Colorado movie theater gunman James Holmes urged a judge to reject a defense motion to declare the state's insanity defense law unconstitutional, court filings released on Wednesday show.
Last week, attorneys for Holmes asked Arapahoe County District Judge William Sylvester to declare Colorado's insanity defense law unconstitutional because it compels defendants who enter insanity pleas to cooperate with court-appointed psychiatrists.
That scenario could force Holmes to provide potentially incriminating statements that could be used against him not only at trial but in sentencing should he be convicted, defense lawyers argued.
Prosecutors countered, in their response made public on Wednesday, that federal and state courts had both upheld the legality of laws that require those who raise an insanity defense to submit to mental-health examinations, because there are other remedies available to preserve a defendant's rights.
"It is well established law in Colorado that submitting to court ordered evaluation does not violate a defendant's Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination," the prosecution motion said.
Holmes, 25, is scheduled to enter a plea next week, but the flurry of pleadings in the case puts that date in doubt.
He is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder for a shooting spree last July in which 12 moviegoers were killed and 58 others wounded during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" Batman movie in Aurora, Colorado.
Holmes, a former University of Colorado neuroscience graduate student, was bound over for trial in January after a three-day preliminary hearing in which prosecutors presented evidence that the California native spent months plotting the mass killing.
Prosecutors have 60 days after a plea is entered to announce whether they will seek the death penalty.
Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler said last month that he had added a death penalty lawyer to the prosecution team, indicating he was considering going after capital punishment in the case.
Legal analyst Craig Silverman, who has followed the case closely, said defense lawyers would put out scores of motions hoping that an appellate issue would surface that could keep their client off death row.
"These motions are all mini-insurance policies in case there is a death penalty verdict," said Silverman, a former Denver prosecutor. "But there's no guarantee that any of them will work."
