A decent weekend diversion, this IMAX documentary is cute enough to engage your kids, while teaching them the most basic lessons in ecological responsibility.
Their stories are touching and inspiring, but let's face it, the visuals are what make this movie. Born to be Wild takes you to places you've never been and makes you wish you had.
The hip soundtrack adds momentum, and the reassuring narration of Morgan Freeman lets us know these lucky orphans will have a fighting chance for survival after taking their first steps -- or swings -- back into the wild.
Given the sheer scale of the format, Imax provides an ideal context in which to experience 3D, allowing the eyes to wander about each periphery-filling frame and focus on whatever catches our interest, the way we do in the real world.
While there's an important story here - how these two women take in endangered animals with the intention of later releasing them back into the wild - the main attraction is the general adorableness.
It's sort of poetic justice that the wretched "Sucker Punch" is getting kicked off four Manhattan IMAX screens after just two weeks by this charming nature documentary.
Few will be unmoved by the two women's courage and persistence, though Morgan Freeman's intoning voiceover is less persuasive.
A nice family outing, this, but those after an in-depth discussion had better look elsewhere.
It's just 40 minutes long, but in that short time it produces more "awwww" moments than any feature-length film to hit theaters this year.

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Morgan Freeman's voice.
I'm a fan of the diorama approach [to 3D], but Born to Be Wild makes the case that a nature documentary in IMAX 3D can and perhaps should bring us as close to the action as possible.
David Lickely's work as a director is impressive and intimate, and the use of the 3D helps make it feel like you're there in the environments with these animals.
What it lacks in length, the 45-minute movie makes up in entertainment value.
This may make me sound like less of a man, but I'm going to say it anyway: Born to Be Wild is by far the most adorable movie I've seen in the theater in a long time.
This enthralling 3D IMAX documentary about animal activists and naturalists in Borneo and Kenya and the orphaned baby orangutans and elephants they rescue is a must-see for animal lovers of all ages.
A cute and touching look at animals in peril and the dedicated humans who care for them.

Mexico voters choose governor, give hints for 2012 (AP)
ECATEPEC, Mexico ? There's more at stake Sunday than picking a governor in the state of Mexico, with 15 million people the country's most populous state and a bellwether for next year's presidential election.
Eruviel Avila heads into the closely watched vote with a 30 percentage point lead for the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which has never lost the governorship in more than 80 years. But the PRI needs a commanding victory to create momentum going into the July 2012 national election, where it wants to regain the presidency it lost in 2000 after 71 years of uninterrupted rule.
The front-runner in presidential polls, Enrique Pena Nieto, is the current PRI governor of Mexico state, home to the sprawling, impoverished suburbs that ring Mexico City.
The other two major parties, trailing in the polls and lacking the coalitions that have beat the PRI in other states, are warning voters that backing the PRI is backing a return to the past, when the "dinosaurs" wielded power through coercion, corruption and intimidation.
Avila faces Alejandro Encinas, 57, from the leftist Democratic Revolution Party, or PRD, which won the presidential vote in the state of Mexico in 2006 despite PRI domination of state and local offices. Trailing third is Luis Felipe Bravo Mena, 58, of Calderon's conservative National Action Party, or PAN, which won the presidential vote there in 2000.
The PAN and PRD tried early on to form a coalition to defeat the PRI, as they did last year to win the PRI stronghold states of Oaxaca, Puebla and Sinaloa. But the agreement fell apart in Mexico state, and other coalition efforts never got off the ground in two other states, Nayarit and Coahuila, where the PRI is expected to win governorships Sunday.
Across Mexico, many voters are weary of the PAN, which after more than a decade in power has failed to make fundamental changes in Mexico apart from a trademark war on organized crime that has seen a spike in violence. Since President Felipe Calderon took office in late 2006, more than 35,000 people have died in drug violence, according to the government. Other sources put the number at more than 40,000.
And internal fighting in the PRD has left the leftist party in disarray.
The PRI has sprung back in the vacuum.
After mounting one of the most expensive campaigns in Mexico's history, Avila ran tirelessly as a "democrat," polling near 60 percent while Encinas' support has hovered in the mid-to-high 20s in surveys by the newspapers Reforma and El Universal. Those polls have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The newspaper Reforma reported last month that Avila's campaign spent nearly 4.4 million pesos a day ($376,000), more than the 3.4 million pesos ($290,000) Calderon spent to win the presidency. The campaign didn't respond to questions about spending from the AP.
Even as the opposing parties cry foul and have filed complaints with the national elections tribunal over alleged PRI campaign violations, the elections Sunday and next year appear to be the PRI's to lose.

Apple the Latest Target of Hackers (Mashable)
Hacker group Anonymous claims it has hacked one of Apple's servers and posted usernames and passwords to prove it on their Twitter account, together with a warning that Apple could be a target of one of their attacks. "Not being so serious, but well (...) #Apple could be target, too. But don't worry, we are busy elsewhere", Pastebin which apparently contains the user names and passwords from an SQL database table on one of Apple's servers.

The site in question (currently offline) is an Apple Business Intelligence website, and the database is related to a survey on the site.
While it's unlikely that this hack will cause much damage to Apple (the passwords are encrypted), it's a warning to Apple that, as a high-profile corporation, it is not safe from the recent onslaught of hacking attacks from Anonymous members and affiliated groups.

Roughly at the same time as Anonymous's tweet, a Lebanese hacker named Idahc Apple Consultants Network server, but he did not publicly release user names, emails or passwords from the hack.
An Apple spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
