Also, Dr. Smith is one of few local dentists with special training in sedation dentistry ? so if you?ve been putting dental work off because of fear or anxiety, he can help you get through the experience in comfort and with ease. Week 2 Team Updates:

THE BIG BUTT THEORY (Amy and Linsey)

  • % of goal weight loss achieved week 2: 7% Though this number isn?t as high as the team would like, both ladies have been working out and eating well for a number of weeks, so they feel they are at a plateau, which is making losing weight a bit more challenging. That said, the weight lost this week takes Amy to her overall 20 lbs lost milestone (since Mother?s Day) which is awesome!
  • What they?ve been doing this week: The ladies have been swimming and doing Jillian Michael?s 30 Day Shred workout this week.
  • How they?re feeling: They?re feeling ok, but are kind of down about the rut/plateau
  • Snack suggestion: ?A great snack is turning plain Greek yogurt into a ranch dip and eating it with veggies. The plain Greek yogurt is very similar to sour cream, but less calories and TONS of protein, so it keeps you fuller longer.?

  • % of goal weight loss achieved week 2: 42%
  • What they?ve been doing this week: The ladies are still eating clean, un-processed food and drinking lots of water. Daily activity is contributing to their success as well. Krystin went on a family vacation during the week and still managed to lose weight!

The healthy changes we are making are really starting to become part of our new routines, which lends itself naturally to helping our entire families grow healthy habits. It?s a great feeling as a mom, to know you are setting healthy examples of nutritious eating and regular exercise for your kiddos.

  • How they?re feeling: Sarah is feeling amazing after such successful weight loss and Ady is feeling a little down, but is trying to turn that into more motivation to be stricter about what she is putting into her body.
  • Snack suggestion: Ady is really enjoying eating fruits and nuts mixed with peanut butter. Some of the things she has paired with peanut butter: Celery, apple, nectarine, pear, granola, walnuts, almonds, and she even popcorn. All of which she found very tasty and filling.

Legal Theory Blog: Galoob & Li on Legal Ethics & Ordinary Morality ...

Stephen Galoob (University of California, Berkeley - Jurisprudence and Social Policy Program) & Su Li (University of California, Berkely - Center for the Study of Law and Society) have posted Are Legal Ethics Ethical? - A Survey Experiment on SSRN. Here is the abstract:

The relationship between ordinary morality and professional rules of conduct lies at the core of legal ethics. Do these two schema diverge? Is the lawyer's role morally distinctive? Do professional norms determine what the lawyer has most reason to do? Assumptions and conjectures about these questions underpin nearly all debates about legal ethics. This Article provides the first systematic, empirical examination of these questions. We find that legal ethics rules about advocacy and confidentiality diverge from lay moral judgments; that lay moral judgments do not generally assign distinctive significance to the lawyer?s role; and that norms of professional conduct influence (but do not fully determine) lay judgments about the moral status of a lawyer?s actions. We discuss some theoretical and policy implications of these findings.

Very interesting & recommended.

[Preview] Arts & Draughts at the Columbia Museum of Art - Scene SC

Not often is a museum the place to be on a Friday night, but this week is a notable exception as the popular Arts & Draughts series returns to the Columbia Museum of Art, from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Shannon Burke, the museum?s Public Programs Coordinator, started the event as an effort to highlight a space that might otherwise be overlooked as a potential venue or hip hangout. Since the first installment in January 2011, Arts & Draughts has evolved into a quarterly gathering where patrons of culture can get a dose of craft beers and live music, surrounded by a fantastic collection of fine art.

The musical entertainment will commence with DJ Matt Porter, who will spin some vinyl from his vast, eclectic collection of vintage records. After the DJ set, two South Carolina bands will take the stage, courtesy the folks here at SceneSC.

(c) Andrew Harris

Elonzo at The Radio Room in Greenville, 7/20/12

Elonzo, hailing from Rock Hill, will be first to follow the DJ set. I?ve seen them multiple times, and each experience has been better than the one before. Their blend of folk, blues, and southern rock has matured nicely over the years, like a fine bourbon in a smoky wooden barrel.

Next in line is Brave Baby, a Charleston band whose sound evokes the early days of Band Of Horses, former indie darlings of the Palmetto State. It won?t be long before Brave Baby?s combination of passionate lyrics and emphatic downbeats elevates them to similar heights.

The Whiskey Gentry, from Atlanta, is the night?s final act. Their repertoire has everything from sombre, soul-searching hymns to classic barnburners with a fiddle player who must have cut his chops with the devil down in Georgia.

The Whiskey Gentry?s country crooning and bluegrass picking should pair well with this month?s featured brew, a signature wheat beer from the Widmer Brothers brewery of Portland, OR. The Hefeweizen features ?bold, clean flavor and pronounced citrus and floral aromas.? The beer and a cash bar will be provided by The Whig.

In addition to the music and booze, there will be a keepsake craft station and tours of the museum available.

HP Ambassador Campaign ? HP ePrint Challenge: Day 2 - PC ...

Summer is mostly the time when most activities are done indoors (unless you?re going to the beach). When my family members of mine arrived to spend the summer holidays with us, I took the time to do a simple activity that would we can enjoy and for our other family members who can?t make it.

Okay, so I thought why not do some sort of a game in which I can simply let them know which items to find. It was an idea suggested by my Mom saying that she needs quite a few pictures and images where she can add to the family scrapbook she is currently doing. I also suggested that our relatives can simply scan and send the images directly to our home printer so that she can collate all the images. She sounded excited ? and so am I.

I listed a few ideas and then scanned my document and sent them to each and every one of my family members using HP?s ePrint.

So I thought why not use these HP web-enabled printers to spread?the word about the challenge. That way, I can also include some relatives back home about the challenge. Luckily, they also have some HP web-enabled printers so no need for me to send a file for them to print ? I can simply send the directions directly to the printer so they would know.

First thing I have to do is send a list of things that my family members need to find using the HP printer. I made a simple list of things that they need ?to provide and send to our home printer. I gave my family the whole to finish the project. To make it interesting, the first ones to submit a complete photoset wins a prize.

One of my cousins in the Philippines emailed this collage he made of us. He sent it through my HP?s web-enabled printer via email and its started printing right away.

Sure enough, we?ve started receiving images from family members all over. I even have relatives from the US who joined in. HP definitely made these tasks easier with these web-enabled printers. Before, I usually have to connect the printer to a computer to start printing ? now, even without a computer, everything can be done in a jiffy.

Stay tuned as I present more challenges on the HP web-enabled printers.

Repost: Helpful Hints to Assure a Meaningful and Memorable Visit ...

By Patricia M Brown

1. First and foremost, be sure to follow American?s with Disabilities Act 1990/ADA (amended) accommodation recommendations. These recommendations are important to the safety and accessibility of your Blind and Visually Impaired individual. Be familiar with amended or updated ADA regulations.

2. Follow American?s with Disabilities Act 1990/ADA guidelines for Braille signage.

3. Consider a large print bound copy of your museum guide, pamphlets, handouts or educational materials. Large print materials may be offered as a print bound copy that is re-usable or as a ?Take Away? item that can be taken as a resource or reference item. Large print is usually considered 14-16 point print or larger (16 or 18 point print would be sufficient to assist many visually impaired individuals.) Materials should be presented in a high contrast and bold simple font on plain white background. Large print materials will assist many of your visually impaired visitors.

4. Be sure to offer good lighting on all print materials throughout your museum.

5. Consider offering museum guides, pamphlets, handouts or educational materials in Braille format. They may also be offered as re-usable bound Braille materials or as a ?Take Away? item that can be taken as a resource or reference item. Take-Away Braille educational materials are a particularly helpful reference/ resource for the student visitor. Braille materials would need pre-preparation by a Braille transcriber.

6. Be sure to greet your blind and visually impaired guest and offer specific information about the layout of your museum, specific exhibits and specialized accommodations available to them.

7. Directly address your blind guest instead of speaking ?through? their companions. Your blind & visually impaired guest will appreciate the consideration you have made to address their specific questions, familiarize them with your museum and help them to maximize their overall experience.

8. Museums offering school field trips/educational events for children benefit from prior notification of any Braille or large print accessibility requirements. Prior notification will allow ample time for preparation of materials. Full participation is the goal for the visually impaired/blind student. Educational materials/handouts require pre-preparation (by a Braille transcriber) in order to have materials transcribed/embossed into Braille.

9. Children sections should have at least one set of crayons labeled with Braille for easy identification. Even children that slowly lose their vision or become blind early in life enjoy arts & crafts. It is important to recognize that whatever the case, blind & visually impaired children also enjoy individualized creativity and the ability to choose their own colors. Having a set of Braille labeled crayons on hand will certainly say everything about your readiness to address blindness accommodations.

10. Children?s activities such as picture and coloring activities can be adapted to incorporate tactile-kinesthetic components using a tracing wheel (available in most sewing departments) or using tactual markings such as ?Wikki Stix? or dried glue to outline pictures. Ex: Using a tracing wheel to trace an insect or dinosaur picture (upside down) will result in a raised tactual outline for a blind student to actually follow. Use bold markers to outline pictures & coloring activities (for easier viewing) for the visually impaired child. Play Dough, clay and paper crimpers also add nice tactual components to art projects.

11. Encourage your blind & visually impaired visitors to actually explore exhibits and encourage your visually impaired visitor to view exhibits up close.

12. Be aware that your blind visitor may be using a guide dog. These dogs are specially trained dogs to do a specific job and are considered ?working dogs?. Staff should inquire with the blind individual on appropriate interaction with the dog.

13. Invest the time to inform your blind visitors about the various accommodations you have put in place for the blind population such as: Braille museum guide books, Braille pamphlets, Braille handouts and Braille ?take away items?, Braille menus, or specific machines marked or embossed in Braille such as: vending machines, soda machines or ATM?s?.

14. Consider offering Braille format for some of your museums most important historical sayings, quotes, or historical documents for your blind guest to refer to when navigating through your museum.

15. Braille and large print atlas & maps are available from specialized catalogues for blind & visually impaired individuals. If your exhibit includes maps be sure to remember that Braille maps may contribute nicely for the blind visitor.

16. Many Braille storybooks are already commercially available. So remember, if you have an exhibit of a famous American, inventor or famous woman in America such as Helen Keller or Amelia Earhart, it may already be available for purchase in Braille. A Braille transcriber/embosser can also Braille up Museum short stories or specific written materials used by your Museum.

17. Consider offering audio description of exhibits that are fragile, or visual in nature.

18. Tactual markers such as ?Maxi Marks?, ?Bump Dots?, ?Spot ?N Line? and ?Hi Marks? are tactual marking tools. They can be used to identify specific items or to mark specific interactive push button displays. They are available in different sizes, shapes and textures and are commercially available at product suppliers for the visually impaired and blind. Tactual markers should be used on a limited basis for specific identification purposes. Be sure to inform you blind & visually impaired visitor should you incorporate any of these specific tactual marker accommodations into your exhibits.

19. Remember that your blind visitor will spread the word should they experience a meaningful, informative and enjoyable visit to your museum.

20. Be sure to advertise your specialized accommodations whether large print or Braille on your website. Screen readers provide blind & visually impaired the ability to access website material and review accommodations available.

Rajiv Shah of USAID sees the way ahead on Aids and global health ...

By SarahBoseley

While USA administrator Rajiv Shah and secretary of state Hillary Clinton hailed an Aids-free future if all countries pull together, the UK failed to send a government minister to address the International Aids Conference in WashingtonAmidst the creative chaos that is the 25,000-delegate strong International Aids Conference in Washington DC last week, I spoke to the head of America?s development programme, Rajiv Shah, who has a very clear vision of where USAID is going and what it hopes to achieve. He appears to be a little concerned, however, that Europe may not keep pace ? particularly on the finance but perhaps also on the approach.Shah talks of health systems and integration, rather than single diseases and narrowly focused programmes. That was fine in the last decade, he said, but no longer. He cites his Child Survival Call to Action programme.
