DALLAS >> A freight train slammed into a parade float carrying wounded veterans today, killing four people and injuring 17 others as the float drove through a West Texas railroad crossing on its way to an honorary banquet, authorities said.

The eastbound train was sounding its horn before it hit the float around 4:40 p.m. in Midland, Union Pacific spokesman Tom Lange said. A preliminary investigation indicates the crossing gate and lights were working at the time, Lange said, though he didn't know if the train crew saw the float approaching.

Two people died at the scene of the crash, while two others died at Midland Memorial Hospital, City of Midland spokesman Ryan Stout said. Seven of those injured are in critical condition, while the 10 others are in stable condition, he said.

"There is going to be a very thorough investigation," Lange said. "It's obviously a very tragic incident."

Photos of the float taken during the parade show about two dozen people seated in chairs set up on the back of a flatbed tractor-trailer decorated with American flags and signs identifying each veteran. A banner across the truck's front bumper reads, "Heroes on Board."

The float was among two flat-bed trucks carrying veterans and their spouses, police said. The first truck safely crossed the railroad tracks, but the second truck's trailer was hit by the train. Police said some of the people on the second trailer were able to evacuate before the crash.

The parade was to end at a "Hunt for Heroes" banquet honoring the veterans. The wounded service members were then going to be treated to a deer-hunting trip this weekend. The events have been canceled.

Lange said Union Pacific is offering help to the community and victims' families, as well as peer-to-peer counseling for the train crew, who did not sustain any injuries.

"It's pretty traumatic for them," he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board also is investigating, NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson said.

Midland is about 320 miles west of Dallas.

Depending on whom you believe you can have as few as one credit score, and as many as hundreds of credit scores.?So who is telling the truth??The truth is they?re both right.?Follow me?

The apex predator in credit scoring is still your FICO credit score.?That?s not in dispute.?It?s by far the most commonly used credit scoring system so if you choose to focus on one brand of scores then it?s FICO hands down.?But you?ll need to be aware that there are 49 different FICO scores commercially available to lenders.? It can get maddening.?

You also have to consider your VantageScore credit score which is a relatively new scoring system backed by the three credit reporting agencies.?The range of the VantageScore credit score is 500-990 which overlaps, but doesn?t match FICO?s range of 300-850. Because the scaling overlaps there can be some confusion as to whether or not you?ve got a good credit score.?A FICO score of 750 is great while a 750 on the VantageScore scale is solidly average.

The use of those two scores account for the overwhelming majority of what?s referred to as credit bureau based risk scores.?But, they?re really just the tip of the iceberg.?You have countless other scores that you?ve never heard of and will likely never see.

Almost all mid size and large lenders use custom scoring systems.?A custom scoring system is just that, a custom developed credit score used by just one lender. Many of these scores use data from your credit applications (like income) and data from your credit reports.?In fact, many of these custom scores will use a FICO score as an input so it?s still important to have good FICO scores.

The Good News

The good news is that you only have three credit reports that can be used to calculate a traditional FICO score and a VantageScore credit score. Three credit reports is a whole lot easier to manage than countless credit scores. And, having good credit reports transcends all credit risk scores.?That means if you?ve got good credit you?re going to have good credit scores regardless of the scoring system. Unfortunately, having poor credit reports is going to lead to poor credit scores, again, regardless of the scoring system.

Your credit scores are going to be generated from the same data you can see by going to annualcreditreport.com and claiming your free credit reports.? They?ll be completely influenced by the presence or lack of derogatory information, your debt burden, inquiries, the age of your credit reports, and the mix of credit information.?And while it sounds overwhelming, it really isn?t.?All you have to do is pay all of your bills on time, keep the balances on your credit cards to less than 10% of their credit limits, and only apply for credit when you actually need it.?The credit scoring models will take care of the rest and will reward you, heavily, for doing the right things.? ?

We awoke the next morning to bright sunshine streaming through the bedroom window. After a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and salmon it was time to explore Carlow Town. The town has witnessed huge Government investment and regeneration in the past 15 years but has thankfully managed to retain a nice mix of traditional and new shop fronts and businesses.

We parked down by the redeveloped Waterfront area along the Barrow as a young man and his daughter were feeding swans. It was Saturday morning and the local Farmers Market was abuzz with shoppers and stall owners selling everything from homemade quiches, cakes, apple-tarts, jams, fresh fruit and vegetables. The local people seemed relaxed and happy to chat with visitors.

Our next stop was a visit to Carlow?s Cultural Quarter which includes a brand new 3 Million Euro county museum and 23 Million Euro Visual Arts Centre. The museum covers three floors and has a fascinating collection of exhibitions from traditional rural life in bygone years to Carlow?s once famous Sugar Factory.

Metals versus microbes: The biocidal effect of metalloacid-coated surfaces

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2012) ? A new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control reports of a phenomenon that could help control the spread of hospital-acquired infections: a surface-coating of metalloacids kills off microbial strains, even in multidrug-resistant microorganisms.

Hospital infections are a major public health concern, causing an estimated 99,000 deaths a year in the USA alone. Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces greatly helps reduce these infections. In addition, previous studies have indicated that metalloacids could limit the ability of microorganisms to survive by producing oxonium ions (H₃O+), which creates an acidic pH.

In this novel study, the authors from the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Tours and the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Besan?on, France, set out to test the biocidal ability of molybdenum trioxide metalloacid-coated surfaces. To do this, they contaminated metalloacid-coated and non-coated surfaces by exposing them to microbial suspensions of eleven different microorganisms responsible for hospital infections.

The microorganisms tested were two Staphylococcus aureus strains, Clostridium difficile, three extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae strains, vancomycin-resistant vanA Enterococcus faecium, Psuedomonas aeruginosa, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumanii, and two fungal strains of Candida albicans and Aspergillus fumigatus.

The authors found that the metalloacid-coated surfaces exhibited significant antimicrobial activity in all non-spore-forming organisms tested within 2-6 hours of initial contact. The coated surfaces greatly limited the survival of microorganisms, whereas microorganism numbers remained substantial on non-coated surfaces. Interestingly, spore-forming organisms were completely unaffected by the coated surfaces.

The biocidal reaction is thought to be caused by the diffusion H₃O+ ions through microbial cell membranes, resulting in altered enzyme transport systems and inhibited metabolic activity.

Lead author Nathalie van der Mee-Marquet thinks that the findings of this study could greatly aid hospitals in controlling infection. She said, "In contrast to disinfectants and antibiotics, microbial resistance to metalloacids may not emerge, and they should be safe for human use. A molybdenum trioxide coating may be an effective and permanent means of minimizing microbial contamination between hospital cleaning procedures, particularly against multidrug-resistant organisms."

van der Mee-Marquet suggests that further studies should evaluate the benefits of the coating on medical devices and gauge whether it can be used as a complementary measure in hospitals for preventing the spread of nosocomial infections.

LONDON (AP) -- Manchester United's debt dropped by 18 percent as the Premier League leaders floated on the New York Stock Exchange and sponsorship revenue rose, according to the club's latest financial results.

United's debt, a source of fan opposition toward the owners since the Glazer family took over on 2005, dropped to 359.7 million pounds ($570 million) by Sept. 30 from 436.9 million ($639 million) on June 30.

With the proceeds of its floatation, United paid off 62.6 million pounds ($100 million) of high-interest bonds.

The 134-year-old club's New York listing left the Glazer family, which also owns the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers?, still with the biggest stake in United with almost total voting control. United shares were trading at $12.98 on Wednesday after opening at a discounted price of $14 in August.

The first quarter results released Wednesday also showed that United recorded a profit of 20.5 million pounds ($33 million) compared with a loss of 5 million pounds ($8 million) a year earlier.

Commercial revenue is on course to reach at least 350 million pounds ($555 million) in the financial year after it grew by 24 percent to 43 million pounds ($68 million) in the first quarter.

Ten new sponsorship deals were struck in three months, including with General Motors. Chevrolet will appear on United's shirts for seven years from the 2014-15 season under a $559 million agreement.

"Manchester United had a record first quarter driven by our commercial operation, which continues to experience extremely strong global revenue growth in new media and mobile, retail merchandising and sponsorship,'' United vice chairman Ed Woodward said in a statement. "The team has also made a strong start to the 12-13 season.''

After failing to win trophy last season, United leads the Premier League and its Champions League group, in part due to strengthening the squad.

Between July and September, United spent 29.5 million pounds ($47 million) on players, including midfielders Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell, and the first of two payments to Arsenal for striker Robin van Persie.

Match day revenue did rise by 2 million pounds ($3 million) to 19.6 million pounds ($31 million) in part due to payments for staging football matches at Old Trafford during the London Olympics.
