Mexico: Video threatens to disclose Zetas allies

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) ? An Internet video is threatening Mexico's Zetas drug cartel with exposure of its allies in the local police and news media this week unless the gang frees a kidnapped member of the international hacker movement known as "Anonymous."

The YouTube message, which claims to be from Anonymous "Veracruz, Mexico and the world," says it is "tired of the criminal group the Zetas, which is dedicated to kidnapping, stealing and extortion," and threatens to fight back with information instead of weapons.

It said it knows of police officers, journalists, taxi drivers and others working with the Zetas.

The video refers to an unidentified person kidnapped in the coastal city of Veracruz, and says: "You have made a great mistake by taking one of us. Free him."

The hacker group, which has claimed responsibility for attacks on corporate and government websites worldwide, supposedly will act Friday if the kidnapped activist is not freed or is harmed, according to the message.

"We cannot defend ourselves with weapons, but we can with their cars, houses, bars," the message adds, apparently alluding to properties owned by cartel supporters. "It's not difficult. We know who they are and where they are are."

"Information is free," it says. "We do not forgive. We do not forget."

An official with the Veracruz state attorney general's office, who could not be named because he was not authorized to speak on the record, said the office could not confirm video's authenticity or the case of the kidnapping.

Veracruz, an oil state on the Gulf of Mexico with a major port of the same name, has seen a spike in drug violence in recent months in what authorities say is a battle between the Zetas drug cartel, which has controlled the territory for at least a year, and its rivals. Dozens of bodies have been showing up in recent weeks, including the dumping of 35 last month on a main highway in rush-hour traffic in the city of Boca del Rio.

Two other Internet postings since July have announced the arrival of group that calls itself the "Mata Zetas," or Zeta Killers, who authorities say are likely aligned with the powerful Sinaloa Cartel. Others have raised questions about whether the group's members are vigilantes or other rogue bands taking justice into their own hands against the Zetas.

The new message, presented by someone wearing a theater mask that is a trademark of Anonymous, was reportedly uploaded to websites early this month, but was first reported Friday on the website of the global intelligence think tank Stratfor.

Stratfor, in its analysis of the video, said anyone exposed by Anonymous as a Zetas collaborator ? accurately or not ? would be targeted by rival gangs, and the Zetas could respond by attacking Internet activists even if they are not affiliated with Anonymous.

Three people have been killed recently in the northern states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas by suspected Zetas who apparently believed the victims used the Internet to spread information about the gang.

Egypt Mubarak's trial to be postponed again - lawyers (Reuters)

Cairo (Reuters) ? The trial of Egypt's ousted President Hosni Mubarak, which was due to resume on Sunday, will be postponed until a decision is made on whether to change the panel presiding over the case, said lawyers on Saturday.

Some of the lawyers representing families of those killed in an uprising against Mubarak's rule have demanded changes to the panel after complaining it had failed to give them adequate time to question Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who heads the army council now ruling Egypt.

Lawyers told Reuters the current panel headed by Judge Ahmed Refaat will either hold a session to adjourn the trial while remanding the defendants in prison or will postpone it through administrative methods without holding the session.

"The case is suspended until a decision is reached on Refaat," said Hassan Abul Enen, a lawyer representing the families.

The delay will add to public frustration over the pace of the trial.

Al-Shorouk newspaper reported on Saturday the three judges appointed to decide on the lawyers' request to change the panel in the Mubarak trial had resigned.

The head of the cassation court now has to appoint a new team of judges who will rule on the lawyers' demand, a move likely to further delay the trial of the former president.

The panel had previously postponed hearing the demand until December, saying it needed to review Refaat's record and background, specifically requesting details of any consultancy positions he was involved in.

Judicial sources told Reuters on Saturday the Supreme Judiciary Council, the highest judicial authority in Egypt, said in a report that Refaat has not been appointed in any governmental positions since 1998.

Egyptian judges are often used by government ministries or bodies, a practice critics say has often brought the objectivity of some judges into doubt.

Refaat has a reputation of working by the book and following procedures. He has been praised for his independence by the media.

Seven billion people are not the issue: Human development is what counts

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2011) ? As the global media speculate on the number of people likely to inhabit the planet on October 31 an international team of population and development experts argue that it is not simply the number of people that matters but more so their distribution by age, education, health status and location that is most relevant to local and global sustainability.

Any realistic attempt to achieve sustainable development must focus primarily on the human wellbeing and be founded on an understanding of the inherent differences in people in terms of their differential impact on the environment and their vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities are often closely associated with age, gender, lack of education, and poverty.

These are some of the messages formulated by twenty of the world's leading experts in population, development and environment who met at IIASA in Austria in September 2011, with the objective of defining the critical elements of the interactions between the human population and sustainable development. The Laxenburg Declaration on Population and Development as prepared by the Expert Panel, describes the following five actions as necessary to address sustainable development, achieve a 'green economy' and adapt to environmental change:

  • Recognize that the numbers, characteristics, and behaviors of people are at the heart of sustainable development challenges and of their solutions.
  • Identify subpopulations that contribute most to environmental degradation and those that are most vulnerable to its consequences. In poor countries especially, these subpopulations are readily identifiable according to age, gender, level of education, place of residence, and standard of living.
  • Devise sustainable development policies to treat these subpopulations differently and appropriately, according to their demographic and behavioral characteristics.
  • Facilitate the inevitable trend of increasing urbanization in ways that ensure that environmental hazards and vulnerabilities are under control.
  • Invest in human capital -- people's education and health, including reproductive health -- to slow population growth, accelerate the transition to green technologies, and improve people's adaptive capacity to environmental change.

According to the Panel, "Education increases people's life opportunities in general, greatly contributes to technological and social innovation, and creates the mental flexibility required for a rapid transition to a green economy. This applies to both low- and high-income countries. Hence, the enhancement of human capital from early childhood to old age through formal and informal education and life-long learning is now known to be a decisive policy priority."

Joint convener of the Expert Panel, Professor Wolfgang Lutz from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, IIASA, and the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital, states that the Panel's findings reaffirm research from several key demographic research teams around the world. "Female education and reproductive health services are the two factors that will bring down unsustainable population growth. There is also increasing evidence that 'human capital', the education and health of people, is one of the most important factors in the capacity of people to contribute to sustainable development and economic growth, and adapt to environmental change. These issues are becoming ever more profound, as the population grows and we start to see the consequences of climate change."

Rather than seeing the increase in the number of people sharing the planet merely as a 'problem' Lutz and the other members of the global panel believe that with the right policies and targeted investments in people, particularly the most vulnerable sectors or subpopulations, people will be seen as a resource and not simply a 'problem'.

As stated in the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, "Human beings are at the centre of concern for sustainable development." Therefore, consideration of the changing numbers, characteristics, and distributions of human beings on the planet must be at the core of any serious analysis of the challenges and opportunities for sustainable development.

Qantas ordered to halt dispute after fleet grounded (Reuters)

MELBOURNE/SYDNEY (Reuters) ? An Australian labor tribunal ordered Qantas Airways and its unions to immediately terminate all industrial action and return to the negotiating table to resolve a dispute after the airline grounded its entire global fleet.

Fair Work Australia, an independent industrial umpire, was appointed by the government Saturday after Qantas took the unprecedented step of grounding 108 aircraft, causing the cancellation of almost 500 flights and affecting nearly 70,000 passengers by Sunday afternoon.

Qantas took the drastic action to bring to a head a prolonged, bitter battle with its unions over pay and working conditions and a strategy to set up two new airlines in Asia.

The national carrier, which made a pre-tax profit of $552 million in the year to June 30, plans to cut 1,000 jobs and order $9 billion worth of new aircraft as part of a makeover to salvage its loss-making international business.

The tribunal said Qantas and the unions now have 21 days to negotiate a settlement before binding arbitration may be imposed. Qantas had wanted industrial action terminated, while unions had sought a temporary suspension.

"We are pleased that after 24 hours of turmoil that common sense will be restored to the aviation and tourism sectors of Australia," Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten said in televised remarks.

Union representatives said they would work with Qantas to resume flights as soon as possible.

The grounding had angered stranded passengers and the government, overshadowing Prime Minister Julia Gillard's hosting of a summit of Commonwealth leaders in the western city of Perth.

Earlier, Gillard told reporters she had convened the crisis hearing because of concerns about damage to the economy and had called on the airline and union to quickly end the industrial action.

Almost 20 leaders had been booked to fly out with Qantas, but Gillard said most had made alternate flight plans.

BOLD, UNBELIEVABLE DECISION

Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce estimated the "bold decision, an unbelievable decision" to ground the fleet would cost the company A$20 million ($21.4 million) a day.

The airline said it would be at least midday Monday before flights resumed. It would issue an update later on Monday.

"We will be getting our aircraft back up in the air as soon as we possibly can," Joyce said in a statement after the ruling.

"It could be as early as Monday afternoon on a limited schedule with the approval of the regulator," he said.

"I apologize to all Qantas passengers that have been impacted by the industrial action by unions over the past few months and in particular the past few days."

The panel deliberated for more than 12 hours as lawyers for the airline, union and government questioned executives and advisers and made submissions.

Qantas' shares, which have underperformed the wider market, could fall further after the escalation of hostilities with the unions.

"If they are not on a trading halt I would expect them to come under a bit of downward pressure, because it is going to have a financial impact and there has been a lot of talk about damage to the brand," said Cameron Peacock, market analyst at IG Markets.

Bringing the matter to a head, he said, was understandable.

"It's obviously proved unpopular with people stranded around the globe but in the long-run, and (Joyce) is looking beyond the next week, it's probably the right thing to do."

Shares in Qantas have fallen almost 40 percent this year, underperforming an 8 percent fall in the benchmark index.

Qantas said a series of rolling stoppages by unions had cost the airline almost A$70 million since September and driven down bookings, threatening its survival.

The Qantas dispute is the latest in a tide of industrial unrest as unions press for a greater share of profits amid tight labor markets and a boom in resource prices.

It had threatened to become the most significant disruption to Australian aviation since a six-month 1989 dispute that had a major impact on tourism and other business sectors. Industrial action by engineers cost Qantas around A$130 million in 2008.

Tony Sheldon of the Transport Workers Union had described Qantas' announcement Saturday to ground its fleet and lock out all employees as cynical and pre-planned. Qantas made the move a day after holding a shareholders' meeting.

"It's a company strategy that shareholders should have been told about, that the Australian community should have been told about, not ambushed in the dead of night," he said.

MASSIVE DISRUPTIONS

Qantas check-in desks across Australia were largely empty Sunday. The airline, which usually flies more than 60,000 people a day, is paying for accommodation and expenses for stranded travelers and putting some on alternative flights.

Australian rival Virgin Australia said earlier it was adding 3,000 seats on its domestic network Monday, in addition to 3,500 seats Sunday.

Virgin Australia's airline partners Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways and Air New Zealand said they were looking at options to increase capacity to and within Australia.

Qantas' decision left many passengers venting their anger after they were stranded in 22 cities around the globe.

"To resolve this at the expense of paying customers on one of the biggest flying days in Australia is quite frankly ... bizarre, unwarranted and unfair to the loyal customers that Australia has," a businessman, who gave his name only as Barry, told Sky TV at Melbourne airport.

This weekend is one of Australia's busiest for travel, with tens of thousands traveling to the hugely popular Melbourne Cup horse race Tuesday, dubbed "the race that stops the nation."

Guatemalans bury 9 killed by guerrillas in 1982 (AP)

GUATEMALA CITY ? Residents of a rural Guatemalan town have finally buried in their own cemetery nine men killed by guerrillas in 1982.

The dead are back home in Patalcal in the state of Huehuetenango. They had been killed and left in a nearby town.

Relatives say the men were slain because they did not support attacks on the military during the Central American country's civil war.

A forensics organization exhumed the bodies in 2005 and stored them until donors gave the impoverished survivors money to pay for the coffins and Friday's burial ceremony.

After the war ended in the 1990s, a United Nations-backed commission attributed only about 3 percent of the more than 200,000 people killed to guerrilla attacks. It blamed the rest on the military.

Marie Osmond released from hospital

Marie Osmond had a scare Wednesday night, and not of the Halloween variety.

The singer was rushed to the hospital following her and brother Donny Osmond's variety show at the Flamingo Las Vegas, her rep confirmed to E! News.

Marie knew something was up when her voice started to give out during the musical revue, in which she and her brother both sing together and trade solos.

But Osmond is going to be OK, right?

Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry provides a long-awaited design jolt, compensates for a lot

Remember that downright futuristic BlackBerry we spied back in September? Say hello, all over again. RIM and Porsche (of all companies) have just taken the official wraps off of the Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry, a frighteningly beautiful new slab that offers up a forged stainless steel frame, hand-wrapped leather back cover, sculpted QWERTY keyboard, and "crystal clear touch display." It'll ship with an exclusive Porsche Design UI and a bespoke Wikitude World Browser augmented reality app experience, not to mention the "premium, exclusive PINs that help easily identify another P'9981 smartphone user." Fancy. As for specs, it's boasting a 1.2GHz processor, HD video recording capabilities, 8GB of onboard memory, Liquid Graphics technology, a microSD expansion slot, an inbuilt NFC module and BlackBerry OS 7. We're told that it'll be available from Porsche Design stores later this year, but mum's the word on the (presumably stratospheric) price. Head past the jump for T-break's hands-on vid.

Update: MobileSyrup reports that the device shown here will sell for "around $2,000," and they'll be (unsurprisingly) limited in quantity.

NYPD officers surrender in corruption probe

(AP) ? New York City officers surrendered Friday to face charges in a police corruption case following an investigation that stemmed from a low-profile wiretap of one officer suspected of having ties to a drug dealer and ballooned into a lengthy probe, union officials and people familiar with the case said.

Sixteen officers and five others will be arraigned in Bronx state Supreme Court. Hundreds of police officers swarmed the court Friday ahead of the hearing to show support for the officers.

Some of the charges allege the officers abused their authority by helping family and friends avoid paying traffic tickets, two people familiar with the case said Thursday. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the allegations hadn't been made public.

Thirteen police officers, two sergeants and one lieutenant are facing charges, and some are officials within the department's largest and most powerful union, the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association.

"This has been laid on the shoulders of police officers, but when the dust settles and we have our day in court, it will be clear that this is part of the NYPD at all levels," union President Patrick Lynch said through a spokesman.

The case evolved from a 2009 internal affairs probe of a Bronx officer in the 40th Precinct, Jose Ramos, suspected of associating with a drug dealer, officials said. While listening to the officer's phone, investigators heard calls from people seeing if he could fix tickets for them, they said.

Ramos and his wife were arrested at their home Thursday night, said his lawyer, John Sandleitner. His client ? who has worked for the department nearly 18 years ? had been working up until the night he was arrested.

"If he had done any of these things that they say, they would've arrested him two months ago. Or two years ago," he said. "Why did they let him go to work, then?"

Sandleitner said he is not clear exactly what charges Ramos faces, and he tried in vain several times to arrange for his client to surrender instead of facing arrest.

"Bring the charges on. None of this slipping it out and releasing to the press," he said.

The other officers were allowed to surrender starting at about midnight Thursday. The conversation overheard on the Ramos wiretap led to more wiretaps that produced evidence of additional officers having similar conversations. An unrelated drunken driving case in the Bronx provided a window into the secret probe when prosecutors were forced to disclose to the defense that the arresting officer was among those recorded talking about ticket fixing.

According to a transcript of the tape, a union delegate tells an officer, "I'll get this taken care of" by having a ticket issued to a girlfriend of the officer's cousin pulled the next day.

The case doesn't appear to rise to the level of the more notorious corruption scandals in the nation's largest police department. But in terms of the number of officers facing criminal or internal administrative charges, the probe represents the largest crackdown on police accused of misconduct in recent memory.

Earlier this week, federal prosecutors in Manhattan brought conspiracy and other charges against five current and three former officers alleging they were part of a gun-running ring. In two other recent unrelated federal cases, one officer was charged with arresting a black man without cause and using a racial slur to describe the suspect, and another with using a law enforcement database to try to trump up charges against an innocent man.

As the ticket-fixing investigation unfolded, union officials complained that the probe unfairly singled out officers for an unofficial practice ? undoing paperwork on traffic citations before they reach court ? that has been tolerated for years.

"This issue could have and should have been addressed differently," Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, has said. The union has more than 22,000 members.

Aside from those officers charged criminally, dozens more could face internal charges. In one disciplinary case already decided earlier this year, a former union financial secretary in the Bronx admitted administrative misconduct charges and was docked 40 days of vacation and suspended for five days.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has addressed the issue. Last fall, the NYPD ? which has about 35,000 officers ? installed a new computer system that tracks tickets and makes it much more difficult to tamper with the paper trail.

Kelly also recently formed a new unit within internal affairs to look into ticket fixing. Its officers sit in on traffic court testimony and comb through paperwork to ensure none of the methods is being wrongly employed.

The last serious corruption scandal for the NYPD was the so-called "Dirty 30" case from the early 1990s. More than 33 officers from Harlem's 30th Precinct were implicated in the probe, with most pleading guilty to charges including stealing cash from drug dealers, taking bribes, beating suspects and lying under oath to cover their tracks.

President Obama Forgives Student Loans -- How This Affects Parents (ContributorNetwork)

"Forgive Student Loans" is one of Occupy Wall Street's strongest demands. Today, President Barack Obama unveiled a plan to consolidate college student debt totaling around $1 trillion. Repayment will be income-based. What does this mean for parents and students?

Student college costs

Completing the first two years at a community college and transferring to a four-year school reduces costs. But community college costs are escalating. At most four-year schools, tuition is based on state residency. Community college students must also figure in commuter costs. Muskegon Community College in Michigan estimates out-of-county student costs at about $30,000 for 60 credit hours, plus books, supplies and transportation. The average bachelor's degree costs about $60,000 to $100,000.

Federal Pell grants down

President Obama staved off cuts in the federal Pell grant program. The maximum Pell grant amount is $5,500 per year. But the average student gets about $2,300 per year. That's the amount for parents who gross $50,000 per year, with two kids in college, regardless of their grades. Based on that income, parents are expected to contribute $4,000 per year, per college.

Tuition tax deductions capped

Parents can claim most tuition and fees on their federal income taxes. Some items are deductible under the American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning credit. Room and board or transportation for commuter students are not. The credit is capped at $2,500 and $2,000. Even with grants and tax deductions, about 50 percent to 80 percent of college expenses is pay-as-you-go.

Student loans require cosigner

To get student loans, undergraduate students generally apply for Parent PLUS loan, which requires a parent cosigner. Even students who have taken out vehicle loans need someone to guarantee college loans because the debt incurred is generally large. To protect privacy, parents cannot access student financial aid information without the student, but they are expected to pay any defaulted loans they cosign for.

Parents refuse to cosign

Occupy Wall Street says families shouldn't have to drown in debt or declare financial bankruptcy to help their kids get an education. That's what prevents many parents from cosigning for student loans. Experian says parent credit rating is affected by assumed student debt.

Majority opposes canceling student loans

Rasmussen Reports said 66 percent polled oppose the president's plan. They think federal funds should be spent to assist those who have not gone to college. Some parents, like Chris Tulgestke, of Grand Haven, Mich., believe there are better ways. "Student loans should not be forgiven based on income. Payments should be lowered and stretched out based on income, but not forgiven," Tulgestke says. Twenty-one percent favored forgiving the debt. Kay Wittenhauer of Rochester, N.Y., says, "I feel people who received government funds to pay for college have an advantage over those who had to pay for college themselves, so I'm in favor of the government leveling that playing field."

Winfrey looks to the Web to energize her network (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? After 25 years on TV, Oprah Winfrey says she's having the time of her life on the Web.

The 57-year-old mogul is connecting with viewers through her weekly webcasts, and she says it's "the most fun I've had ever."

Winfrey's live webcast discussions about her new show, "Oprah's Lifeclass," have been so popular, they've been added to the lineup on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

"Lifeclass" premiered earlier this month and features Winfrey sharing her favorite interviews and insights from her long-running talk show. On Fridays, she discusses "Lifeclass" lessons during an hour-long webcast with a live audience, and invites viewers to comment or ask questions in person or through Facebook, Twitter and Skype.

Response to the webcasts has been so positive that Winfrey and her team decided to air them on OWN.

"That was my vision of what this network could be," she said in a recent interview. "You're interacting with people, you're on TV, you're saying stuff that you think is meaningful, you're not just wasting people's time, and people are acting and interacting with us at the same time. It's just a fantastic experience."

Interacting with viewers and inspiring them to think about things in new ways was part of her dream for her network, which launched in January. Though it drew low ratings initially, Winfrey said she feels good about OWN's future.

"I'm going to build on the success of the connection to the Web response and to `Lifeclass,'" she said, "so I'm really excited about it."

China touts its legal system as protecting rights (AP)

BEIJING ? Chinese lawmakers are touting the country's legal system as the best way to protect the rights of citizens while refusing to discuss detainments and intimidation of political critics.

A pair of deputy directors of the national legislature's legal affairs committee said China's legal system reflected changes in society. But they refused to address concerns over the illegal harassment and detention of government critics.

They were asked repeatedly at a briefing Thursday about the death last week of a toddler who was struck by two vehicles and left for dead by passers-by. They declined to discuss it in detail.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus confirmed to have 'fortified glass,' not Gorilla Glass

For all the talk of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in recent days, there's still quite a few questions surrounding the flagship Ice Cream Sandwich phone. Last week we learned that the phone's 4.65-inch screen was a standard Super AMOLED display and not a Super AMOLED Plus variation (as seen on the Galaxy S II), and now Corning has confirmed that the device doesn't use its trademark Gorilla Glass as you may have assumed given its high-end status. According to Samsung, however, it does use a type of "fortified glass," but the company isn't getting any more specific than that. We guess we'll have to wait for some stress tests (or clumsy hands) to see just how well it holds up.

U2 honored as 'Greatest Act' in last 25 years

Rock icons U2 have something new to brag about ? winning Q Magazine's Greatest Act of the Last 25 Years award.

The annual music awards by Britain's best-selling music monthly took place Monday in London and the Irish quartet was among the music notables at the ceremony.

The U.K.'s artist of the moment, singer/songwriter Adele, won two awards, for Best Female and Best Track for her song "Rolling in the Deep." She didn't attend, since the event comes just two weeks after she was forced to cancel her U.S. tour due to throat problems.

Coldplay was voted Best Act in the World Today, although lead singer Chris Martin disagreed with the accolade.

Noel Gallagher, one-half of the warring brothers who led the rock band Oasis to chart glory, was named a Q icon. But he said that award did not come close to rivaling his joy when his favorite soccer team, Manchester City, smashed crosstown rival Manchester United 6-1 on Sunday.

"No award can compare to that. That was the best day of my life, bar my children being born," Gallagher said.

Eighteen awards were handed out, including to rapper Tinie Tempah for Best Male Artist and to U.S. internet sensation Lana Del Ray, who was crowned the Next Big Thing.

Brian May and Roger Taylor accepted entry into the Q Hall of Fame on behalf of glam rockers Queen, and Take That's Gary Barlow was honored as Classic Songwriter.

Multimillion selling DJ Norman Cook, aka Fat Boy Slim, was presented with a Q Inspiration award.

A kinder, gentler Eric Cantor? (Politico)

Eric Cantor thinks America has him all wrong.

The Virginia Republican has been portrayed as an insensitive, combative conservative who wants to withhold disaster relief from the storm stricken and protect Wall Street from the ?mobs? who occupy it.

He?s rubbed legions of liberals ? and some conservatives ? the wrong way. Cantor?s negatives are up, and his public appearances have drawn hundreds of protesters. Unions have stepped up activity in his congressional district.

So now Cantor is trying to rehab his public image. The No. 2 House Republican wants to show he?s a serious lawmaker who?s curious about policy and has been unfairly vilified by the left while trying to find common ground with Democrats.

Cantor is allowing CBS News?s ?60 Minutes? cameras into his life, filming his three children and wife to show that he?s not the hard-line ideologue that has become the object of Democratic caricature. He?s invited the ?60 Minutes? cameras to spend Thanksgiving with his family; Leslie Stahl is slated to be the reporter on the piece.

In an effort to humanize him, Cantor?s staff has started an online video series called ?Snapshot of the Leader,? which depicts Cantor?s daily routine in short bits. The first installment had him talking about the ?American dream? and ?trying to promote achievement and success for everyone.? There will be a dozen of these rolled out on Cantor?s website.

The campaign to recast Cantor?s image may also be a tacit acknowledgment of one of his biggest weaknesses: the likability factor. Cantor, 48, has risen to the top of the GOP hierarchy at a fast and furious pace. He?s known for his acute policy acumen, political sensibility and aggressive fundraising. But Democrats ? including President Barack Obama ? have succeeded in building him up as the embodiment of unreasonable GOP opposition.

He?s working on that.

?I just think the whole picture of anybody ? and me, in this circumstance ? is just not out there,? Cantor said in an interview with POLITICO. ?From what the president has decided to do, as well as the [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee], unions [and] advocacy groups on the left [that have been] coming into my district repeatedly, I just think it?s clear that they want to go promote the sort of description of me that I don?t think is necessarily accurate. It?s all about the contentiousness in Washington and sort of painting me with that; it?s just not what I?m about.?

Cantor planned a speech at the University of Pennsylvania to talk about a favorite progressive topic ? income inequality. His speech included hundreds of words about his immigrant grandmother, who came to the United States from Eastern Europe and lived above her late husband?s supermarket in Richmond, Va., after being widowed at age 30.

But the event was canceled when the Service Employees International Union and the Occupy Philadelphia protest movement threatened to fill the 300-person audience. That won?t stop Cantor ? he has upcoming speeches planned at Northwestern University and Rice University. Of the cancellation at Penn, Cantor said there was ?no sense? in giving a speech about ?trying to pull people together? to an audience of ?100 percent professional protesters.? Penn, Cantor said, would not eject anyone from the venue.

Obama likens GOP presidential race to ?Survivor? (The Ticket)

(Susan Walsh/AP)

President Obama continues to insist he's not paying close attention to the Republican presidential race.

In an interview with NBC's "Tonight Show" set to air Tuesday evening, the president likened the GOP contest to the reality show "Survivor" and said he won't watch the debates until the race has narrowed.

"I'm going to wait until everybody is voted off the island," Obama told host Jay Leno, according to excerpts of the interview released by NBC. "Once they narrow it down to one or two, I'll start paying attention."

Still, Obama used his second appearance on the show as a sitting president (and fourth overall) to take aim at the harsh political climate in Washington and to chide Republicans for opposing his policies.

Asked about GOP criticism over his plan to withdraw troops from Iraq, Obama expressed frustration.

"It's shocking they opposed something I proposed," he said, a tinge of sarcasm in his voice. "I think the things that folks across the country are most fed up with whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Independent, is putting party ahead of country or putting the next election ahead of the next generation."

You can watch Obama's comments here, courtesy NBC:

Asked about the death of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, Obama told Leno insisted he didn't like seeing the dictator's violent death but said it sends a "strong message" to other dictators that "people long to be free" and that "universal rights" should be respected.

"This is somebody who for 40 years has terrorized his country and supported terrorism," Obama said. "(Gadhafi) had an opportunity during the Arab Spring to finally let loose of his grip on power and to peacefully transition into democracy. We gave him ample opportunity, and he wouldn't do it."

But the appearance did have lighter moments. At one point, Obama joked he's warned First Lady Michele Obama that the White House could get "egged" unless she hands out Halloween candy this year.

"Halloween is coming up, and she's been giving kids, for the last few years,?fruit and raisins in the bag," Obama said. "I said, the White House is going to get egged if this keeps up. You need to throw some candy in there? Couple of Reese's Pieces or something."

LG DoublePlay likely to see single release for T-Mobile on October 26th

What phone has a second screen and split keyboard and is likely to make its debut on October 26th? Why yes, it's the LG DoublePlay, one of T-Mobile's latest oddballs. Of course, this is just a screenshot that likely indicates a release later this week (with retail outlets receiving units on November 2nd), so we can't say with an absolute certainty -- though this date would coincide perfectly with the beginning of the National Texting Championship. No word yet on its pricing, and its unique form factor and functionality keeps us from taking any wild guesses. Hopefully we'll know in less than 48 hours.

3D Printers To Save Hermit Crabs

But this probably takes the cake.

I have to hope this is just a (lame) attempt at advertising, and not that the dimwits involved in this actually believe that its better for the hermit crabs to ship plastic around the world, manufacture it into the spools the MakerBot uses, then use all that electricity to fabricate a plastic shell, and then tossing *plastic* into the ocean is actually going to help hermit crabs.

You know, hermit crabs -- an animal of which there are billions in the ocean. (I'm sure a few thousand suckers making these will really help the species!)

You know, an animal that will live in ANY scavanged hollow-enough item.

And if said dimwits actually believe they're helping anything, it just goes to show the aversion to reason and science isn't limited to the radical right.

Murray gains 253 yards, Cowboys top Rams 34-7

DeMarco Murray

By JAIME ARON

updated 7:50 p.m. ET Oct. 23, 2011

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Dallas Cowboys finally broke their string of narrow finishes. All it took was giving the ball to rookie DeMarco Murray and letting him run over the Rams' shoddy defense.

In his first extended playing time, Murray ran for a franchise-record 253 yards, including an early 91-yard touchdown that got the Cowboys started toward a 34-7 victory on Sunday.

Murray ? a third-round pick bumped up in the rotation because of an injury to starter Felix Jones ? topped the best single-game performances by NFL rushing king Emmitt Smith and fellow Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett. It's also the ninth highest total in NFL history, and the most rushing yards by anyone in the NFL this season.

Murray's TD was the second-longest in team history, topped only by an NFL-record 99-yarder by Dorsett in January 1983.

As impressive as Murray's performance was, it came against the Rams, who fell to 0-6 and came in with the NFL's worst defense against the run, allowing 163 yards per game. There were so many holes that when Murray went out with an injury, fourth-stringer Phillip Tanner finished that drive with 35 yards on four carries, including a 6-yard TD run.

For the local fans, it was a terrific start to a baseball-football doubleheader between teams from Dallas-Fort Worth and St. Louis. Game 4 of the World Series began just down the street less than an hour after this game ended. Josh Hamilton of the Rangers and Lance Berkman of the Cardinals showed up in uniform as honorary captains for the pregame coin toss.

Dallas (3-3) never trailed on its way to ending a two-game losing streak. This was the first non-nail-biter of the year, too, ending a streak of 11 straight games decided by four points or less. There also was no reason for team owner Jerry Jones to question coach Jason Garrett's play-calling ? except maybe asking why Murray hasn't gotten the ball more this season.

The 91-yard burst came on his first carry, on a drive that saw the Cowboys starting from their 2-yard line after Bryant decided to let a punt land and roll toward the end zone.

Murray went through a giant hole opened in part by new starting left guard Montrae Holland, who was unemployed until signing Tuesday, cut through an attempted ankle tackle, then outran a defensive back. It was a heck of a way to score the first touchdown of his career, and it more than doubled his career rushing total of 71 coming into the game.

In the fourth quarter, Murray might've had a 70-yard TD, but fell down after 43 because of what appeared to be an injury. His form was off and he went down on his own. Still, that was the run that pushed him past Smith's record of 237 set Oct. 31, 1993, at Philadelphia.

He finished with 25 carries and an average of 10.1 yards. Dallas ran for 294 yards overall, which will spike a season average of 84.8 that had been among the league's worst.

The Rams were the perfect foe for the Cowboys to cure all that ailed them. In addition to their trouble stopping the run, they were without quarterback Sam Bradford and were averaging the fewest points in the league even with him.

A.J. Feeley made his first start since 2007 and was 20 of 33 for 196 yards with one interception and one sack. But the offense gained only 4 yards in the third quarter, and had only one two good drives. The first ended in a 6-yard touchdown run by Steven Jackson that got St. Louis within 14-7. The other ended with a fourth-and-goal from the 1 that was stuffed in the final minutes.

Jackson finished with 70 yards, 46 coming on the touchdown drive.

Brandon Lloyd caught six passes for 74 yards in his St. Louis debut. He was acquired from Denver earlier this week.

St. Louis also saw right tackle Jason Smith and backup defensive tackle Darell Scott carted off with head injuries.

Dallas' Tony Romo was 14 of 24 for 166 yards, with two touchdowns. He didn't have to throw much because the running game was doing so well. However, he hit receiver Dez Bryant for four passes and a touchdown in the second half, which was significant because they'd hooked up for only two passes after halftime all season. His other TD throw went to tight end Jason Witten.
