Obama talks drawdown with his top Afghan commander (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The White House says President Barack Obama has met his top Afghanistan commander to discuss options about how the U.S. military could begin withdrawing American troops.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says the president met with Gen. David Petraeus and his national security team on Wednesday, and they discussed a range of options.

Obama has said he will begin pulling out some of the 100,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan next month. The president says the initial withdrawal will be significant. But others in the administration, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates, have called for a modest withdrawal.

The U.S. and NATO allies want to give Afghans control of their own security by the end of 2014.
